Abstract

A system and method for transcoding data. The system includes an adaptive transcoder that transcodes data to produce transcoded data having a first data rate, and transmits the transcoded data to a client device. The adaptive transcoder receives a quality signal. The adaptive transcoder transcodes the data at a second data rate in response to the adaptive transcoder determining that the quality signal indicates that the first data rate is deficient based on at least one of processing capabilities of the client device and network connection capabilities between the adaptive transcoder and the client device.

Claims (40)

1 . A system for transcoding data, comprising:

an adaptive transcoder having a processor configured to:

1) transcode data to produce transcoded data having a first data rate and transmit the transcoded data to a client device;

2) receive a signal; and

3) transcode the data to produce transcoded data having a second data rate in response to the processor determining that the signal indicates that the first data rate is deficient based on at least one of processing capabilities of the client device and network connection capabilities between the adaptive transcoder and the client device.

2 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the signal indicates a TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet protocol) window size requested by the client device.

3 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the signal indicates the second data rate requested by the client device.

4 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the first data rate is the highest data rate that the adaptive transcoder may transcode data.

5 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the second rate is greater than the first rate when the indictor signal indicates that the client device may process the data at a rate greater than the first rate.

6 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the transcoder transcodes the data at the second data rate by controlling at least one of video quantization, encoding format and video resolution.

7 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the data is transcoded and delivered to the client device as a Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) progressive download.

8 . A media gateway, comprising:

a receiver configured to receive data from a content source;

an adaptive transcoder configured to transcode the data and produce transcoded data having a first data rate;

a cache having a processor configured to:

1) store the transcoded data;

2) transmit the stored data to a client device;

3) receive an indicator signal;

4) send a control signal to the adaptive transcoder instructing the adaptive transcoder to transcode the data and produce transcoded data having second data rate, in response to the processor determining that the indicator signal indicates that the first data rate is deficient based on at least one of processing capabilities of the client device and network connection capabilities between the adaptive transcoder and the client device.

9 . The media gateway of claim 8 , wherein the indicator signal indicates a TCP/IP window size requested by the client device.

10 . The media gateway of claim 8 , wherein the indicator signal indicates the second data rate requested by the client device.

11 . The media gateway of claim 8 , wherein the first data rate is the highest data rate that the adaptive transcoder may transcode data.

12 . The media gateway of claim 8 , wherein the second data rate is greater than the first data rate when the indictor signal indicates that the client device may process the data at a data rate greater than the first data rate.

13 . The media gateway of claim 8 , wherein the transcoder transcodes the data in a format specified by the indicator signal.

14 . The media gateway of claim 8 , wherein the data is transcoded and delivered to the client device as a HTTP progressive download.

15 . A method for transcoding data, comprising:

transcoding data, by a processor, to produce transcoded data having a first data rate;

transmitting, by the processor, the transcoded data to a client device;

receiving, by the processor, a signal; and

transcoding, by the processor, the data at a second data rate in response to the processor determining that the signal indicates that the first data rate is deficient based on at least one of processing capabilities of the client device and network connection capabilities between the processor and the client device.

16 . The method of claim 15 , including:

receiving, by the processor, a TCP/IP window size from the client device as part of the signal.

17 . The method of claim 15 , including:

receiving, by the processor, the second data rate from the client device as part of the signal.

18 . The method of claim 15 , including:

setting, by the processor, the first data rate as the highest data rate of the adaptive transcoder.

19 . The method of claim 15 , including:

setting, by the processor, the second data rate to be greater than the first data rate when the indictor signal indicates that the client device may process the data at a rate greater than the first data rate.

20 . The method of claim 15 , including:

transcoding, by the processor, the data in a format specified by the signal.
