Abstract

Reduced-pair Ethernet patch cords include a twisted pair cable that has a pair of insulated conductors that are contained within a cable jacket. A connector is mounted on a first end of the cable. The connector includes a connector housing and a strain relief unit that is mounted on the cable at the interface between the cable and the connector housing. The strain relief unit includes a plurality of internal protrusions that contact the cable jacket.

Claims (35)

1. An Ethernet patch cord, comprising:

a single twisted pair cable comprising a pair of twisted conductors, wherein each conductor of the single twisted pair has a termination end;

a connector mounted on a first end of the cable, the connector including:

a connector housing having a bore there through, the bore defined by a cable receiving cavity and a contact carrier cavity, the connector housing configured to receive the termination end of each of the conductors of the single twisted pair;

a contact carrier housed within the contact carrier cavity, the contact carrier having first and second contacts, the first and second contacts coupleable to the respective termination ends of each of the conductors of the single twisted pair, wherein the conductors of the single twisted pair remain twisted together all the way up to the point where the termination end of each of the conductors terminates into their respective contacts; and

a strain relief structure configured to resist rotation of the single twisted pair cable relative to the connector housing.

2. The Ethernet patch cord of claim 1 , wherein the first and second contacts comprise socket contacts.

3. The Ethernet patch cord of claim 1 , wherein the strain relief structure comprises a cable-gripping member and a compression member configured to compress the cable-gripping member against the single twisted pair cable.

4. The Ethernet patch cord of claim 3 , wherein the cable-gripping member is configured to engage a jacket of the single twisted pair cable.

5. The Ethernet patch cord of claim 4 , wherein the cable-gripping member includes at least one arm having at least one tooth extending longitudinally from the at least one arm, the at least one tooth configured to engage the jacket of the single twisted pair cable upon compression of the cable-gripping member by the compression member, the engaged tooth configured to prevent rotation of the single twisted pair cable relative to the cable-gripping member.

6. The Ethernet patch cord of claim 5 , wherein cable-gripping member includes a stop feature to engage a mating feature in the connector housing, the stop feature configured to prevent rotation of the cable-gripping member relative to the connector housing.

7. The Ethernet patch cord of claim 5 , wherein the compression member includes a compression wedge corresponding to each arm of the cable-gripping member, the compression wedge configured to overlap the corresponding arm and apply a radial force to the corresponding arm.

8. The Ethernet patch cord of claim 7 , wherein the compression member includes a latch to engage a mating feature in the connector housing, the engaged latch configured to prevent rotation of the compression member relative to the connector housing.

9. The Ethernet patch cord of claim 4 , wherein the cable-gripping member comprises a c-shaped ring having an interior surface presenting at least one extending protrusion, the at least one extending protrusion configured to engage the jacket of the single twisted pair cable upon compression of the cable-gripping member by the compression member, the engaged protrusion configured to prevent rotation of the single twisted pair cable relative to the cable-gripping member.

10. The Ethernet patch cord of claim 9 , wherein the c-shaped ring has a first end and a second end, and wherein compression of the cable-gripping member presses the first and second ends of the c-shaped ring together.

11. The Ethernet patch cord of claim 9 , wherein the shape of the protrusion is of a square, rectangular, triangular, or v-shaped configuration.

12. The Ethernet patch cord of claim 9 , wherein the at least one extending protrusion comprises a plurality of extending protrusions extending at one or more angles from a longitudinal direction of the cable-gripping member.

13. A method of connectorizing a single twisted pair cable having a first conductor and a second conductor, the method comprising:

terminating a termination end of the first conductor and a termination end of a second conductor to first and second contacts, respectively, while maintaining the twist of the conductors up to the point of termination;

inserting the terminated ends of the first and second conductors into a connector housing;

coupling a strain relief structure intermediate a jacket of the single twisted pair cable and the connector housing, wherein the strain relief structure is configured to resist rotation of the single twisted pair cable relative to the strain relief structure and to resist rotation of the strain relief structure itself relative to the connector housing.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the strain relief structure comprises a cable-gripping member and a compression member.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the cable-gripping member is configured to engage the jacket of the single twisted pair cable.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the compression member is configured to engage the connector housing and to compress the cable-gripping member.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein the cable-gripping member engages the jacket of the single twisted pair cable with a plurality of protrusions extending from the cable-gripping member towards the single twisted pair cable.

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein the cable-gripping member includes a stop feature configured to engage a mating feature of the connector housing.

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein the compression member includes a latching feature to engage a mating feature of the connector housing.

20. A patch cord, comprising:

a single twisted pair cable comprising a first conductor and a second conductor, wherein each conductor of the single twisted pair has a termination end;

a connector mounted on a first end of the cable, the connector having a housing and a strain relief structure, wherein the termination ends of the first and second conductors are terminated to first and second contacts, respectively, the first and second contacts housed within the connector, wherein the twist of the first and second conductors is maintained up to the point of termination, and

wherein the strain relief structure is positioned intermediate a jacket of the single twisted pair cable and the housing, the strain relief structure configured to engage both the jacket and the housing, and to resist rotation of the single twisted pair cable relative to the strain relief structure and to resist its own rotation relative to the connector housing.

21. A connectorized cable, comprising:

a cable; and

a connector mounted on a first end of the cable, the connector having a housing and a strain relief structure,

wherein the strain relief structure is positioned intermediate a jacket of the cable and the housing, the strain relief structure configured to engage both the jacket and the housing, and to resist rotation of the cable relative to the strain relief structure and to resist its own rotation relative to the connector housing.
