Abstract

An autoconfiguring data router is connected to a communications network subnet having a second network data router. The autoconfiguring data router includes a configuration determination module that determines configuration attributes for operably connecting the autoconfiguring data router to the subnet, and an autoconfiguration module that configures the autoconfiguring data router according to the configuration attributes so that the autoconfiguring data router is operably connected to the subnet.

Claims (34)

1. A non-transitory processor-readable medium storing instructions for determining configuration information to support configuration of a network device for connection to a communication network subnet, the instructions comprising:

instructions executable to monitor control traffic on the communication network subnet, at least some of the control traffic not comprising an address of the network device; and

instructions executable to determine, from the control traffic, configuration attributes for connecting the network device to the communication network subnet.

2. The medium of claim 1 , wherein the instructions executable to monitor the control traffic comprise instructions executable to monitor routing protocol messages.

3. The medium of claim 2 , wherein the instructions executable to monitor routing protocol messages comprise instructions executable to monitor Internet Protocol (IP) routing protocol messages.

4. The medium of claim 1 , wherein the instructions executable to monitor the control traffic comprise instructions executable to monitor spanning tree messages.

5. The medium of claim 1 , wherein the instructions further comprise instructions executable to identify the control traffic based on at least one of a broadcast address, a multicast address and a Transmission Control Protocol/User Datagram Protocol port.

6. The medium of claim 1 , wherein the instructions executable to monitor the control traffic comprise instructions executable to determine source addresses in control traffic packets to identify active network devices.

7. The medium of claim 1 , wherein the instructions further comprise instructions executable to present the determined configuration attributes to an operator interface.

8. The medium of claim 7 , wherein the instructions executable to present the determined configuration attributes to the operator interface comprise instructions executable to present the determined configuration attributes with at least some explanatory information.

9. The medium of claim 1 , wherein the instructions executable to present the determined configuration attributes comprise instructions executable to present the determined configuration information unique to each attached communication network subnet.

10. The medium of claim 1 , wherein the instructions executable to present the determined configuration attributes comprise instructions executable to present an IP subnet mask.

11. The medium of claim 1 , wherein the instructions executable to present the determined configuration attributes comprise instructions executable to present at least one of Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) forwarding data and a DHCP server address.

12. The medium of claim 1 , wherein the instructions executable to present the determined configuration attributes comprise instructions executable to present virtual local area network (VLAN) information.

13. The medium of claim 12 , wherein the instructions executable to present VLAN information comprise instructions executable to present at least one of tag identifications, types, protocols, addresses, and port-to-VLAN mappings.

14. The medium of claim 1 , wherein the instructions executable to present determined configuration attributes comprise instructions executable to present Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) information.

15. The medium of claim 14 , wherein the instructions executable to present the STP information comprise instructions executable to present at least one of an indication that a Session Initiation Protocol is enabled, 802.ID VLAN information and source Media Access Control addresses used for Multi Link Trunking configurations.

16. The medium of claim 1 , wherein the instructions executable to present the determined configuration attributes comprise instructions executable to present Routing Information Protocol (RIP) information.

17. The medium of claim 16 , wherein the instructions executable to present the RIP information comprise instructions executable to present an indication that a RIP is enabled.

18. The medium of claim 1 , wherein the instructions executable to present the determined configuration attributes comprise instructions executable to present Open Shortest Path First (OSPF) time information.

19. The medium of claim 18 , wherein the instructions executable to present the OSPF time information comprise instructions executable to present at least one of an indication that an OSPF is enabled, a subnet mask, an OSPF hello timer and an OSPF router dead timer.

20. The medium of claim 1 , wherein the instructions executable to present the determined configuration attributes comprise instructions executable to present Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol (VRRP) information.

The medium of claim 20 , wherein the instructions executable to present the VRRP information comprise instructions executable to present at least one of an indication that a VRRP is enabled, a Virtual Router (VR) identifier, a VR IP address, at least one priority of another router and an advertisement interval.

22. The medium of claim 1 , wherein the instructions executable to present the determined configuration attributes comprise instructions executable to present Topology Discovery Protocol (TDP) information.

23. The medium of claim 22 , wherein the instructions executable to present the TDP information comprise instructions executable to present adjacent IP addresses.

24. The medium of claim 1 , wherein the instructions executable to determine the configuration attributes comprise instructions executable to analyze routing protocol control packets detected by the network device.

25. The medium of claim 1 , wherein the instructions executable to monitor the control traffic in the communication network subnet comprise instructions executable to monitor the control traffic at the network device.

26. The medium of claim 1 , wherein the instructions executable to determine the configuration attributes from the control traffic in the communication network subnet comprise instructions executable to determine the determined configuration attributes at the network device.

27. The medium of claim 1 , wherein the instructions further comprise instructions executable to obtain configuration information from at least one configuration server of the communication network subnet.

The medium of claim 27 , wherein the instructions executable to obtain configuration information from the at least one configuration server of the communication network subnet comprise instructions executable to obtain the configuration information from a central management system of the communication network subnet.

29. The medium of claim 27 , wherein the instructions further comprise instructions executable to adjust the configuration attributes determined from the control traffic using the configuration information obtained from the configuration server of the communication network subnet.

30. The medium of claim 1 , wherein the instructions further comprise instructions executable to obtain the configuration information from at least one router of the communication network subnet.

31. The medium of claim 30 , comprising instructions executable to receive the configuration information directly from the at least one router.

32. The medium of claim 30 , wherein the instructions further comprise instructions executable to adjust the determined configuration attributes from the control traffic using the configuration information obtained from the at least one router.
