Abstract

An expandable spinal fusion implant including a housing, upper and lower endplates, a wedge positioned within the housing and between the upper and lower endplates and a drive mechanism to urge the wedge distally between the upper and lower endplates to increase the separation between the endplates and expand the overall height of the distal end of the implant.

Claims (25)

1. An expandable spinal fusion implant, comprising:

a housing having a tapered distal wall, a proximal wall containing two apertures, and first and second lateral walls defining a hollow interior,

upper and lower endplates each having a bone contacting surface and an interior surface, said interior surface including a ramp,

a wedge positioned within the hollow interior of the housing and between the interior surfaces of the upper and lower endplates, said wedge including opposing angled surfaces dimensioned to engage the ramps on the interior surfaces of the upper and lower endplates, and

a drive mechanism in contact with the wedge,

wherein the drive mechanism is configured to urge the wedge distally between the upper and lower endplates from a collapsed configuration to an expanded configuration, thereby causing the distance between the upper and lower endplates to increase adjacent the distal end of the implant such that the distal height of the implant is greater than the proximal end of the implant when the implant is in the expanded configuration.

2. The expandable spinal fusion implant of claim 1 , wherein the first proximal wall aperture is a graft delivery port and the second proximal wall aperture is a drive screw aperture.

3. The expandable spinal fusion implant of claim 2 , wherein the drive screw aperture is offset from the mid longitudinal axis of the implant.

4. The expandable spinal fusion implant of claim 1 , wherein the upper and lower endplates further comprise distal projections.

5. The expandable spinal fusion implant of claim 4 , wherein the distal wall further comprises slots configured to receive the upper and lower endplate projections.

6. The expandable spinal fusion implant of claim 1 , wherein the wedge further comprises a central fusion aperture to allow for bone growth through the implant.

7. The expandable spinal fusion implant of claim 1 , wherein the wedge further comprises mating features to couple the wedge to the upper and lower endplates.

8. An expandable spinal fusion implant, comprising:

a housing having a tapered distal wall, a proximal wall containing two apertures, a first lateral wall on the anterolateral side, and a second lateral wall on the posterolateral side defining a hollow interior, wherein the first lateral wall is greater in length than the second lateral wall,

upper and lower endplates each having a bone contacting surface and an interior surface, said interior surface including a ramp,

a wedge positioned within the hollow interior of the housing and between the interior surfaces of the upper and lower endplates, said wedge including opposing angled surfaces dimensioned to engage the ramps on the interior surfaces of the upper and lower endplates, and

a drive mechanism in contact with the wedge,

wherein the drive mechanism is configured to urge the wedge distally between the upper and lower endplates from a collapsed configuration to an expanded configuration, thereby causing the distance between the upper and lower endplates to increase adjacent the distal end of the implant such that the distal height of the implant is greater than the proximal end of the implant when the implant is in the expanded configuration.

9. The expandable spinal fusion implant of claim 8 , wherein the upper and lower endplates each increase in height across the endplate from the proximal end to the distal end, and from the posterolateral side to the anterolateral side of the endplate.

10. The expandable spinal fusion implant of claim 9 , wherein the first proximal wall aperture is a graft delivery port and the second proximal wall aperture is a drive screw aperture.

11. The expandable spinal fusion implant of claim 10 , wherein the drive screw aperture is offset from the mid longitudinal axis of the implant.

12. The expandable spinal fusion implant of claim 9 , wherein the upper and lower endplates further comprise distal projections.

13. The expandable spinal fusion implant of claim 12 , wherein the distal wall further comprises slots configured to receive the upper and lower endplate projections.

14. The expandable spinal fusion implant of claim 9 , wherein the wedge further comprises a central fusion aperture to allow for bone growth through the implant.

15. The expandable spinal fusion implant of claim 9 , wherein the wedge further comprises mating features to couple the wedge to the upper and lower endplates.
