Abstract

A ramp may include a frame having first and second end portions and at least one rung extending substantially between the frame and being positioned between the first and second end portions, the at least one rung forming at least a portion of a ramp surface. The ramp may further include a plate extending substantially between the frame and being positioned adjacent to at least one of the first and second end portions, and a lip pivotally attached to the plate at a pivot axis, wherein the pivot axis is non-load bearing.

Claims (33)

1. A ramp comprising:

a frame having first and second end portions;

at least one rung extending substantially between the frame and positioned between the first and second end portions, the at least one rung forming at least a portion of a ramp surface;

a plate extending at least partially between the frame and positioned adjacent to at least one of the first and second end portions; and

a lip pivotally attached to the plate,

wherein the ramp is in an operative position when the plate is positioned on a loading surface and is in an inoperative position when the plate is not positioned on the loading surface, whereby when in the inoperative position with the lip engaged with the loading surface the lip pivots to release the ramp from the loading surface.

2. The ramp of claim 1 , further comprising a biasing member operatively coupled to the lip wherein the biasing member biases the lip downward relative to the ramp surface.

3. The ramp of claim 2 , wherein the biasing member permits pivoting of the lip upwardly relative to the ramp surface a sufficient amount to release the ramp from the loading surface when in the inoperative position.

4. The ramp of claim 1 , wherein the plate is free of engagement with the loading surface when the ramp is in the inoperative position.

5. The ramp of claim 1 , wherein the frame is free of engagement with the loading surface when the ramp is in the inoperative position.

6. The ramp of claim 1 , wherein the lip biases downwardly when the ramp is in the operative position.

7. The ramp of claim 1 , wherein when the ramp is in the operative position the plate generally prevents the lip from pivoting to release the ramp from the loading surface.

8. The ramp of claim 1 , wherein the lip provides a visual indication of the ramp being in the inoperative position.

9. A ramp comprising:

a frame having first and second end portions;

at least one rung extending between at least a portion of the frame, the rung forming at least a portion of a ramp surface; and

a lip pivotally attached to the frame and biased downward relative to the ramp surface, wherein the lip pivots away from the ramp surface when ramp is in an inoperative position relative to a loading surface.

10. The ramp of claim 9 , wherein the lip pivots to release the ramp from the loading surface.

11. The ramp of claim 9 , further comprising a biasing member engaged with the lip, the biasing member biases the lip downward relative to the ramp surface and pivots the lip away from the ramp surface releasing the ramp from the loading surface when the ramp is in the inoperative position.

12. The ramp of claim 9 , wherein the frame is free of engagement with the loading surface when the ramp is in the inoperative position.

13. The ramp of claim 9 , wherein the loading surface is a tailgate of a vehicle and the lip pivots to cause the ramp to fall from the tailgate when the lip is solely engaged with the tailgate.

14. The ramp of claim 9 , further comprising a plate extending at least partially between the frame at either of the first and second end portions of the frame, wherein lip is pivotally attached with the plate whereby the ramp is in an operative position when the plate is positioned on the loading surface and is in the inoperative position when the plate is not positioned on the loading surface.

15. A ramp comprising:

a frame having first and second end portions;

a ramp surface positioned at least partially between the frame;

a plate extending at least partially between the frame at either of the first and second end portions of the frame;

a lip pivotally attached to the plate; and

a biasing member operatively engaged with the lip biasing the lip downward relative to the ramp surface and permitting pivoting of the lip away from the ramp surface when the ramp is positioned in an inoperative position relative to a loading surface.

16. The ramp of claim 15 , wherein the ramp being in an operative position generally prevents the lip from pivoting away from the ramp surface.

17. The ramp of claim 15 , wherein the loading surface includes a portion of a vehicle whereby when the ramp being in the inoperative position allows the lip to pivot away from the portion of the vehicle causing the ramp to be released from engagement with the portion of the vehicle.

18. The ramp of claim 15 , wherein the frame and plate are free of engagement with the loading surface when the ramp is in the inoperative position.

19. The ramp of claim 15 , wherein the lip is pivotable about 90 degrees away from the ramp surface when the ramp is in the inoperative position.

20. The ramp of claim 19 , wherein the lip pivoting about 90 degrees away from the ramp surface causes the ramp to fall away from the loading surface.
