Abstract

Apparatuses and methods for moving playing cards from a first group of cards into plural hands of cards, wherein each of the hands contains a random arrangement of cards. The apparatus may comprise a card receiver for receiving the first group of cards, a single stack of card-receiving compartments generally adjacent to the card receiver, the stack generally vertically movable, an elevator for moving the stack, a card-moving mechanism between the card receiver and the stack, and a microprocessor that controls the card-moving mechanism and the elevator so that an individual card is moved into an identified compartment. The number of compartments receiving cards and the number of cards moved to each compartment may be selected. Apparatuses for feeding cards may comprise a surface for supporting a stack of cards, a feed roller with a frictional outer surface, a drive mechanism for causing rotation of the feed roller, a pair of speed-up rollers to advance the cards out of the feed roller, and a clutch mechanism for disengaging the feed roller from the drive mechanism as the card comes into contact with the speed-up rollers.

Claims (44)

1. A method of forming a hand of cards, comprising:

supporting a set of cards in a card receiver;

dividing the set of cards into a randomized group of cards to be used for game play and at least one other group of cards;

transferring the randomized group of cards into a card output tray; and

transferring the at least one other group of cards to the same output tray in response to a signal indicating that the randomized group of cards has been removed from the output tray, each card in the set of cards being transferred to the output tray.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein supporting the set of cards in the card receiver comprises supporting a deck of 52 standard playing cards in the card receiver.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein dividing the set of cards into the randomized group of cards and the at least one other group of cards comprises individually feeding each card of the set of cards from a card infeed tray of the card receiver into an internal storage compartment of a plurality of internal storage compartments.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein dividing the set of cards into the randomized group of cards to be used for game play comprises dividing the set of cards into a player hand, a dealer hand, or a house hand.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein dividing the set of cards into the randomized group of cards comprises dividing the set of cards into a preselected number of randomized hands of cards.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising transferring another randomized group of cards to be used for game play to the output tray in response to a signal indicating an absence of cards in the output tray.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising delivering a plurality of randomized groups of cards to be used for game play until a number of delivered groups of cards is equal to a predetermined maximum number of groups of cards to be used for game play.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising delivering an additional randomized group of cards to be used for game play in response to an input signal requesting the additional randomized group of cards.

9. An apparatus configured to deliver randomly ordered groups of playing cards, comprising:

a card receiver configured to receive and support a set of playing cards;

a temporary card storage area configured to temporarily store cards;

an input card moving mechanism configured to move cards from the card receiver to the temporary card storage area;

a card output tray configured to receive a group of randomized cards to be used for game play from the temporary card storage area, wherein the group of randomized cards used for play is selected from the group consisting of a player hand, a dealer hand, and a house hand;

an output card moving mechanism configured to move the formed group of randomized cards from the temporary card storage area to the card output tray;

a sensor in the card output tray configured to generate a signal indicating the group of randomized cards was removed from the card output tray; and

at least one microprocessor programmed to:

operate the input card moving mechanism and the temporary card storage area to randomize an order of cards of the set of playing cards;

operate the output card moving mechanism and the temporary card storage area to deliver the group of randomized cards to the card output tray;

operate the output card moving mechanism and the temporary card storage area to deliver another randomly arranged formed group of playing cards to the card output tray when a signal indicating that the first group of randomized cards was removed is received at the microprocessor from the sensor; and

operate the output card moving mechanism and the temporary card storage area to transfer all remaining cards of the set of playing cards to the card output tray when a predetermined number of groups of randomized cards has been delivered.

10. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the card receiver comprises a card support surface.

11. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the input card moving mechanism comprises a pick-up roller located in the card receiver.

12. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the input card moving mechanism comprises a pair of speed-up rollers configured to transfer cards delivered by the pick-up roller to the temporary card storage area.

13. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the temporary card storage area comprises a plurality of adjacent compartments, each compartment capable of temporarily storing multiple cards.

14. The apparatus of claim 13 , further comprising an alignment device configured to align the input card moving mechanism with a compartment, wherein the microprocessor is programmed to operate the alignment device to align a compartment selected at random.

The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the temporary card storage area comprises a vertical rack comprising a plurality of compartments configured to temporarily store groups of randomized cards to be used for play and at least one compartment configured to temporarily store cards not used for play.

16. A card shuffler, comprising:

a card receiver configured to receive and support a set of playing cards;

a temporary card storage area comprising compartments configured to temporarily store cards and a compartment-moving mechanism configured to move the compartments of the temporary card storage area;

an input card-moving mechanism configured to move each card of the set of playing cards individually from the card receiver to a randomly selected compartment of the temporary card storage area;

a card output tray configured to receive a group of randomized cards to be used for game play from the temporary card storage area;

an output card-moving mechanism configured to move the group of randomized cards from the compartment of the temporary card storage area in which it was temporarily stored to the card output tray; and

a control unit comprising at least one microprocessor programmed to:

randomly select a compartment of the temporary card storage area in which to insert each successive card of the set of playing cards;

operate the input card-moving mechanism and the compartment-moving mechanism to move each successive card of the set of playing cards into a randomly assigned compartment of the temporary card storage area; and

operate the output card-moving mechanism and the compartment-moving mechanism to deliver a group of randomized cards from each compartment in which each group of randomized cards was temporarily stored to the card output tray.

The card shuffler of claim 16 , wherein the at least one microprocessor of the control unit is programmed to operate the output card-moving mechanism and the compartment-moving mechanism to deliver groups of randomized cards from one compartment in which a group of randomized cards was temporarily stored to the card output tray and from each in a series of adjacent compartments in which groups of randomized cards were temporarily started to the card output tray.

18. The card shuffler of claim 16 , wherein the at least one microprocessor of the control unit is programmed to operate the output card-moving mechanism and the compartment-moving mechanism to unload each group of randomized cards from each compartment in sequence into the card output tray.

The card shuffler of claim 16 , wherein the at least one microprocessor of the control unit is programmed to operate the output card-moving mechanism and the compartment-moving mechanism to deliver any unused remaining groups from each compartment in which each remaining group of randomized cards was temporarily stored.

20. The card shuffler of claim 16 , further comprising a sensor in the card output tray configured to generate a signal indicating the group of randomized cards was removed from the card output tray and wherein the at least one microprocessor of the control unit is programmed to operate the output card-moving mechanism and the compartment-moving mechanism to deliver a next randomly arranged group of playing cards to the card output tray when a signal indicating that the first group of randomized cards was removed is received at the control unit from the sensor.
