Abstract

Provided herein, in some embodiments, is an apparatus including a plastic component; a stationary component including a thrustplate; a rotatable component including the plastic component affixed to a sleeve; and at least a first fluid dynamic bearing formed between the thrustplate and an opposing surface of the rotatable component.

Claims (34)

1. An apparatus comprising:

a plastic component;

a stationary component comprising a thrustplate; and

a rotatable component comprising a sleeve, a counterplate, and the plastic component,

wherein the plastic component is positioned outside the sleeve, and

wherein the thrustplate and the counterplate are positioned to form a first fluid dynamic bearing at a top portion of the sleeve.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the diameter of the sleeve is greater than the diameter of the thrustplate or the counterplate.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the diameter of the sleeve is greater than the diameter of each of the thrustplate and the counterplate.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the thrustplate and the counterplate are positioned within the top portion of the sleeve.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the stationary component further comprises a shaft affixed to the thrustplate, positioned to form a second fluid dynamic bearing with the sleeve.

6. The apparatus of claim 5 , wherein the first fluid dynamic bearing comprises a thrust bearing, and wherein the second fluid dynamic bearing comprises a journal bearing.

7. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the plastic component comprises a hub for at least one disc, the sleeve is metal, and the hub is affixed to the sleeve.

8. An apparatus comprising:

a plastic component;

a stationary component comprising a thrustplate; and

a rotatable component comprising a sleeve and the plastic component;

wherein the plastic component is affixed to the sleeve, and

wherein the thrustplate and the plastic component are positioned to form a first fluid dynamic bearing.

9. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein a surface of the plastic component faces a radial surface of the thrustplate to form the first fluid dynamic bearing.

10. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein grooves are molded into the surface of the plastic component, and wherein the grooves comprise spiral grooves or herringbone grooves.

11. The apparatus of claim 8 , further comprising a counterplate affixed to the plastic component, wherein a surface of the counterplate faces a radial surface of the thrustplate to form the first fluid dynamic bearing.

12. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the stationary component further comprises a shaft affixed to the thrustplate, positioned to form a second fluid dynamic bearing with the sleeve.

13. The apparatus of claim 12 , wherein the first fluid dynamic bearing comprises a thrust bearing, and wherein the second fluid dynamic bearing comprises a journal bearing.

14. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the plastic component comprises a hub for at least one disc, and wherein the sleeve is metal.

15. An apparatus comprising:

a plastic component;

a stationary component comprising a thrustplate;

a rotatable component comprising the plastic component affixed to a sleeve; and

a first fluid dynamic bearing formed between the thrustplate and an opposing surface of the rotatable component.

16. The apparatus of claim 15 , wherein the opposing surface of the rotatable component comprises an opposing surface of a counterplate.

17. The apparatus of claim 15 , wherein the opposing surface of the rotatable component comprises an opposing surface of the plastic component.

18. The apparatus of claim 15 , wherein the stationary component further comprises a shaft affixed to the thrustplate, and wherein the apparatus further comprises a second fluid dynamic bearing formed between the sleeve and the shaft.

19. The apparatus of claim 18 , wherein the first fluid dynamic bearing comprises a thrust bearing, and wherein the second fluid dynamic bearing comprises a journal bearing.

20. The apparatus of claim 15 , wherein the plastic component comprises a hub for at least one disc.
