Abstract

A system is provided that minimizes wheel intrusion into the occupant compartment during a small overlap collision. The system uses a front suspension subframe that is rigidly mounted to the front rails during normal vehicle operation, but which is designed to rotate during a small overlap collision, thereby allowing the attached front wheel assembly to swivel out and away from the vehicle. As a result, the wheel assembly directly involved in the collision is not driven into the passenger cabin.

Claims (19)

1. A small overlap impact management system for use in a vehicle, said vehicle comprising a left front wheel assembly and a right front wheel assembly, said small overlap impact management system configured to manage the transfer of an impact load resulting from a small overlap impact, said small overlap impact management system comprising:

a cross-member mechanically coupled to a chassis of said vehicle;

a subframe, said left front wheel assembly and said right front wheel assembly attached to said subframe, said subframe comprising a first subframe activation lever arm and a second subframe activation lever arm, said first subframe activation lever arm extending from said subframe and positioned in front of at least a portion of a left front wheel and a left front tire corresponding to said left front wheel assembly, said second subframe activation lever arm extending from said subframe and positioned in front of at least a portion of a right front wheel and a right front tire corresponding to said right front wheel assembly;

a hinge-mount, wherein said subframe is coupled to said cross-member via said hinge-mount, said hinge-mount allowing said subframe to swivel within a plane parallel to a vehicle chassis containing plane; and

a plurality of break-away fasteners, wherein said subframe is attached to a pair of vehicle front rails via said plurality of break-away fasteners, wherein said plurality of break-away fasteners prevent said subframe from swiveling within said plane during normal vehicle operation, wherein if said small overlap impact is proximate to said left front wheel assembly then said impact load is transferred through said first subframe activation lever arm to said subframe and causes said plurality of break-away fasteners to release, wherein said impact load forces said subframe to rotate about said hinge-mount in a first direction, wherein rotation of said subframe in said first direction causes said left front wheel assembly to swivel out and away from the vehicle, and wherein if said small overlap impact is proximate to said right front wheel assembly then said impact load is transferred through said second subframe activation lever arm to said subframe and causes said plurality of break-away fasteners to release, wherein said impact load forces said subframe to rotate about said hinge-mount in a second direction, wherein rotation of said subframe in said second direction causes said right front wheel assembly to swivel out and away from the vehicle.

2. The small overlap impact management system of claim 1 , wherein said cross-member is mechanically coupled to a left-side rocker and a right-side rocker.

3. The small overlap impact management system of claim 1 , wherein said subframe and said first and second subframe activation lever arms are fabricated as a single piece.

4. The small overlap impact management system of claim 1 , wherein said first and second subframe activation lever arms are attached to said subframe using a fabrication technique selected from welding, bonding, soldering, brazing and bolting.

The small overlap impact management system of claim 1 , wherein rotation of said subframe in said first direction is limited by interference between a first trailing edge of said subframe and a first portion of said cross-member, and wherein rotation of said subframe in said second direction is limited by interference between a second trailing edge of said subframe and a second portion of said cross-member.

The small overlap impact management system of claim 1 , wherein a first leading edge of said subframe is shaped to promote redirection of said impact load away from said vehicle when said subframe rotates in said first direction, and wherein a second leading edge of said subframe is shaped to promote redirection of said impact load away from said vehicle when said subframe rotates in said second direction.

The small overlap impact management system of claim 1 , further comprising a plurality of strengthening members configured to distribute said impact load throughout said vehicle chassis, wherein a first end portion of each of said plurality of strengthening members is coupled to said cross-member in a region proximate to said hinge-mount, and wherein a distal end portion of each of said plurality of strengthening members is coupled to said vehicle chassis.

The small overlap impact management system of claim 7 , further comprising a plurality of secondary cross-members mechanically coupling a left-side rocker to a right-side rocker, wherein said distal end portion of each of said plurality of strengthening members is coupled to one of a plurality of secondary cross-member attachment locations.

The small overlap impact management system of claim 1 , wherein said vehicle is an electric vehicle and said small overlap impact management system further comprises a battery pack, wherein said battery pack is an undercarriage-mounted battery pack and said battery pack is mechanically attached to said vehicle chassis.

10. The small overlap impact management system of claim 9 , wherein said hinge-mount is mechanically coupled to said battery pack via said cross-member.

11. The small overlap impact management system of claim 10 , wherein said cross-member is incorporated within said battery pack.

The small overlap impact management system of claim 9 , further comprising a plurality of strengthening members configured to distribute said impact load throughout said vehicle chassis, wherein a first end portion of each of said plurality of strengthening members is coupled to said cross-member in a region proximate to said hinge-mount, and wherein a distal end portion of each of said plurality of strengthening members is coupled to said vehicle chassis.

The small overlap impact management system of claim 12 , wherein said distal end portion of each of said plurality of strengthening members is coupled to one of a plurality of battery pack attachment locations, wherein said battery pack is mechanically attached to said vehicle chassis via said battery pack attachment locations.

The small overlap impact management system of claim 9 , further comprising a plurality of strengthening members incorporated into a battery pack enclosure panel of said battery pack, said plurality of strengthening members configured to distribute said impact load throughout said vehicle chassis.

The small overlap impact management system of claim 14 , wherein a first end portion of each of said plurality of strengthening members is proximate to said hinge-mount, and wherein a distal end portion of each of said plurality of strengthening members is coupled to one of a plurality of battery pack attachment locations, wherein said battery pack is mechanically attached to said vehicle chassis at said battery pack attachment locations.
