Abstract

A system for pre-treating biomass for the production of ethanol is provided. The system supplies biomass to a steaming bin, wherein the biomass is mixed with water, and inputting the steamed biomass to a first pretreatment reactor, wherein the steamed biomass comprises liquids and solids. The system removes a bulk of liquids from the solids and feeding the solids into a second pretreatment reactor. The system applies a pressure drop to the solids in the second pretreatment reactor, wherein the pressure drop opens up a structure of the solids, and sending the solids to a fermentation process for ethanol processing.

Claims (31)

1. An apparatus for pre-treating biomass, comprising:

a steaming bin that receives and steams biomass;

a first pressurized pretreatment reactor coupled to the steaming bin to receive the steamed biomass;

a drainer included in or coupled to the first pressurized pretreatment reactor, wherein the drainer includes a passage for the steamed biomass, a screen adjacent the passage, and an outlet on a side of the screen opposite to the passage, wherein the outlet is configured to pass liquids extracted through the screen from the steamed biomass;

a pressurized conduit for the steamed biomass moving from the first pressurized pretreatment reactor, through the drainer and into a second pressurized pretreatment reactor, wherein the steamed biomass remains in the pressurized conduit while moving from the first pressurized pretreatment reactor, through the drainer and into the second pressurized pretreatment reactor;

the second pressurized pretreatment reactor that receives the steamed biomass from the pressurized conduit, is configured to processes the biomass in a pH range of 1.3 to 2.0 pH, and includes a pressure release device at or proximate to a discharge of the second pressurized pretreatment reactor, wherein as the steamed biomass passes through the pressure release device cellulosic structures in the steamed biomass are opened due to the pressure drop, and

a conduit conveying the steamed biomass with opened cellulosic structures from the pressure release device to at least one of a saccharification process or a fermentation process for ethanol processing.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the steaming bin includes a steam inlet and the steaming bin is configured to heat the biomass to at least 100 degrees Celsius.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the drainer includes an inlet to receive water to be introduced into the steamed biomass and a mechanical agitator configured to agitate the steamed biomass moving through the passage.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the drainer includes a liquid inlet and a liquid outlet upstream of the liquid inlet in a direction of flow of the steamed biomass through the passage.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the first pressurized pretreatment reactor includes an inlet to receive an acid to be added to the steamed biomass.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the steaming bin includes a grinder configured to grind the biomass.

7. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the first pressurized pretreatment vessel includes multiple inlets each connected to a source of an acid, wherein the inlets are arranged on the first pressurized pretreatment vessel along a flow passage for the steamed biomass.

8. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the first pressurized pretreatment vessel includes successive inlets and outlets for circulating an acid through the steamed biomass flowing through the first pressurized pretreatment vessel.

9. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the drainer is an inclined screw conveyor including a steamed biomass inlet and the outlet both at a lower end region of the conveyor and a steamed biomass outlet at an upper end region of the conveyor.

10. A system for pre-treating biomass comprising:

a steaming container that receives and steams biomass;

a pressurization device coupled to an outlet configured to receive steamed biomass from the steaming container and having a pressurized outlet for the steamed biomass;

a first pressurized pretreatment reactor coupled to the pressurization device to receive the pressurized steamed biomass, wherein the first pressurized pretreatment reactor includes at least inlet coupled to a source of steam and an acid;

a pressurized screw conveyor coupled to the first pressurized pretreatment reactor including an inlet for the steamed biomass and an outlet for the steamed biomass;

a pressurized conduit for the steamed biomass moving from the first pressurized pretreatment reactor, through the screw conveyor and into a second pressurized pretreatment reactor, wherein the steamed biomass remains in the pressurized conduit while moving from the first pressurized pretreatment reactor, through the conveyor and into the second pressurized pretreatment reactor;

a liquid drain coupled to the pressurized screw conveyor or first pressurized treatment reactor, wherein the liquid drain is configured to remove liquid from the steamed biomass;

the second pressurized pretreatment reactor that receives the steamed biomass from the pressurized conduit, is configured to processes the biomass in a pH range of 1.3 to 2.0 pH, and includes a pressure release device at or proximate to a discharge of the second pressurized pretreatment reactor, wherein as the steamed biomass passes through the pressure release device cellulosic structures in the steamed biomass are opened due to the pressure drop, and

a conduit conveying the steamed biomass with opened cellulosic structures from the pressure release device to at least one of a saccharification process or a fermentation process for ethanol processing.

11. The system of system 10 wherein the steaming container includes a steam inlet and is configured to heat the biomass to at least 100 degrees Celsius.

12. The system of claim 10 wherein the pressurized screw conveyor includes an inlet to receive water to be introduced into the steamed biomass moving through the pressurized passage.

13. The system of claim 10 wherein the pressurized screw conveyor includes a liquid inlet and a liquid outlet upstream of the liquid inlet in a direction of flow of the steamed biomass through the passage.

14. The system of claim 10 wherein the steaming container includes a grinder configured to grind the biomass.

15. The system of claim 10 wherein the first pressurized pretreatment vessel includes multiple inlets each connected to the source of the acid, wherein the inlets are arranged on the first pressurized pretreatment vessel along a flow passage for the steamed biomass.

16. The system of claim 10 wherein the first pressurized pretreatment vessel includes successive inlets and outlets for circulating an acid through the steamed biomass flowing through the first pressurized pretreatment vessel.

17. The system of claim 10 wherein the screw conveyor is inclined and includes the steamed biomass inlet and a liquid drain both at a lower end region of the conveyor and the steamed biomass outlet at an upper end region of the conveyor.
