Abstract

An apparatus for cone beam computed tomography of an extremity has a digital radiation detector and a first device to move the detector along a circular detector path extending so that the detector moves both at least partially around a first extremity of the patient and between the first extremity and a second, adjacent extremity. The detector path has radius R 1 sufficient to position the extremity approximately centered in the detector path. There is a radiation source with a second device to move the source along a concentric circular source path having a radius R 2 greater than radius R 1 , radius R 2 sufficiently long to allow adequate radiation exposure of the first extremity for an image capture by the detector. A first circumferential gap in the source path allows the second extremity to be positioned in the first circumferential gap during image capture.

Claims (34)

1. An apparatus for cone beam computed tomographic imaging, the apparatus comprising:

a digital radiation detector and a radiation source configured to move about an imaging axis, wherein a radial distance from the source to the imaging axis is greater than a radial distance from the detector to the imaging axis;

a source transport assembly configured to move the source about the imaging axis;

a detector transport assembly configured to move the detector about the imaging axis; and

a C-shaped support attached to and supporting the source and the detector,

wherein the source transport assembly and the detector transport assembly are configured to move at least one of the source and the detector independently, and wherein the apparatus is configured to allow a subject to be positioned at, or proximate to, the imaging axis by moving the subject through an opening of the C-shaped support.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the detector transport assembly is configured to move the detector while the source transport assembly is configured to not move the source.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the detector transport assembly and the source transport assembly are configured to independently move the source and the detector about the imaging axis in unison.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the detector is configured to capture radiographic images of a subject positioned at the imaging axis, which subject is radiographically exposed using the radiation source.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the source transport assembly and the detector transport assembly are configured to allow a portion of a subject to be positioned at the imaging axis by moving the portion of the subject in a direction substantially perpendicular to the imaging axis and substantially in a plane defined by movement of the source and the detector about the imaging axis.

6. The apparatus of claim 5 , further comprising a C-shaped housing enclosing the C-shaped support, the digital radiation detector, the radiation source, the source transport assembly, and the detector transport assembly,

wherein the C-shaped housing comprises a gap to allow the portion of the subject to be positioned at the imaging axis by moving the portion of the subject in the direction substantially perpendicular to the imaging axis.

7. An apparatus for cone beam computed tomographic imaging, the apparatus comprising:

a digital radiation detector and a radiation source configured to revolve about an imaging axis, wherein a radial distance from the source to the imaging axis is greater than a radial distance from the detector to the imaging axis; and

a source transport assembly configured to move the source about the imaging axis;

a detector transport assembly configured to move the detector about the imaging axis; and

a C-shaped support attached to and supporting the source and the detector,

wherein the source transport assembly and the detector transport assembly are configured to move at least one of the source and the detector into diametrically opposed positions across the imaging access, and to move at least one of the source and the detector into a parked position wherein the source and the detector are adjacent to each other on one side of the imaging axis, and

wherein the apparatus is configured to allow a subject to be positioned at, or proximate to, the imaging axis by moving the subject through an opening of the C-shaped support.

8. The apparatus of claim 7 , wherein the detector transport assembly is configured to move the detector while the source transport assembly is configured to not move the source.

9. The apparatus of claim 7 , wherein the detector transport assembly and the source transport assembly are further configured to independently move the source and the detector about the imaging axis in unison.

10. The apparatus of claim 7 , wherein the detector is configured to capture radiographic images of a subject positioned at the imaging axis, which subject is radiographically exposed using the radiation source.

11. The apparatus of claim 7 , wherein the source transport assembly and the detector transport assembly are configured to allow a portion of a subject to be positioned at the imaging axis by moving the portion of the subject in a direction substantially perpendicular to the imaging axis and substantially in a plane defined by movement of the source and the detector about the imaging axis.

12. The apparatus of claim 11 , further comprising a C-shaped housing enclosing the C-shaped support, the digital radiation detector, the radiation source, the source transport assembly, and the detector transport assembly,

wherein the C-shaped housing comprises a gap to allow the portion of the subject to be positioned at the imaging axis by moving the portion of the subject in the direction substantially perpendicular to the imaging axis.

13. A method of radiographic imaging, the method comprising:

attaching an x-ray source and a digital radiographic detector to a C-shaped support arm for supporting the source and the detector;

mechanically moving at least one of the x-ray source and the digital radiographic detector into a position adjacent to each other on one side of an imaging axis;

positioning a subject to be imaged at the imaging axis by moving the subject through an opening of the C-shaped support arm;

independently moving at least one of the source and the detector into diametrically opposed positions across the imaging axis; and

independently moving the source along a source path and the detector along a detector path about the imaging axis in unison, wherein the source path is further from the imaging axis than the detector path, and firing the source multiple times.

14. The method of claim 13 , further comprising moving the detector into the diametrically opposed position and not moving the source.

15. The method of claim 13 , wherein the step of positioning the subject to be imaged at the imaging axis comprises moving the subject in a direction perpendicular to the imaging axis.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the step of positioning the subject to be imaged at the imaging axis further comprises moving the subject parallel to a plane formed by the source and the detector moving about the imaging axis.
