Abstract

A method of operating an inkjet printing system includes turning a heater voltage power source providing drop generation power to an inkjet printhead on or off under direction of a controller; providing a fire control pulse for setting a duration of passage of current from the heater voltage power source through one or more resistive heaters for generation of one or more drops of ink under direction of the controller; inputting the fire control pulse into a protective circuit; and overriding the fire control pulse in the setting of the duration of passage of current from the power source through the one or more resistive heaters if the pulsewidth of the fire control pulse is greater than or equal to a predetermined length of time.

Claims (34)

1 . A method of operating an inkjet printing system comprising:

turning a heater voltage power source providing drop generation power to an inkjet printhead on or off under direction of a controller;

providing a fire control pulse for setting a duration of passage of current from the heater voltage power source through one or more resistive heaters for generation of one or more drops of ink under direction of the controller;

inputting the fire control pulse into a protective circuit; and

overriding the fire control pulse in the setting of the duration of passage of current from the power source through the one or more resistive heaters if the pulsewidth of the fire control pulse is greater than or equal to a predetermined length of time.

2 . The method according to claim 1 , wherein overriding the fire control pulse includes outputting a fire signal control pulse from the protective circuit, wherein a pulsewidth of the fire signal control pulse is equal to or substantially equal to the pulsewidth of the fire control pulse if the pulsewidth of the fire control pulse is less than the predetermined length of time, and wherein the pulsewidth of the fire signal control pulse is less than or equal to the predetermined length of time if the pulsewidth of the fire control pulse is greater than or equal to the predetermined length of time.

3 . The method according to claim 2 , wherein the pulsewidth of the fire signal control pulse is zero if the pulsewidth of the fire control pulse is greater than or equal to the predetermined length of time.

4 . The method according to claim 2 , wherein the pulsewidth of the fire signal control pulse is equal to or substantially equal to the predetermined length of time if the pulsewidth of the fire control pulse is greater than or equal to the predetermined length of time.

5 . The method according to claim 2 , wherein outputting the fire signal control pulse further comprises:

inputting the fire control pulse into a first logic gate of the protective circuit; and

sending an output signal of the first logic gate into a timer circuit in the protective circuit.

6 . The method according to claim 5 further comprising charging a capacitor in the timer circuit.

7 . The method according to claim 5 , wherein inputting the fire control pulse into the first logic gate includes:

inputting the fire control pulse into a first input of a NAND gate; and

inputting a heater voltage status signal into a second input of the NAND gate, wherein the heater voltage status signal has a first voltage if the heater voltage power source is turned on and a second voltage if the heater voltage power source is turned off.

8 . The method according to claim 7 , wherein outputting the fire signal control pulse further comprises using an output of the timer circuit to generate a trigger pulse if the pulsewidth of the fire control input pulse is greater than or equal to the predetermined length of time while the heater voltage power source is on.

9 . The method according to claim 8 , wherein outputting the fire signal control pulse further comprises inputting the trigger pulse into a set input of a latch in the protective circuit.

10 . The method according to claim 9 , wherein outputting the fire signal control pulse further comprises inputting a reset signal into a reset input of the latch, wherein the reset signal has a first level if the heater voltage power source is turned on and a second level if the heater voltage power source is turned off.

11 . The method according to claim 10 , wherein outputting the fire signal control pulse further comprises:

inputting an inverted latch output signal into a first input of the second logic gate; and

inputting the fire control pulse into a second input of a second logic gate.

12 . The method according to claim 11 , wherein an output of the logic gate is the fire signal control pulse.

13 . The method according to claim 2 , wherein outputting the fire signal control pulse includes:

inverting the fire control pulse; and

sending the inverted fire control pulse to a timer circuit.

14 . The method according to claim 13 , wherein outputting the fire signal control pulse further comprises inverting an output of the timer circuit.

15 . The method according to claim 14 , wherein outputting the fire signal control pulse further comprises:

inputting the fire control pulse into a first input of a logic gate; and

inputting the inverted output of the timer circuit into a second input of the logic gate, wherein an output of the logic gate is the fire signal control pulse.

16 . The method according to claim 1 further comprising providing a signal to an output pad of the inkjet printhead if the pulsewidth of the fire control pulse is greater than or equal to the predetermined length of time.

17 . The method according to claim 1 , wherein providing the fire control pulse further comprises sending the fire control pulse to the printhead from an external electrical pulse source.

18 . The method according to claim 1 , wherein providing the fire control pulse further comprises:

generating the fire control pulse internally within the printhead; and

setting a pulsewidth of the fire control pulse by counting clock pulses.
