Abstract

A flow diverter for diverting flow between a toilet bowl and a toilet tank, the flow diverter having: a body with an inlet, outlet and pressure relief vent; and a flow adjustment mechanism rotatable around the outlet to selectively divert different percentages of flow between the outlet and the pressure relief vent by moving a stopper in and out of the outlet by rotating a sleeve of the flow adjustment mechanism around the outlet.

Claims (37)

1. A flow diverter, comprising:

a body having an inlet, an outlet and a pressure relief vent between the inlet and the outlet;

a flow adjustment mechanism configured and arranged to selectively divert different percentages of flow between the outlet and the pressure relief vent, the flow mechanism comprising a rotatable element positioned on the body around the outlet; and

wherein a siphon force applied to the outlet is configured to draw air into the pressure relief vent.

2. A flow diverter comprising:

a body having an inlet, an outlet and a pressure relief vent between the inlet and the outlet;

a flow adjustment mechanism configured and arranged to selectively divert different percentages of fluid flow between the outlet and the pressure relief vent, wherein the flow adjustment mechanism is rotatable around the outlet of the body and comprises:

a rotatable element received over the outlet, the rotatable element having a threaded inner surface that is configured to mate with a threaded outer surface of the outlet; and

a stopper that is slidably received into the outlet.

3. The flow diverter of claim 2 , wherein the stopper is configured and arranged to be moved axially in the outlet as the rotatable element is rotated around the outlet.

4. The flow diverter of claim 3 , wherein axial movement of the stopper varies the size of a fluid path through the outlet.

5. The flow diverter of claim 4 , wherein the size of the fluid path through the outlet is continuously adjustable as the rotatable element is rotated.

6. The flow diverter of claim 4 , configured and arranged such that a fluid path through the outlet is around the stopper.

7. The flow diverter of claim 2 , wherein the stopper has an internal bore extending partially therethrough.

8. The flow diverter of claim 1 , wherein the body is curved such that fluid flow into the inlet is not co-axial with fluid flow out of the outlet.

9. The flow diverter of claim 8 , configured such that any fluid flow into the inlet is in a direction parallel to fluid flow out of the outlet.

10. The flow diverter of claim 1 , configured such that any fluid flow into the inlet is in a direction perpendicular to flow out of the pressure relief vent.

11. The flow diverter of claim 1 , configured such that any fluid flow into the pressure relief vent is perpendicular to fluid flow through the inlet and outlet.

12. The flow diverter of claim 1 , configured such that any fluid flow from the outlet is configured to be diverted to a toilet bowl and fluid flow out of the pressure relief vent is configured to be diverted to a toilet tank.

13. The flow diverter of claim 1 , configured such that any fluid flow from the outlet is diverted to the toilet tank and fluid flow out of the pressure relief vent is diverted to the toilet bowl.

14. A flow diverter comprising: a body having an inlet, a first outlet and a second outlet; and

a fluid flow adjustment mechanism rotatable within the body and configured and arranged to selectively divert different percentages of fluid flow between the first outlet and the second outlet,

wherein the body has a cylindrical section, and wherein the flow adjustment mechanism comprises a curved rotatable wall portion that can be rotated in the cylindrical section to change or block fluid flow into either the first outlet or the second outlet,

wherein the rotatable wall has a C-shaped or W-shaped cross-section that extends at least approximately one half of the way around the cylindrical section.

15. The flow diverter of claim 14 , wherein the first outlet is configured and arranged to divert fluid flow to a toilet bowl, and a second outlet is configured and arranged to divert fluid flow to a toilet tank.

16. The flow diverter of claim 14 , wherein the W-shaped cross-section extends across the center of the cylindrical section of the body.

17. The flow diverter of claim 14 , further comprising a detent feature configured and arranged to selectively adjust the position of the curved rotatable wall within the cylindrical section.

18. The flow diverter of claim 14 , wherein the body further comprises an overflow tube clasp configured and arranged for mounting the body onto an overflow tube such that fluid flow from the first outlet is directed into a mouth of the overflow tube, and fluid flow from the second outlet is directed into away from the mouth of the overflow tube and into a toilet tank.

19. A flow diverter, comprising: a body having an inlet, a first outlet and a second outlet; and

a flow adjustment mechanism rotatable within the body and configured and arranged to selectively divert different percentages of fluid flow between the first outlet and the second outlet; and

an air vent and diaphragm in the body configured and arranged to prevent a siphon fluid flow from the first or second outlet back to the inlet.

20. The flow diverter of claim 19 , wherein the first outlet is configured and arranged to divert fluid flow to a toilet bowl, and a second outlet is configured and arranged to divert fluid flow to a toilet tank.

21. The flow diverter of claim 19 , wherein the body has a cylindrical section, and wherein the fluid flow adjustment mechanism comprises a curved rotatable wall portion that is configured and arranged to be rotated in the cylindrical section to block fluid flow into either the first outlet or the second outlet.

22. The flow diverter of claim 14 , configured such that any fluid flow from the second outlet is directed back into a fill valve.

23. The flow diverter of claim 19 , configured such that any fluid flow from the second outlet is directed back into a fill valve.

24. The flow diverter of claim 19 , wherein the diaphragm in the body is positioned near the top of the body.

25. The flow diverter of claim 19 , wherein the diaphragm in the body is positioned above the inlet, first outlet and second outlet.
