Abstract

Techniques are disclosed herein that provide a TV receiver that supports a set of existing iTV standards and proprietary iTV implementations. Further, the TV receiver can be extended to support additional iTV standards and proprietary iTV implementations. A digital television data stream is received and processed by a client. The digital television data stream is analyzed to determine which interactive television format is present. A registry of interactive television virtual machines is searched to determine whether a virtual machine is registered for the interactive television format. Each of the interactive television virtual machines is adapted for one of the interactive television formats. If a virtual machine that matches the interactive television format is found, it is loaded and hosted. Hosting the virtual includes providing services to the virtual machine through common application programming interfaces (APIs) machine includes. The common APIs may be used by any virtual machine that is loaded.

Claims (31)

1. A system comprising:

a processor; and

a computer readable storage device having stored thereon a set of instructions and data structures for implementing a television receiver, the instructions which when executed on the processor implement:

a platform that hosts virtual machines that each implement an interactive television (iTV) format out of a plurality of formats of iTV;

a registration method that receives an iTV detection plug-in from ones of the virtual machines during registration with the platform, the iTV detection plug-in allows detection of one of the plurality of iTV formats in a digital broadcast stream; and

a list of virtual machines that are registered with the platform, each of the virtual machines implement one of the plurality of iTV formats;

wherein the platform receives a digital broadcast stream, the platform analyzes the digital broadcast stream to determine which of the plurality of iTV formats is present in the digital broadcast stream, including the platform using an iTV detection plug-in received by the registration method, the platform searches the list for a virtual machine that matches the iTV format in the digital broadcast stream, the platform loads the virtual machine that matches the iTV format.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the registration method receives a metadata plug-in from ones of the virtual machines that assists in extracting metadata from the digital broadcast stream for the iTV format that corresponds to the virtual machine that provided the metadata plug-in.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the metadata plug-in for a particular virtual machine identifies which data streams in the digital broadcast stream are relevant to the iTV standard associated with the particular virtual machine and are to be forwarded to the particular virtual machine.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the platform provides a plurality of services to the virtual machines through a plurality of common application programming interfaces (APIs).

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the registration method receives information from ones of the virtual machines during a registration process with the platform to allow the respective virtual machines to access the APIs.

6. The system of claim 5 , wherein the information to allow the respective virtual machines to access the APIs includes entry points for the APIs.

7. The system of claim 4 , wherein the plurality of services include a generic tuning interface used by each of the iTV virtual machines.

8. A computer readable storage device having stored thereon a set of instructions and data structures for implementing a television receiver, the instructions which when executed on a processor implement:

a registry that lists a plurality of virtual machines, each of the virtual machines implement a format of interactive television (iTV) out of a plurality of formats of interactive television; and

a platform that hosts the virtual machines, the platform receives a first iTV detection plug-in from a first of the virtual machine during registration with the platform that allows detection of a first of the plurality of interactive television formats, the platform receives a digital broadcast stream, the platform analyzes the digital broadcast stream to determine which of the plurality of interactive television formats is present in the digital broadcast stream, including using the first plug-in, the platform searches the registry for a virtual machine that matches the interactive television format, the platform loads and hosts the virtual machine that matches the interactive television format.

9. The computer readable storage device of claim 8 , wherein the platform provides a plurality of application program interfaces (APIs), the APIs allow the virtual machines to have access to a plurality of services provided by the platform.

10. The computer readable storage device of claim 9 , wherein the platform has a registration method that receives information from ones of the virtual machines during a registration process with the platform to allow the respective virtual machines to access the APIs.

11. The computer readable storage device of claim 10 , wherein the information to allow the respective virtual machines to access the APIs includes entry points for the APIs.

12. The computer readable storage device of claim 11 , wherein a first of the entry points defines managed assembly of an iTV virtual machine that supports interfaces needed for the platform to load the iTV virtual machine and provide the iTV virtual machine with a root interface of the platform.

13. The computer readable storage device of claim 10 , wherein the registration method allows a given virtual machine to provide a metadata plug-in that is used by the platform to extract metadata from the digital broadcast stream for the iTV format that corresponds to the given virtual machine.

14. The computer readable storage device of claim 8 , wherein the plurality of formats of iTV include one a more published standards and one or more proprietary protocols.

15. A method for providing a television receiver, comprising:

providing an interactive television (iTV) platform that hosts virtual machines that each implement an (iTV) format out of a plurality of formats of iTV; and

providing a registration method that receives an iTV detection plug-in from ones of the virtual machines during registration with the platform, the iTV detection plug-in allows detection of one of the plurality of iTV formats in a digital broadcast stream, the registration method stores a list of virtual machines that are registered with the platform, each of the virtual machines implement one of the plurality of iTV formats;

the platform receives a digital broadcast stream, the platform analyzes the digital broadcast stream to determine which of the plurality of iTV formats is present in the digital broadcast stream, including the platform using an iTV detection plug-in received by the registration method, the platform searches the list for a virtual machine that matches the iTV format in the digital broadcast stream, the platform loads the virtual machine that matches the iTV format.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the registration method receives a metadata mapping plug-in from ones of the virtual machines that assists in extracting metadata from the digital broadcast stream for the iTV format that corresponds to the virtual machine that provided the metadata mapping plug-in.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein the metadata mapping plug-in for a particular virtual machine identifies which data streams in the digital broadcast stream are relevant to the iTV standard associated with the particular virtual machine and are to be forwarded to the particular virtual machine.

18. The method of claim 15 , wherein the iTV platform provides a plurality of services to the virtual machines through a plurality of common application programming interfaces (APIs).

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein the registration method receives information from ones of the virtual machines during a registration process with the iTV platform to allow the respective virtual machines to access the APIs.

20. The method of claim 19 , wherein the information to allow the respective virtual machines to access the APIs includes entry points for the APIs.
