Abstract

An asset's TCU, or a mobile device coupled thereto, receives and stores geographical boundary definitions to a memory. A processor uses the boundary definition to determine an initial-location boundary based on the definition and the current location of the TCU at the time it received the boundary request message. As the TCU's GPS unit generates location information, the processor retrieves the initial-location boundary definition from the memory and compares the current location from the GPS receiver to it according to an algorithm. If the processor determines that the current location of the vehicle has crossed the boundary, the processor generates an alert message, which may be an e-mail, SMS, telephonic, internet, IM, or other electronic message indicating that an asset crossed the boundary, and sends it wirelessly using a transceiver to a central computer for further processing, or directly to another device, according to a notification destination identifier.

Claims (23)

1. A system, comprising:

a telematics device located in a vehicle;

a tracking application associated with the vehicle, wherein the tracking application defines a geofence;

one or more wireless mobile devices associated with the telematics device; and

wherein the tracking application is configured: to generate an alert message when the telematics device crosses the geofence if one of the one or more wireless mobile devices is not in the presence of the telematics device, and to suppress generating an alert message when the telematics device crosses the geofence if one of the one or more wireless mobile devices is in the presence of the telematics device.

2. The system of claim 1 wherein the tracking application is running on the telematics device.

3. The system of claim 1 wherein the tracking application is running on a server remote from the vehicle.

4. The system of claim 1 wherein the tracking application is running on one of the one or more wireless devices associated with the telematics device.

5. The system of claim 2 wherein the tracking application generates the boundary in response to a wirelessly received boundary request message.

6. A tracking application running on a first device configured to perform a method, the steps of the method comprising:

associating the first device with a vehicle;

wherein the first device is in the vehicle;

defining a geofence associated with the vehicle;

associating one or more wireless mobile devices with the first device;

generating an alert message when the first device crosses the geofence if one of the one or more wireless mobile devices is not in the presence of the first device; and

suppressing the generation of an alert message when the first device crosses the geofence if one of the one or more wireless mobile devices is in the presence of the first device.

7. The tracking application, of claim 6 wherein the tracking application generates the boundary in response i:o a wirelessly received boundary request message.

8. A server device configured to perform a method, the steps of the method comprising:

associating a telematics device with a vehicle;

defining a geofence associated with the vehicle;

associating one or more wireless mobile devices with the vehicle;

generating an alert message when the telematics device crosses the geofence if one of the one or more wireless mobile devices is not in the presence of the telematics device; and

suppressing the generation of an alert message when the telematics device crosses the geofence if one of the one or more wireless mobile devices is in the presence of the telematics device.
