Abstract

A biosensor includes a working electrode 101 , a counter electrode 102 opposing the working electrode 101 , a working electrode terminal 103 and a working electrode reference terminal 10 connected to the working electrode 101 by wires, and a counter electrode terminal 104 connected to the counter electrode 102 by a wire. By employing a structure with at least three electrodes, it is possible to assay a target substance without being influenced by the line resistance on the working electrode side.

Claims (37)

1. A method for performing assays of a fluid using a biosensor that comprises a first electrode set including a working electrode and a counter electrode; a working electrode terminal and a first reference terminal that are connected to the working electrode; a counter electrode terminal and a second reference terminal that are connected to the counter electrode; and a second electrode set including two electrodes; wherein the second electrode set is disposed near the first electrode set; the method comprising:

connecting the biosensor to a measurement circuit;

performing an assay of the fluid based on a current flowing through the working electrode terminal or the counter electrode terminal;

controlling a voltage between the working electrode and the counter electrode using a voltage detected by the first reference terminal and a voltage detected by the second reference terminal; and

performing another assay of the fluid based on a current flowing between the two electrodes of the second electrode set.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein substantially no current flows through the first reference terminal and the second reference terminal during the step of performing the assay based on a current flowing through the working electrode terminal or the counter electrode terminal.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the assays are different assays.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the connecting step comprises the steps of:

connecting the working electrode terminal to a first terminal of the measurement circuit;

connecting the first reference terminal to a second terminal of the measurement circuit;

connecting the counter electrode terminal to a third terminal of the measurement circuit; and

connecting the second reference terminal to a fourth terminal of the measurement circuit;

wherein the first terminal and the third terminal are located between the second terminal and the fourth terminal.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein:

the biosensor has two electrode terminals respectively connected to the two electrodes of the second electrode set; and

the connecting step further comprises connecting the two electrode terminals to a fifth terminal and a sixth terminal of the measurement circuit, respectively, the fifth terminal and the sixth terminal being located between the first terminal and the third terminal.

The method of claim 1 , wherein in the step of performing the assay of the fluid based on the current flowing through the working electrode terminal or the counter electrode terminal, the measurement circuit uses an amplifier having high input impedance, an input of the amplifier being connected to the first reference terminal.

The method of claim 1 , wherein in the step of performing the assay of the fluid based on the current flowing through the working electrode terminal or the counter electrode terminal, the measurement circuit uses an amplifier having high input impedance, an input of the amplifier being connected to the second reference terminal.

A device configured to be connected to a biosensor that comprises: a first electrode set including a working electrode and a counter electrode; a working electrode terminal and a first reference terminal that are connected to the working electrode; a counter electrode terminal and a second reference terminal that are connected to the counter electrode; and a second electrode set including two electrodes, wherein the second electrode set is disposed near the first electrode set; the device comprising:

a measurement circuit for performing an assay of a fluid based on a current flowing between the working electrode and the counter electrode and for performing another assay of the fluid based on a current flowing between the two electrodes of the second electrode set, wherein the measurement circuit controls a voltage between the working electrode and the counter electrode using a voltage at the first reference terminal and a voltage at the second reference terminal during the assay performed by the first electrode set.

A device configured to be connected to a biosensor that comprises: a first electrode set including a working electrode and a counter electrode; a working electrode terminal and a first reference terminal that are connected to the working electrode; a counter electrode terminal and a second reference terminal that are connected to the counter electrode; and a second electrode set including two electrodes, wherein the second electrode set is disposed near the first electrode set; the device comprising:

a measurement circuit for performing an assay of a fluid based on a current flowing between the working electrode and the counter electrode and for performing another assay of the fluid based on a current flowing between the two electrodes of the second electrode set;

a first terminal configured to be connected to the working electrode terminal;

a second terminal configured to be connected to the first reference terminal;

a third terminal configured to be connected to the counter electrode terminal; and

a fourth terminal configured to be connected to the second reference terminal.

10. The device of claim 9 , wherein the first terminal and the third terminal are located between the second terminal and the fourth terminal.

11. The device of claim 9 , further comprising:

a fifth terminal configured to be connected to an electrode terminal of the biosensor that is connected to one of the two electrodes of the second electrode set; and

a sixth terminal configured to be connected to an electrode terminal of the biosensor that is connected to the other one of the two electrodes of the second electrode set.

12. The device of claim 11 , wherein the fifth terminal and the sixth terminal are located between the first terminal and the third terminal.

13. The device of claim 9 , wherein substantially no current flows through the second terminal and through the fourth terminal during the assay performed by the first electrode set.

14. The device of claim 9 , further comprising an amplifier with high input impedance, an input of the amplifier being connected to the second terminal.

15. The device of claim 9 , further comprising an amplifier with high input impedance, an input of the amplifier being connected to the fourth terminal.

16. A device configured to be connected to a biosensor that comprises: a first electrode set including a working electrode and a counter electrode; a working electrode terminal and a first reference terminal that are connected to the working electrode; a counter electrode terminal and a second reference terminal that are connected to the counter electrode; and a second electrode set including two electrodes, wherein the second electrode set is disposed near the first electrode set; the device comprising:

a measurement circuit for performing an assay of a fluid based on a current flowing between the working electrode and the counter electrode and for performing another assay of the fluid based on a current flowing between the two electrodes of the second electrode set; and

a switch control circuit for controlling connection between the first electrode set and the measurement circuit and for controlling connection between the second electrode set and the measurement circuit.
