Abstract

Disclosed herein are various systems, methods, and processes for sharing a storage device with multiple virtual machines. A pseudo-identity is created for a storage device. Information in a hypervisor is configured to modify a response to a command issued to the storage device by a virtual machine. Physical characteristics of the storage device are determined and it is also determined whether the physical characteristics are acceptable. If the physical characteristics are acceptable, a virtual disk associated with the virtual machine is used. If the physical characteristics are unacceptable, a mapping of the virtual machine is migrated to another storage device.

Claims (76)

1. A computer-implemented method comprising:

creating a pseudo-identity for a physical storage device, wherein

the pseudo-identity facilitates

access to the physical storage device by a virtual machine of a plurality of virtual machines associated with a hypervisor, and

presentation of one or more physical characteristics of the physical storage device to the virtual machine;

configuring information in the hypervisor to modify a response to a command issued to the physical storage device by the virtual machine;

determining one or more physical characteristics of the physical storage device;

determining whether the one or more physical characteristics are acceptable;

if the one or more physical characteristics are acceptable, using a virtual disk associated with the virtual machine; and

if the one or more physical characteristics are unacceptable, migrating a mapping of the virtual machine to another storage device.

2. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising;

configuring the pseudo-identity of the physical storage device presented to a plurality of virtual machines to be held constant; and

assigning a portion of address space of the physical storage device to the virtual machine of the plurality of virtual machines.

3. The computer-implemented method of claim 2 , wherein

the mapping is a physical-to-virtual mapping,

the physical-to-virtual mapping is held constant by the hypervisor, and

the physical-to-virtual mapping is presented to the plurality of virtual machines.

4. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein

the one or more physical characteristics of the physical storage device comprise determining whether the physical storage device can store data permanently, a manner by which a computing device associated with the virtual machine locates data in the physical storage device, or whether the physical storage device needs constant electric power to store the data.

5. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein

the command is a read-capacity command or a Small Computer System Interface (SCSI) inquiry command.

6. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein

determining whether the one or more physical characteristics are acceptable comprises

determining a safe operating temperature, an amount of free space for additional storage operations, whether a cleanup activity that has been completed, or whether a wear-leveling operation has been implemented.

7. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein

modifying the response to the command comprises transmitting the one or more physical characteristics of the physical storage device to the virtual machine accessing a virtual storage device that represents the physical storage device.

8. A system comprising:

one or more processors; and

a memory coupled to the one or more processors, wherein the memory stores program instructions executable by the one or more processors to:

create a pseudo-identity for a physical storage device, wherein

the pseudo-identity facilitates

access to the physical storage device by a virtual machine of a plurality of virtual machines associated with a hypervisor, and

presentation of the one or more physical characteristics of physical storage device to the virtual machine;

configure information in the hypervisor to modify a response to a command issued to the physical storage device by the virtual machine;

determine one or more physical characteristics of physical storage device;

determine whether the one or more physical characteristics are acceptable;

if the one or more physical characteristics are acceptable, use a virtual disk associated with the virtual machine; and

if the one or more physical characteristics are unacceptable, migrate a mapping of the virtual machine to another storage device.

9. The system of claim 8 , further comprising;

configuring the pseudo-identity of the physical storage device presented to a plurality of virtual machines to be held constant; and

assigning a portion of address space of the physical storage device to the virtual machine of the plurality of virtual machines.

10. The system of claim 8 , wherein

the one or more physical characteristics of the physical storage device comprise determining whether the physical storage device can store data permanently, a manner by which a computing device associated with the virtual machine locates data in the physical storage device, or whether the physical storage device needs constant electric power to store the data.

11. The system of claim 8 , wherein

the command is a read-capacity command or a Small Computer System Interface (SCSI) inquiry command.

12. The system of claim 8 , wherein

determining whether the one or more physical characteristics are acceptable comprises

determining a safe operating temperature, an amount of free space for additional storage operations, whether a cleanup activity that has been completed, or whether a wear-leveling operation has been implemented.

13. The system of claim 8 , wherein

modifying the response to the command comprises transmitting the one or more physical characteristics of the physical storage device to the virtual machine accessing a virtual storage device that represents the physical storage device.

14. A non-transitory computer readable storage medium comprising program instructions executable to:

create a pseudo-identity for a physical storage device, wherein

the pseudo-identity facilitates

access to the physical storage device by a virtual machine of a plurality of virtual machines associated with a hypervisor, and

presentation of one or more physical characteristics of the physical storage device to the virtual machine;

configure information in the hypervisor to modify a response to a command issued to the physical storage device by the virtual machine;

determine one or more physical characteristics of the physical storage device;

determine whether the one or more physical characteristics are acceptable;

if the one or more physical characteristics are acceptable, use a virtual disk associated with the virtual machine; and

if the one or more physical characteristics are unacceptable, migrate a mapping of the virtual machine to another storage device.

15. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 14 , further comprising;

configuring the pseudo-identity of the physical storage device presented to a plurality of virtual machines to be held constant; and

assigning a portion of address space of the physical storage device to the virtual machine of the plurality of virtual machines.

16. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 14 , wherein

the one or more physical characteristics of the physical storage device comprise determining whether the physical storage device can store data permanently, a manner by which a computing device associated with the virtual machine locates data in the physical storage device, or whether the physical storage device needs constant electric power to store the data.

17. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 14 , wherein

the command is a read-capacity command or a Small Computer System Interface (SCSI) inquiry command.

18. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 14 , wherein

determining whether the one or more physical characteristics are acceptable comprises

determining a safe operating temperature, an amount of free space for additional storage operations, whether a cleanup activity that has been completed, or whether a wear-leveling operation has been implemented.

19. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 14 , wherein

modifying the response to the command comprises transmitting the one or more physical characteristics of the physical storage device to the virtual machine accessing a virtual storage device that represents the physical storage device.

20. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 15 , wherein

the mapping is a physical-to-virtual mapping,

the physical-to-virtual mapping is held constant by the hypervisor, and

the physical-to-virtual mapping is presented to the plurality of virtual machines.
