Abstract

An Internet Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) identifies a Long Term Evolution (LTE) network serving the UE. The IMS receives a Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) Invite message for the media session to the UE and responsively transfers a status request for delivery to the LTE network serving the UE. The LTE network identifies a status of an LTE base station serving the UE and identifying an alternative communication network serving the UE. The LTE network determines that the media session should be redirected to the alternative communication network based on the status of the LTE base station and the identified alternative communication network serving the UE. The LTE network transfers a status response for delivery to the IMS indicating media session redirection to the alternative communication network. The IMS then transfers the SIP Invite message for the media session to the UE for delivery to the alternative communication network serving the UE.

Claims (30)

1. A method of operating a data communication network to redirect a media session to User Equipment (UE), the method comprising:

an Internet Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) identifying a Long Term Evolution (LTE) network serving the UE;

the IMS receiving a Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) Invite message for the media session to the UE and responsively transferring a status request for delivery to the LTE network serving the UE;

responsive to the status request, the LTE network identifying a status of an LTE base station serving the UE and identifying an alternative communication network serving the UE;

responsive to the status request, the LTE network determining that the media session should be redirected to the alternative communication network based on the status of the LTE base station and the identified alternative communication network serving the UE;

the LTE network transferring a status response for delivery to the IMS indicating media session redirection to the alternative communication network; and

the IMS transferring the SIP Invite message for the media session to the UE for delivery to the alternative communication network serving the UE.

The method of claim 1 wherein the LTE network identifying the status of the LTE base station serving the UE comprises a Policy Charging and Rules Function (PCRF) receiving the status request from the IMS and transferring the status request for delivery to a Mobility Management Entity (MME) managing the UE over a Diameter message.

The method of claim 1 wherein the LTE network identifying the status of the LTE base station serving the UE comprises a Mobility Management Entity (MME) transferring the status request for delivery to the LTE base station serving the UE and receiving a base station response transferred by the LTE base station indicating the status of the LTE base station serving the UE.

The method of claim 1 wherein the LTE network identifying the status of the LTE base station serving the UE comprises a Mobility Management Entity (MME) transferring the status request for delivery to the LTE base station serving the UE and receiving a base station response transferred by the LTE base station indicating Quality-of-Service Class Identifier 1 (QCI 1) loading rates for the LTE base station serving the UE.

The method of claim 1 wherein the LTE network identifying the status of the LTE base station serving the UE comprises a Mobility Management Entity (MME) transferring the status request for delivery to the LTE base station serving the UE and receiving a base station response transferred by the LTE base station indicating Hybrid Automatic Repeat Request (HARM) retransmission rates for the LTE base station serving the UE.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein the LTE network identifying the status of the LTE base station serving the UE comprises a Mobility Management Entity (MME) transferring a page to the UE over the LTE base station and receiving a page response transferred by the UE over the LTE base station.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein the LTE network identifying the status of the LTE base station serving the UE comprises a Mobility Management Entity (MME) processing a Non-Access Stratum (NAS) message transferred by the UE that indicates the status of the LTE base station serving the UE.

8. The method of claim 1 wherein the LTE network identifying the alternative communication network serving the UE comprises a Mobility Management Entity (MME) processing a Non-Access Stratum (NAS) message transferred by the UE that indicates the alternative communication network serving the UE.

The method of claim 1 wherein the LTE network identifying the alternative communication network serving the UE comprises a Mobility Management Entity (MME) identifying the alternative communication network serving the UE based on a prior UE registration through the MME over the alternative communication network.

10. The method of claim 1 further comprising, in response to receiving the SIP Invite message for the media session to the UE, the IMS holding the SIP Invite message for the media session to the UE and responsively transferring the status request for delivery to the LTE network serving the UE.

11. A data communication network to redirect a media session to User Equipment (UE), the data communication network comprising:

an Internet Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) configured to identify a Long Term Evolution (LTE) network serving the UE, receive a Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) Invite message for the media session to the UE, and responsively transfer a status request for delivery to the LTE network serving the UE;

responsive to the status request, the LTE network configured to identify a status of an LTE base station serving the UE, identify an alternative communication network serving the UE, and determine that the media session should be redirected to the alternative communication network based on the status of the LTE base station and the identified alternative communication network serving the UE;

the LTE network configured to transfer a status response for delivery to the IMS indicating media session redirection to the alternative communication network; and

the IMS configured to transfer the SIP Invite message for the media session to the UE for delivery to the alternative communication network serving the UE.

The data communication network of claim 11 wherein the LTE network configured to identify the status of the LTE base station serving the UE comprises a Policy Charging and Rules Function (PCRF) configured to receive the status request from the IMS and transfer the status request for delivery to a Mobility Management Entity (MME) managing the UE over a Diameter message.

The data communication network of claim 11 wherein the LTE network configured to identify the status of the LTE base station serving the UE comprises a Mobility Management Entity (MME) configured to transfer the status request for delivery to the LTE base station serving the UE and receive a base station response transferred by the LTE base station indicating the status of the LTE base station serving the UE.

The data communication network of claim 11 wherein the LTE network configured to identify the status of the LTE base station serving the UE comprises a Mobility Management Entity (MME) configured to transfer the status request for delivery to the LTE base station serving the UE and receive a base station response transferred by the LTE base station indicating Quality-of-Service Class Identifier 1 (QCI 1) loading rates for the LTE base station serving the UE.

The data communication network of claim 11 wherein the LTE network configured to identify the status of the LTE base station serving the UE comprises a Mobility Management Entity (MME) configured to transfer the status request for delivery to the LTE base station serving the UE and receive a base station response transferred by the LTE base station indicating Hybrid Automatic Repeat Request (HARM) retransmission rates for the LTE base station serving the UE.

The data communication network of claim 11 wherein the LTE network configured to identify the status of the LTE base station serving the UE comprises a Mobility Management Entity (MME) configured to transfer a page to the UE over the LTE base station and receive a page response transferred by the UE over the LTE base station.

17. The data communication network of claim 11 wherein the LTE network configured to identify the status of the LTE base station serving the UE comprises a Mobility Management Entity (MME) configured to process a Non-Access Stratum (NAS) message transferred by the UE that indicates the status of the LTE base station serving the UE.

18. The data communication network of claim 11 wherein the LTE network configured to identify the alternative communication network serving the UE comprises a Mobility Management Entity (MME) configured to process a Non-Access Stratum (NAS) message transferred by the UE that indicates the alternative communication network serving the UE.

The data communication network of claim 11 wherein the LTE network configured to identify the alternative communication network serving the UE comprises a Mobility Management Entity (MME) configured to identify the alternative communication network serving the UE based on a prior UE registration through the MME over the alternative communication network.

20. The data communication network of claim 11 further comprising, in response to the IMS configured to receive the SIP Invite message for the media session to the UE, the IMS configured to hold the SIP Invite message for the media session to the UE and responsively transfer the status request for delivery to the LTE network serving the UE.
