Abstract

A shock absorber is disclosed herein with a frequency sensitive damping force that includes a cylinder containing a damping medium, a piston rod which is axially movable in the cylinder, and a piston assembly arranged for axial movement in the damping medium. The piston assembly is connected to the piston rod and divides the cylinder in a working space on each side of the piston. The piston assembly includes a flow path fluidly coupled to a frequency sensitive element movable relative to the piston assembly.

Claims (21)

1. A frequency sensitive shock absorber, comprising:

a cylinder containing a damping medium;

a piston rod positioned for axial movement within the cylinder along a central axis;

a piston assembly coupled to the piston rod and arranged for axial movement in the damping medium along the central axis to separate the cylinder into a first working space on a first side of the piston assembly and a second working space on a second side of the piston assembly, the piston assembly including:

a first flow path allowing flow of the damping medium therein, the first flow path extending between the first side and the second side;

a second flow path distinct from the first flow path, allowing flow of the damping medium therein, the second flow path extending between the first side and the second side and defining a first opening that is fluidly coupled with the first working space and a second opening that is fluidly coupled with the second working space; and

a movable element positioned in the second flow path and movable along the second flow path with respect to the piston assembly between a first position in which the movable element blocks flow through the first opening and a second position in which the movable element blocks flow through the second opening, and the movable element is positionable at an intermediate position allowing flow through both of the first and second openings.

2. The frequency sensitive shock absorber of claim 1 , wherein the first opening is arranged fluidly between the first working space and the movable element.

3. The frequency sensitive shock absorber of claim 1 , wherein the second opening is arranged fluidly between the second working space and the movable element.

4. The frequency sensitive shock absorber of claim 1 , wherein the piston assembly includes a first piston body having an outer surface and a second piston body having an inner surface, the first piston body being arranged within the second piston body to define a cavity between the outer surface of the inner piston body and the inner surface of the second piston body, the cavity comprising at least a portion of the second fluid path.

5. The frequency sensitive shock absorber of claim 4 , wherein the movable element is disposed within the cavity.

6. The frequency sensitive shock absorber of claim 1 , wherein the movable element sealingly contacts opposing surfaces of the piston assembly that define a portion of the second flow path to segregate damping medium within the second flow path.

7. The frequency sensitive shock absorber of claim 1 , wherein the piston assembly includes an unrestricted bleed path extending between the second working space and the first flow path.

8. The frequency sensitive shock absorber of claim 1 , further comprising a valve configured to open and close the first fluid path.

9. A frequency sensitive shock absorber, comprising:

a cylinder containing a damping medium;

a piston rod positioned for axial movement within the cylinder along a central axis;

a piston assembly coupled to the piston rod and arranged for axial movement in the damping medium along the central axis to separate the cylinder into first working space on a first side of the piston assembly and a second working space on a second side of the piston assembly, the piston assembly including:

a channel arranged to allow flow of the damping medium therein, the channel extending between the first side and the second side;

a fluid chamber including a first opening in fluid communication with the first working space and a second opening in fluid communication with the second working space; and

a movable element arranged within the fluid chamber to separate the chamber into a first chamber section and a second chamber section, the moveable element being moveable along the fluid chamber with respect to the piston assembly between a first position in which the movable element blocks flow through the first opening and a second position in which the movable element blocks flow through the second opening, and the movable element is positionable at an intermediate position allowing flow through both of the first and second openings.
