Abstract

Aqueous ink jet ink compositions are used for ink jet printing colorless, colored or invisible images on receiver elements. These compositions contain a dispersion of an unsaturated natural oil and a water compatible polyurethane. The unsaturated oil dispersion is prepared from conventional surfactants or a polyurethane dispersing agent. The polyurethane is prepared from unsaturated polyol segments prepared from the unsaturated natural oils. The ink preparations are printed on media treated with agents such as metal ions known to catalyze crosslinking reactions in unsaturated oils. Such compositions are useful in various ink jet printing systems including drop on demand and continuous ink jet printing systems.

Claims (23)

1. An aqueous ink jet ink composition comprising:

an aqueous dispersion of unsaturated natural oil, and a water dispersible polyurethane.

2. The aqueous ink jet ink composition of claim 1 , wherein the aqueous dispersion of unsaturated natural oil is present in an amount of at least 0.5 weight % and up to and including 10 weight %.

3. The aqueous ink jet ink composition of claim 1 , wherein the water dispersible polyurethane has an acid number greater than 50 and is present in an amount of at least 0.1 weight % up to and including 10 weight %.

4. The aqueous ink jet ink composition of claim 1 , wherein the water dispersible polyurethane contains an unsaturated polyol segment derived from a natural unsaturated oil.

5. An aqueous ink jet ink composition of claim 1 , wherein the unsaturated natural oil is linseed oil, tung oil, castor oil, soybean oil, safflower oil, sunflower oil, sesame oil, walnut oil, corn oil, cotton seed oil, grape seed oil, pumpkin seed oil, hemp oil.

6. The aqueous ink jet ink composition of claim 1 , further including a colorant.

7. The aqueous ink jet ink composition of claim 6 , wherein the colorant is a visible non-fluorescing colorant.

8. The aqueous ink jet ink composition of claim 6 , wherein the colorant is a visible or invisible fluorescing colorant.

9. The aqueous ink jet ink composition of claim 6 , wherein the colorant is a pigment having a median particle size that is greater than 10 nm and up to and including 500 nm, and the 95 th percentile colorant pigment particle size is less than 250 nm.

10. The aqueous ink jet ink composition of claim 9 , wherein the colorant is a pigment having a median particle size that is greater than 5 nm and up to and including 250 nm.

11. The aqueous ink jet ink composition of claim 6 , further including a dispersing agent for the colorant.

12. The aqueous ink jet ink composition of claim 1 , further including a humectant.

13. A method of ink jet printing, comprising:

providing the aqueous ink jet ink composition of claim 1 ,

delivering the aqueous ink jet ink composition to a drop generator mechanism, and ejecting the aqueous ink jet printer ink composition from the drop generator mechanism, and

controlling the spaced drops to image a receiver element.

14. The method of claim 13 , further including providing the ink jet ink composition from a main fluid supply, and the continuous stream is broken into both spaced drops and non-printing drops that are collected and returned to a main fluid supply.

15. The method of claim 13 , wherein the drop generating mechanism includes one or more print heads.

16. The method of claim 13 , wherein the receiver element has been pretreated with a catalyst compound to accelerate crosslinking reactions.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein the catalyst compound contains one or more of the following metals: cobalt, iron, zirconium, manganese, zinc, calcium, titanium, vanadium, chromium, molybdenum, tin, cadmium, mercury, or lead.

18. The method of claim 13 , further including pretreating the receiver element with a composition to enhance the quality of the ink jet printed image.

19. A method for forming an image, the method comprising ink jet printing a receiver element with the aqueous ink jet ink composition of claim 1 , using an ink jet printer.
