Abstract

A system for determining viewership of articles or ads in printed publications and using the determined viewership to determine author compensation, ad rates, or other historical or demographic related information is described. The system receives text capture information of portions of a number of rendered documents that is generated by capture devices operated by a number of users. The system searches digital content using the received capture information and determines a readership value for components of the rendered document based upon the search.

Claims (49)

1 - 45 . (canceled)

46 . A method comprising:

receiving, at a server device, information captured from a rendered document;

identifying, using the server device based on the captured information, digital content associated with the rendered document; and

determining, using the server device, a readership value for a component of the digital content.

47 . The method of claim 46 , further comprising:

obtaining, using the server device based on the captured information, a search result from an index regarding content of digital copies of rendered documents; and

adjusting a relevance or priority of the search result obtained from the index based on the captured information.

48 . The method of claim 46 , further comprising:

determining, using the server device, a number of captures for the component of the digital content,

wherein determining the readership value is based on, at least in part, the number of captures.

49 . The method of claim 48 , wherein the number of captures is an estimate for actual readership of the component of the digital content.

50 . The method of claim 48 ,

wherein the digital content associated with the rendered document comprises an article or advertisement, the method further comprising:

aggregating identification information regarding the article or advertisement with other identification information regarding the article or advertisement to determine how many times or how often the article is captured.

51 . The method of claim 48 , further comprising:

receiving, at the server device, an annotation associated with the information captured from the rendered document,

wherein determining the readership value is further based on the annotation associated with the information captured from the rendered document.

52 . The method of claim 48 , wherein the readership value is further based on a link to a document location.

53 . The method of claim 46 , wherein the readership value is based on, at least in part, a user value metric associated with a user that captured the information from the rendered document.

54 . The method of claim 53 , wherein the user value metric is based on, at least in part, a number of captures performed by the reader, a popularity of annotations created by the reader, a degree to which the reader is referenced, a degree to which the reader is followed, or a degree to which the reader is endorsed.

55 . The method of claim 53 , further comprising:

reporting, using the server device, the readership value to an advertiser;

providing to the advertiser, using the server, a bill based on, at least in part, the readership value.

56 . The method of claim 46 , further comprising:

selecting, using the server device, out-of-band advertising based on the information captured from the rendered document; and

providing, using the server device, the selected out-of-band advertising for presentation to a user that captured the information from the rendered document.

57 . The method of claim 46 , further comprising:

determining, using the server device, a compensation for an author of content within the rendered document,

wherein the compensation is based on the readership value.

58 . The method of claim 46 , wherein the captured information comprises information scanned from the rendered document using a scanning device.

59 . The method of claim 46 , wherein the captured information comprises information captured by an audio recorder.

60 . The method of claim 46 , wherein the information captured from the rendered document comprises a signature that uniquely or substantially identifies the digital content associated with the rendered document.

61 . The method of claim 46 ,

wherein the rendered document comprises an article comprising text and an advertisement, and

wherein the component of the digital content comprises the advertisement.

62 . The method of claim 46 , wherein the readership value is based on, at least in part, a capture frequency.

63 . The method of claim 46 , further comprising:

registering, using the server device, a publisher that supplies the digital content associated with the rendered document, and

accessing, using the server device, the digital content associated with the rendered document from a data storage device associated with the publisher.

64 . A non-transitory computer readable medium comprising computer instructions executable by a logic device of a server device to cause performance of the following operations:

receiving, at a server device, information captured from a rendered document;

identifying, using the server device based on the captured information, digital content associated with the rendered document; and

determining, using the server device, a readership value for a component of the digital content.

65 . A server device comprising:

a network interface configured to receive information captured from a rendered document;

a logic device; and

a data storage device comprising computer-readable instructions,

wherein the computer-readable instructions are executable by the logic device to identify, based on the captured information, digital content associated with the rendered document, and determine a readership value for a component of the digital content.
