Abstract

A document processing device convertible between a first configuration and a second configuration includes an input receptacle, a transport mechanism, a scanner, and a convertible output area. The input receptacle is configured to receive documents including currency bills therein. The transport mechanism is configured to transport the documents along a transport path from the input receptacle. The scanner is positioned along the transport path and is configured to scan at least a portion of each of the documents transported to generate data associated therewith. The convertible output area is configured to be selectively coupled with a first output assembly and a second output assembly.

Claims (24)

1. A document processing device convertible between a first configuration and a second configuration, the document processing device comprising:

an input receptacle configured to receive documents including currency bills therein;

a transport mechanism configured to transport the documents along a transport path from the input receptacle;

a scanner positioned along the transport path and configured to scan at least a portion of each of the documents transported to generate data associated therewith; and

a convertible output area, the convertible output area being configured to be selectively coupled with either a first detachable output assembly or a second detachable output assembly at a time, the first and the second detachable output assemblies being physically unconnected to the document processing device when detached therefrom.

2. The document processing device of claim 1 , wherein the first detachable output assembly is configured to hold documents therein in an unsecured fashion and wherein the second detachable output assembly is configured to hold documents therein in a secured fashion.

3. The document processing device of claim 2 , wherein the documents include U.S. currency bills of two or more denominations.

4. The document processing device of claim 1 , wherein the first detachable output assembly includes a stacker wheel and an output receptacle configured to contain at least a portion of the documents therein in an unsecured fashion.

5. The document processing device of claim 1 , wherein the second detachable output assembly includes an output port configured to be coupled with an automated document container configured to contain at least a portion of the documents therein in a secured fashion.

6. The document processing device of claim 1 , further comprising a third detachable output assembly integral with the document processing device, the third detachable output assembly including a stacker wheel and an output receptacle configured to hold at least a portion of the documents therein in an unsecured fashion.

7. The document processing device of claim 6 , wherein the output receptacle of the third detachable output assembly is configured to hold about fifty or less documents therein.

8. The document processing device of claim 1 , further comprising a second convertible output area, the second convertible output area being configured to be selectively coupled with a third detachable output assembly and a fourth detachable output assembly.

9. The document processing device of claim 8 , wherein the third detachable output assembly is substantially identical to the first detachable output assembly, and wherein the fourth detachable output assembly is substantially identical to the second detachable output assembly.

10. The document processing device of claim 1 , wherein the document processing device has a footprint of less than about two square feet and a weight of less than about thirty pounds.

11. The document processing device of claim 1 , wherein the transport mechanism is configured to transport the documents along the transport path at a rate of at least about 200 documents per minute.

12. The document processing device of claim 1 , wherein the transport mechanism is configured to transport the documents along the transport path at a rate of at least about 400 documents per minute.

13. The document processing device of claim 1 , wherein the transport mechanism is configured to transport the documents along the transport path at a rate of at least about 600 documents per minute.

14. The document processing device of claim 1 , wherein the transport mechanism is configured to transport the documents along the transport path at a rate of at least about 1000 documents per minute.

15. The document processing device of claim 1 , wherein the transport mechanism is configured to transport the documents along the transport path at a rate of at least about 1500 documents per minute.

16. The document processing device of claim 1 , wherein the transport mechanism is configured to transport the documents along the transport path at a rate of at least about 1600 documents per minute.

17. The document processing device of claim 1 , wherein each of the documents has a wide edge, and wherein the transport mechanism is configured to transport the documents in a wide-edge leading manner.

18. The document processing device of claim 17 , wherein the transport mechanism is configured to transport the documents along the transport path at a rate of at least about 500 documents per minute.

19. The document processing device of claim 17 , wherein the transport mechanism is configured to transport the documents along the transport path at a rate of at least about 800 documents per minute.

20. The document processing device of claim 17 , wherein the transport mechanism is configured to transport the documents along the transport path at a rate of at least about 1200 documents per minute.
