Abstract

A golf club with a multi-material face is disclosed herein. More specifically, the golf club head in accordance with the present invention has a multi-material striking face portion that can be comprised out of a metallic outer layer combined with a composite mid-section, all forming a face cup construction that can be connected to an aft body. The composite portion of the multi-material face disclosed in accordance with the present invention may generally have an inter laminar shear strength of greater than about 60 MPa, most preferably greater than about 60 MPa and less than about 145 MPa.

Claims (30)

1. A golf club head comprising:

a hollow unitary shell, made out of a first material having a first density, forming at least one opening near a frontal portion of said golf club head;

a striking face portion at said frontal portion of said golf club head, and

a face backing layer, made out of a second material having a second density, located at an internal back surface of said striking face;

wherein said second density is lower than said first density,

wherein said striking face portion further comprises an upper hosel portion and a lower cutout portion,

wherein said face backing layer further comprises an upper cutout portion and a lower hosel portion, and

wherein said upper hosel portion located on said striking face portion combine with said lower hosel portion located on said face backing layer to form a shaft retention system.

2. The golf club head of claim 1 , wherein said striking face portion only forms said upper hosel portion of said shaft retention system.

3. The golf club head of claim 2 , wherein said face backing layer only forms said lower hosel portion of said shaft retention system.

4. The golf club head of claim 3 , wherein said striking face portion has a thickness of between about 0.25 mm and about 3.00 mm.

5. The golf club head of claim 4 , wherein said striking face portion has a thickness of between about 0.25 mm to about 1.00 mm.

6. The golf club head of claim 5 , wherein said striking face portion has a thickness of between about 0.25 mm to about 0.45 mm.

7. The golf club head of claim 6 , wherein said face backing layer has a thickness of between about 0.5 mm to about 4.00 mm.

8. The golf club head of claim 3 , wherein said face backing layer separates said striking face portion from said hollow unitary shell, such that no part of said striking face portion comes in contact with said hollow unitary shell.

9. A golf club head comprising:

a hollow unitary shell, made out of a first material having a first density, forming at least one opening near a frontal portion of said golf club head;

a striking face portion at said frontal portion of said golf club head, and

a face backing layer, made out of a second material having a second density, located at an internal back surface of said striking face;

wherein said striking face portion further comprises an upper hosel portion and a lower cutout portion,

wherein said face backing layer further comprises an upper cutout portion and a lower hosel portion, and

wherein only said upper hosel portion and said lower hosel portion are used to form a shaft retention system.

10. The golf club head of claim 9 , wherein said striking face portion has a thickness of between about 0.25 mm and about 3.00 mm.

11. The golf club head of claim 10 , wherein said striking face portion has a thickness of between about 0.25 mm to about 1.00 mm.

12. The golf club head of claim 11 , wherein said striking face portion has a thickness of between about 0.25 mm to about 0.45 mm.

13. The golf club head of claim 9 , wherein said face backing layer further comprises an extension, allowing said face backing layer to bend away from said frontal portion of said golf club head.

14. The golf club head of claim 13 , wherein said extension forms crown transition angle α of greater than about 90°,

said crown transition angle α is defined as an angle formed between a loft angle θ of said golf club head passing through a face center and a peak height of said extension of said face backing layer at a distance of exactly 10 mm rearward of said face center.

15. The golf club head of claim 14 , wherein said crown transition angle α is greater than about 110°.

16. The golf club head of claim 15 , wherein said crown transition angle α is between about 110° and about 150°.
