Abstract

An encoded bitstream of data including a plurality of encoded pictures is received. It is determined whether a first instantaneous decoding refresh (IDR) picture has one or more subsequent leading pictures included in the plurality of encoded pictures based on a Network Access Layer (NAL) unit type associated with the first IDR picture. The first IDR picture occurs at a random-access point in the encoded bitstream of data. When the NAL unit type of the first IDR picture is a first value indicating that the first IDR picture has one or more subsequent leading pictures, (i) the one or more subsequent leading pictures are decoded with reference to the first IDR picture based on the NAL unit type of the first IDR picture being the first value, and (ii) an output order is generated for the first IDR picture and the one or more subsequent leading pictures such that the one or more subsequent leading pictures precede the first IDR picture in the output order.

Claims (26)

1. A device comprising:

at least one processor;

at least one memory including computer program code, the at least one memory and the computer program code configured to, working with the at least one processor, cause the device to:

receive an encoded bitstream of data including a plurality of encoded pictures;

determine whether or not a first instantaneous decoding refresh (IDR) picture has one or more subsequent leading pictures included in the plurality of encoded pictures based on a Network Access Layer (NAL) unit type of the first IDR picture, wherein the first IDR picture occurs at a random-access point in the encoded bitstream of data; and

when the NAL unit type of the first IDR picture is a first value indicating that the first IDR picture has one or more subsequent leading pictures,

decode the one or more subsequent leading pictures with reference to the first IDR picture based on the NAL unit type of the first IDR picture being the first value, and

generate an output order for the first IDR picture and the one or more subsequent leading pictures such that the one or more subsequent leading pictures precede the first IDR picture in the output order, wherein the first IDR picture includes only intra-prediction slices (I-slices) that are decoded using intra-prediction only.

2. The device of claim 1 , wherein the one or more subsequent leading pictures follow the first IDR picture in a decoding order and precede the first IDR picture in the output order.

3. The device of claim 1 , wherein the at least one memory further includes computer program code configured to, working with the at least one processor, cause the device to:

when the NAL unit type of the first IDR picture is a second value indicating that the first DR picture does not have any subsequent leading pictures, the second value being different from the first value, generate the output order for the first IDR picture such that the first IDR picture precedes any subsequent pictures in the output order.

4. The device of claim 3 , wherein, when the NAL unit type of the first IDR picture is the second value indicating that the first IDR picture does not have any subsequent leading pictures, the output order for the first IDR picture is generated in absence of decoding any subsequent leading pictures.

5. The device of claim 1 , wherein the at least one memory further includes computer program code configured to, working with the at least one processor, cause the device to:

decode, from the encoded bitstream of data, the first IDR picture and the NAL unit type of the first IDR picture.

6. A method comprising:

receiving an encoded bitstream of data including a plurality of encoded pictures;

determining whether or not a first instantaneous decoding refresh (IDR) picture has one or more subsequent leading pictures included in the plurality of encoded pictures based on a Network Access Layer (NAL) unit type of the first DR picture, wherein the first DR picture occurs at a random-access point in the encoded bitstream of data; and

when the NAL unit type of the first DR picture is a first value indicating that the first IDR picture has one or more subsequent leading pictures,

decoding the one or more subsequent leading pictures with reference to the first IDR picture based on the NAL unit type of the first IDR picture being the first value, and

generating an output order for the first IDR picture and the one or more subsequent leading pictures such that the one or more subsequent leading pictures precede the first IDR picture in the output order, wherein the first IDR picture includes only intra-prediction slices (I-slices) that are decoded using intra-prediction only.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the one or more subsequent leading pictures follow the first IDR picture in a decoding order and precede the first IDR picture in the output order.

8. The method of claim 6 , further comprising:

when the NAL unit type of the first IDR picture is a second value indicating that the first DR picture does not have any subsequent leading pictures, the second value being different from the first value, generating the output order for the first IDR picture such that the first IDR picture precedes any subsequent pictures in the output order.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein, when the NAL unit type of the first DR picture is the second value indicating that the first IDR picture does not have any subsequent leading pictures, the output order for the first IDR picture is generated in absence of decoding any subsequent leading pictures.

10. The method of claim 6 , further comprising:

decoding, from the encoded bitstream of data, the first IDR picture and the NAL unit type of the first IDR picture.
