Abstract

A secure VPN connection is provided based on user identify and a hardware identifier. A client application may initiate the VPN connection. A client device user may provide identification information to the application, which then sends a VPN connection request to a remote VPN gateway. The VPN gateway may require an equipment identifier to establish the secure VPN gateway. If the hardware ID is registered, the secure VPN connection is established. If the hardware ID is not registered with the VPN gateway, the connection may be denied. In some instances, a connection may be established with an unregistered equipment ID based on settings at the VPN gateway.

Claims (27)

1. A method for establishing a connection, the method comprising:

transmitting a client access request for a virtual private network to a server from a client;

transmitting a client hardware identifier to the server by the client, wherein the client hardware identifier is not mutable and is retrieved from a hardware device on the client by a client application located on the client; and

receiving a level of access from the server based on the client hardware identifier and in response to the client access request.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the level of access is based on a comparison of the client hardware identifier to a list of hardware identifiers at the server.

3. The method of claim 2 , further including receiving a level of access based on an unregistered hardware setting, wherein the level of access is determined based on the client hardware identifier not being a match with the list of hardware identifiers at the server.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the hardware identifier is a hard drive identifier.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the client is an application installed on a mobile device.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising receiving a level of access based on determining that a user identifier associated with a client user matches a registered user identifier.

7. A non-transitory computer readable storage medium having embodied thereon a program, the program being executable by a processor to establishing a connection, the method comprising:

transmitting a client access request for a virtual private network to a server from a client;

transmitting a client hardware identifier to the server by the client, wherein the client hardware identifier is not mutable and is retrieved from a hardware device on the client by a client application located on the client; and

receiving a level of access from the server based on the client hardware identifier and in response to the client access request.

8. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 7 , wherein the level of access is based on a comparison of the client hardware identifier to a list of hardware identifiers at the server.

9. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 8 , further including receiving a level of access based on an unregistered hardware setting, wherein the level of access is determined based on the client hardware identifier not being a match with the list of hardware identifiers at the server.

10. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 7 , wherein the hardware identifier is a hard drive identifier.

11. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 7 , wherein the client is an application installed on a mobile device.

12. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 7 , further comprising receiving a level of access based on determining that a user identifier associated with a client user matches a registered user identifier.

13. A server for establishing a connection, the server comprising:

a processor;

a memory;

one or more modules stored in memory and executable processor to transmit a client access request for a virtual private network to a server from a client, transmit a client hardware identifier to the server by the client, wherein the client hardware identifier is not mutable and is retrieved from a hardware device on the client by a client application located on the client, and receive a level of access from the server based on the client hardware identifier and in response to the client access request.

14. The server of claim 13 , wherein the level of access is based on a comparison of the client hardware identifier to a list of hardware identifiers at the server.

15. The server of claim 14 , further including receiving a level of access based on an unregistered hardware setting, wherein the level of access is determined based on the client hardware identifier not being a match with the list of hardware identifiers at the server.

16. The server of claim 13 , wherein the hardware identifier is a hard drive identifier.

17. The server of claim 13 , wherein the client is an application installed on a mobile device.

18. The server of claim 13 , further comprising receiving a level of access based on determining that a user identifier associated with a client user matches a registered user identifier.
