Abstract

A method includes providing device management services to a managed device by defining one or more transaction control primitives and one or more transaction initiation commands for modifying a management tree of a managed device, mapping the transaction control primitives and transaction initiation commands to device management commands for the managed device, transmitting the device management commands to the managed device, determining a relevance of any of the transmitted device management commands that fail to execute, and based on the relevance determination, allowing the managed device to modify the management tree without executing the commands that fail to execute.

Claims (36)

1. An apparatus comprising:

a memory; and

a processor coupled to the memory operable to implement:

a service management manager configured for defining one or more transaction control primitives and one or more transaction initiation commands for modifying a management tree of a managed device;

a device management manager configured for mapping the transaction control primitives and transaction initiation commands to device management commands for the managed device, and for transmitting the device management commands to the managed device;

the service management manager further configured to determine a relevance of any of the transmitted device management commands that fail to execute and, when one of the transmitted device management commands is determined to be of low relevance, allow the managed device to modify the management tree without executing the command that failed to execute and, when the one of the transmitted device management commands is alternatively determined to be of high relevance, cause a return to an initial state prior to a start of execution of the transmitted device management commands.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein based on the relevance determination, the service management manager is further configured to provide a transaction control primitive for returning the managed device to a preceding state.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the service management manager is further configured for defining one or more transaction control primitives and one or more transaction initiation commands to be modeled into the management tree of the managed device.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the device management manager is configured for mapping the transaction control primitives and transaction initiation commands to device management commands according to stored instructions.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the device management manager is configured for mapping the transaction control primitives and transaction initiation commands to device management commands according to program code controlling the processor.

6. A method comprising:

providing device management services, via a processor under program control, to a managed device by defining one or more transaction control primitives and one or more transaction initiation commands for modifying a management tree of the managed device;

mapping the transaction control primitives and transaction initiation commands to device management commands for the managed device, and transmitting the device management commands to the managed device; and

determining a relevance of any of the transmitted device management commands that fail to execute and, when one of the transmitted device management commands is determined to be of low relevance, allowing the managed device to modify the management tree without executing the command that failed to execute and, when the one of the transmitted device management commands is alternatively determined to be of high relevance, causing a return to an initial state prior to a start of execution of the transmitted device management commands.

7. The method of claim 6 , further comprising based on the relevance determination, providing a transaction control primitive for returning the managed device to a preceding state.

8. The method of claim 6 , further comprising defining one or more transaction control primitives and one or more transaction initiation commands that are to be modeled into the management tree of the managed device.

9. The method of claim 6 , further comprising mapping the transaction control primitives and transaction initiation commands to device management commands according to stored instructions.

10. The method of claim 6 , further comprising mapping the transaction control primitives and transaction initiation commands to device management commands according to program code controlling the processor.

11. An apparatus comprising:

a memory; and

a processor coupled to the memory operable to implement:

a device management agent of a managed device configured for mapping one or more received device management commands to transaction control primitives and transaction initiation commands;

a service management agent configured for executing the transaction control primitives and transaction initiation commands for modifying a management tree of the managed device;

the device management agent further configured to transmit an information element identifying any device management commands that fail to execute and, based on a relevance determination when one of the device management commands identified by the information element is of low relevance, allow modification of the management tree without executing the command that failed to execute and, when the one of the device management commands is alternatively of high relevance, cause a return to an initial state prior to a start of execution of the device management commands.

12. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein based on the relevance determination, the device management agent is further configured to receive a device management command mapping to a transaction control primitive for returning the managed device to a preceding state.

The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the device management agent is further configured to receive a device management command mapping to one or more transaction control primitives and one or more transaction initiation commands that are to be modeled into the management tree of the managed device.

14. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the device management agent is configured for mapping the device management commands to transaction control primitives and transaction initiation commands according to stored instructions.

15. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the device management agent is configured for mapping the device management commands to transaction control primitives and transaction initiation commands according to program code controlling the processor.

16. A method comprising:

receiving device management services by a managed device, via a processor under program control, by receiving device management commands for modifying a management tree of the managed device;

mapping the device management commands to transaction control primitives and transaction initiation commands for the managed device; and

transmitting an information element identifying any transaction control primitives and transaction initiation commands that fail to execute and, based on a relevance determination when one of the device management commands identified by the information element is of low relevance, allowing modification of the management tree without executing the command that failed to execute and, when the one of the device management commands is alternatively of high relevance, causing a return to an initial state prior to a start of execution of the device management commands.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein based on the relevance determination, receiving a device management command mapping to a transaction control primitive for returning the managed device to a preceding state.

18. The method of claim 16 , further comprising receiving a device management command mapping to one or more transaction control primitives and one or more transaction initiation commands that are to be modeled into the management tree of the managed device.

19. The method of claim 16 , further comprising mapping the device management commands to transaction control primitives and transaction initiation commands according to stored instructions.

20. The method of claim 16 , further comprising mapping the device management commands to transaction control primitives and transaction initiation commands according to program code controlling the processor.
