Abstract

Embodiments of the present invention provide systems for incorporating bonding processors while avoiding bonding processor buffer overflow by initiating retransmission requests on all data lines whenever corrupted data is encountered on one data line. Initiating these “extra” retransmission requests equalizes retransmissions delays over all transmission lines, preventing the bonding processor from receiving excess data that cannot be reassembled until the retransmission request is processed.

Claims (63)

1. A system comprising:

a bonding processor;

a first transmission modem configured to receive first data from the bonding processor, wherein the first transmission modem is in communication with a first reception modem;

a second transmission modem configured to receive second data from the bonding processor, wherein the second transmission modem is in communication with a second reception modem, and

a retransmission equalization module (REM) coupled to the bonding processor, wherein the REM is configured to:

responsive to detecting a request for a retransmission of data from the second reception modem, initiate:

a first halt in transmission of the first data from the bonding processor to the first transmission modem while the retransmission is being processed, and

a second halt in transmission of the second data from the bonding processor to the second transmission modem while the retransmission is being processed.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the second transmission modem comprises a packet transfer mode (PTM) encapsulation module.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the PTM encapsulation module is configured to halt receiving the second data from the bonding processor.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the REM is further configured to:

responsive to detecting a completion of the retransmission of data, initiate:

a first resumption of transmission of the first data from the bonding processor to the first transmission modem, and

a second resumption of transmission of the second data from the bonding processor to the second transmission modem.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first reception modem, second reception modem, first transmission modem, and second transmission modem are DSL modems.

6. A method, comprising:

receiving, at a first transmission device, first data transmitted over a first transmission line from a bonding device, wherein the first transmission device is in communication over a second transmission line with a first receiving device;

receiving, at a second transmission device, second data transmitted over a third transmission line from the bonding device, wherein the second transmission device is in communication over a fourth transmission line with a second receiving device;

detecting a request for a retransmission of data from the second receiving device; and

responsive to detecting the request, initiating:

a first halt in transmission of the first data from the bonding device to the first transmission device while the retransmission is being processed, and

a second halt in transmission of the second data from the bonding device to the second transmission device while the retransmission is being processed.

7. The method of claim 6 , further comprising:

responsive to detecting a completion of the retransmission of data, initiating:

a first resumption of transmission of the first data, and

a second resumption of transmission of the second data.

8. A system comprising:

a first reception modem in communication with a first transmission modem coupled to a bonding processor;

a second reception modem in communication with a second transmission modem coupled to the bonding processor; and

a retransmission equalization module (REM) coupled to the first reception modem and the second reception modem, wherein the REM is configured to:

responsive to detecting a request for a retransmission of data from the second reception modem, initiate:

a first halt in transmission of first data from the bonding processor to the first transmission modem while the retransmission is being processed, and

a second halt in transmission of second data from the bonding processor to the second transmission modem while the retransmission is being processed.

9. The system of claim 8 , wherein the second transmission modem comprises a packet transfer mode (PTM) encapsulation module.

10. The system of claim 9 , wherein the PTM encapsulation module is configured to halt receiving the second data from the bonding processor.

11. The system of claim 8 , wherein the REM is further configured to:

responsive to detecting a completion of the retransmission of data, initiate:

a first resumption of transmission of the first data from the bonding processor to the first transmission modern, and

a second resumption of transmission of the second data from the bonding processor to the second transmission modern.

12. The system of claim 9 , wherein the second reception modem is configured to transmit a signal to the second transmission modem to temporarily instruct the second transmission modem to stop receiving data from the bonding processor while the request is being processed.

13. The system of claim 12 , wherein the second reception modem is configured to transmit the signal to a packet transfer mode (PTM) encapsulation module of the second transmission modem.

14. The system of claim 12 , wherein the signal is an All Idle Out-of-synch (AIOOS) signal.

15. The system of claim 12 , further comprising:

a second bonding processor coupled to the first reception modem and the second reception modem.

16. The system of claim 12 , further comprising:

a second REM coupled to the first transmission modem and the second transmission modem.

17. A method, comprising:

receiving first data over a first transmission line from a first transmission modem and second data over a second transmission line from a second transmission modem;

initiating a request for a retransmission of the second data; and

responsive to initiating the request, initiating:

a first halt in transmission of first data from a bonding processor to the first transmission modem while the retransmission is being processed, and

a second halt in transmission of second data from the bonding processor to the second transmission modem while the retransmission is being processed.

18. The method of claim 17 , further comprising:

responsive to detecting a completion of the retransmission of data, initiating:

a first resumption of transmission of the first data, and

a second resumption of transmission of the second data.

19. The method of claim 17 , further comprising:

transmitting a signal to the second transmission modem to temporarily instruct the second transmission modem to stop receiving the second data while the request is being processed.

20. The system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a first physical transmission link coupling the bonding processor to the first transmission modem; and

a second physical transmission link coupling the bonding processor to the second transmission modem, wherein the REM is configured to:

initiate the first halt in transmission of the first data over the first physical transmission link while the retransmission is being processed, and

initiate the second halt in transmission of the second data over the second physical transmission link while the retransmission is being processed.
