Abstract

A capability for controlling a size of a congestion window of an information transmission connection (ITC) is provided. The size of the congestion window of the ITC may be controlled based on a threshold, which may be based on an ideal bandwidth-delay product (IBDP) value. The IBDP value may be based on a product of an information transmission rate measure and a time measure. The information transmission rate measure may be based on a target information transmission rate for the ITC. The time measure may be based on a round-trip time measured between a sender of the ITC and a receiver of the ITC. The threshold may be a cap threshold where the size of the congestion window is prevented from exceeding the cap threshold. The threshold may be a reset threshold which may be used to control a reduction of the size of the congestion window.

Claims (35)

1 . An apparatus, comprising:

a processor and a memory communicatively connected to the processor, the processor configured to:

control a size of a congestion window of an information transmission connection based on a threshold, wherein the threshold is based on an ideal bandwidth-delay product (IBDP) value, wherein the IBDP value is based on a product of an information transmission rate measure and a time measure.

2 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the information transmission rate measure is based on a target information transmission rate for the information transmission connection.

3 . The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the target information transmission rate for the information transmission connection depends on an encoding rate of information to be transmitted via the information transmission connection.

4 . The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the target information transmission rate for the information transmission connection depends on an encoding rate of information to be transmitted via the information transmission connection and a correction factor selected to compensate for overhead.

5 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the time measure is based on a minimum round-trip time measured between a sender of the information transmission connection and a receiver of the information transmission connection.

6 . The apparatus of claim 5 , wherein the minimum round-trip time is determined from a set of round-trip times measured between the sender of the information transmission connection and the receiver of the information transmission connection.

7 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the IBDP value is based on a chunk time of a data chunk to be transmitted via the information transmission connection.

8 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the threshold comprises a cap threshold, wherein the processor is configured to prevent the size of the congestion window from exceeding the cap threshold.

9 . The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the processor is configured to:

determine a value of the cap threshold as a minimum of a first value determined as a function of the IBDP value and a second value comprising a receiver window size advertised by a receiver of the information transmission connection.

10 . The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the first value is computed to be twice the IBDP value.

11 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the threshold comprises a reset threshold, wherein the processor is configured to:

reduce the size of the congestion window, prior to transmitting a new information block from a sender of the information transmission connection toward a receiver of the information transmission connection, based on a determination that the size of the congestion window exceeds the reset threshold and based on a determination that the sender of the information transmission connection has received confirmation that one or more information blocks already transmitted by the sender of the information transmission connection toward the receiver of the information transmission connection have been received by the receiver of the information transmission connection.

12 . The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the processor is configured to:

reduce the size of the congestion window to be equal to the reset threshold.

13 . The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the reset threshold depends on a bottleneck buffer size.

14 . The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein the bottleneck buffer size is fixed.

15 . The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein the bottleneck buffer size is determined dynamically after the information transmission connection is established.

16 . The apparatus of claim 15 , wherein the bottleneck buffer size is determined based on an amount of data transmitted by a sender of the information transmission connection since the sender of the information transmission connection started transmitting a current block of information via the information transmission connection.

17 . The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the processor is configured to:

determine a value of the reset threshold as a minimum of the IBDP value and a bottleneck buffer size.

18 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the processor is configured to control the size of the congestion window based on the threshold and a second threshold, wherein the threshold comprises a cap threshold and the second threshold comprises a reset threshold.

19 . The apparatus of claim 18 , wherein the processor is configured to:

prevent the size of the congestion window from exceeding the cap threshold; and

reduce the size of the congestion window, prior to transmitting a new information block from a sender of the information transmission connection toward a receiver of the information transmission connection, based on a determination that the size of the congestion window exceeds the reset threshold and based on a determination that the sender of the information transmission connection has received confirmation that one or more information blocks already transmitted by the sender of the information transmission connection toward the receiver of the information transmission connection have been received by the receiver of the information transmission connection.

20 . A computer-readable storage medium storing instructions which, when executed by a computer, cause the computer to perform a method, the method comprising:

controlling a size of a congestion window of an information transmission connection based on a threshold, wherein the threshold is based on an ideal bandwidth-delay product (IBDP) value, wherein the IBDP value is based on a product of an information transmission rate measure and a time measure.

21 . A method, comprising:

controlling, using a processor and a memory communicatively connected to the processor, a size of a congestion window of an information transmission connection based on a threshold, wherein the threshold is based on an ideal bandwidth-delay product (IBDP) value, wherein the IBDP value is based on a product of an information transmission rate measure and a time measure.

22 . An apparatus, comprising:

a processor and a memory communicatively connected to the processor, wherein the processor is configured to control a size of a congestion window of an information transmission connection based on a cap threshold and based on a reset threshold, wherein the processor is configured to

prevent the size of the congestion window from exceeding the cap threshold; and

reduce the size of the congestion window, prior to transmitting a new information block from a sender of the information transmission connection toward a receiver of the information transmission connection, based on a determination that the size of the congestion window exceeds the reset threshold and based on a determination that the sender of the information transmission connection has received confirmation that one or more information blocks already transmitted by the sender of the information transmission connection toward the receiver of the information transmission connection have been received by the receiver of the information transmission connection.
