Abstract

Devices and methods are adapted to permit fixation and stabilization of the bony elements of the skeleton. The devices permit adjustment and maintenance of the spatial relationship between neighboring bones. The motion between adjacent skeletal segments may be maintained, limited or completely eliminated.

Claims (13)

1. An orthopedic device comprising:

a. first and second bone engagement members configured for placement on each side of a spinous process of a first vertebra;

b. first and second bone fasteners configured for placement in the pedicles of a second vertebra adjacent the first vertebra;

c. a first rod member having a first end adjustably coupled to the first bone engagement member and a second end coupled to the first bone fastener, wherein the first rod member is movable in multiple planes;

d. a second rod member having a first end adjustably coupled to the second bone engagement member and a second end coupled to the second bone fastener, wherein the second rod member is movable in multiple planes;

e. a cross-connector rod extending from the first bone engagement member to the second bone engagement member, wherein the first and second bone engagement members are adjustably coupled to the cross-connector rod; and

d. first and second locking members associated with the first and second bone engagement members, respectively, wherein when the locking members are in an unlocked position, the bone engagement members are adjustable relative to the cross-connector rod and when the locking members are in a locked position, the bone engagement members are immobilized relative to the cross-connector rod.

2. The device of claim 1 , wherein the first and second rod members are adjustable relative to the first and second bone engagement members, respectively, when the locking members are in an unlocked position, and are immobilized relative to the first and second bone engagement members when the locking members are in the locked position.

3. The device of claim 2 , wherein the first and second bone engagement members are adjustable in multiple planes relative to the cross-connector rod.

4. The device of claim 1 , wherein the first and second bone engagement members are adjustably coupled to the cross-connector rod such that they are able to translate toward and away from each other when the locking members are in the unlocked position.

5. The device of claim 1 , wherein the locking members are set screws.

6. The device of claim 1 , further including third and fourth bone fasteners configured for placement in the pedicle of a third vertebra adjacent the second vertebra and wherein the first rod is dimensioned to be received in the first and third bone fasteners and the second rod is dimensioned to be received in the second and fourth bone fasteners.

7. The device of claim 1 , wherein the first and second bone engagement members each have a bone engaging surface, wherein the bone engaging surfaces include barbs.
