Abstract

A surgical access device including a frame, first and second supports, and first and second retractor blades releasably coupled with the first and second supports, respectively. The frame has first and second arms. The first support is releasably coupled with the first and second arms. The second support is slidably mounted on the first and second arms. The second support is movable between a first position with the retractor blades in close cooperative position and a spaced apart position with respect to the first support. The first and second retractor blades each have a distal end portion configured and adapted to engage a vertebral body. In one method of use, the retractor is inserted through an incision in first orientation with the blades in close approximation and rotated approximately 90°, before spreading the retractor blades to retract tissue.

Claims (22)

1. A surgical access device comprising:

a frame having first and second arms;

a first support coupled with the first and second arms;

a second support slidably mounted on the first and second arms, the second support movable between a first position adjacent the first support and a second position spaced apart from the first support, one of the first or second supports defining a cavity and including a locking slider; and

first and second retractor blades releasably coupled to the first and second supports, one of the first or second retractor blades including a protruding portion configured to be received in the cavity, the protruding portion defining a groove configured to receive the locking slider when the protruding portion is disposed in the cavity to secure the one of the first or second retractor blades with the one of the first or second supports, wherein each of the first and second retractor blades has a distal end portion configured and adapted to engage a vertebral body.

2. The surgical access device according to claim 1 , wherein the distal end portion of the respective first and second retractor blades defines a recess configured and adapted to engage the vertebral body.

3. The surgical access device according to claim 2 , wherein the recesses defined in the respective distal end portions of the first and second retractor blades includes an arcuate portion having a radius of curvature substantially identical to a radius of curvature of the vertebral body.

4. The surgical access device according to claim 3 , wherein the radius of curvature is in the range of about 0.1 inch to about 1.0 inch.

5. The surgical access device according to claim 4 , wherein the radius of curvature is about 0.6 inch.

6. The surgical access device according to claim 1 , wherein each of the first and second retractor blades defines a longitudinal groove, whereby when the first and second retractor blades are in a close cooperative position the grooves define a lumen.

7. The surgical access device according to claim 6 , wherein the longitudinal groove is configured and dimensioned to receive a fixation pin therethrough.

8. The surgical access device according to claim 1 , wherein each of the first and second arms defines a longitudinal cavity along a length of the first and second arms.

9. The surgical access device according to claim 1 , wherein the second support includes a translation knob configured to move the second support to a particular position along the first and second arms.

10. The surgical access device according to claim 9 , wherein the second support includes a ratchet assembly configured and adapted to provide a uni-directional movement of the second support along the first and second arms.

11. The surgical access device according to claim 1 , further comprising an auxiliary blade transversely mounted on one of the first or second arms.

12. The surgical access device according to claim 11 , further comprising a locking wheel configured and adapted to secure the auxiliary blade to a particular position along the one of the first or second arms.

13. The surgical access device according to claim 12 , wherein the auxiliary blade is transversely adjustable relative to the one of the first and second arms.

The surgical access device according to claim 1 , wherein the one of the first or second retractor blades further includes an engaging portion and a blade portion extending from the engaging portion, the engaging portion configured and adapted to engage an underside of the one of the first or second supports.

15. The surgical access device according to claim 1 , wherein the first support is releasably coupled with the first and second arms.

16. The surgical access device according to claim 14 , wherein the engaging portion and the blade portion are substantially orthogonal to each other.

The surgical access device according to claim 1 , wherein the locking slider is transitionable between an engaged position in which the locking slider is received within the groove of the protruding portion and a disengaged position in which the locking slider is disengaged from the groove of the protruding portion.

18. The surgical access device according to claim 17 , wherein the locking slider is operatively coupled to a biasing member, such that the locking slider is biased towards the engaged position.
