Abstract

Methods, systems, and apparatus, including computer programs encoded on computer storage media, for generating geofences. One of the methods includes receiving, at a mobile device, a signal emitted by a merchant device associated with a merchant. If the signal is emitted by a merchant device associated with a merchant and the distance between the mobile device and the merchant device satisfies a threshold, a notification is provided on the mobile device indicating proximity of the merchant associated with the merchant device.

Claims (46)

1. A computer-implemented method comprising:

obtaining, by a mobile device, location information for a plurality of devices;

determining, by the mobile device, a subset of the plurality of devices;

determining, by the mobile device, an initial geofence that encloses a geographic region encompassing locations of the subset of the plurality of devices;

determining a respective local geofence for each device of the subset,

performing one of:

generating, by the mobile device, an inclusive geofence encompassing the locations of the plurality of devices in the subset when a size of the initial geofence is less than a threshold; or

modifying, by the mobile device, a size of the respective local geofence around each device in the subset when the size of the initial geofence is equal to or greater than the threshold, to yield a plurality of modified geofences; and

displaying, by the mobile device, a notification indicative of proximity of the mobile device to one or more devices of the subset based on detection of the mobile device in one of the inclusive geofence or any one of the plurality of modified geofences.

2. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the subset of the plurality of devices includes N−1 of the plurality of devices closest to a geographical location of the mobile device, wherein N is an integer representing a total number of the plurality of devices.

3. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the threshold is a ratio of a radius of the initial geofence to a ratio of the respective local geofence associated with each device in the subset.

4. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the modifying includes enlarging each respective local geofence to have a radius that is proportional to a radius of the initial geofence.

5. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein

comparing the size of the initial geofence to the threshold includes determining a number of devices in the subset;

the inclusive geofence is generated when the number of devices in the subset is more than the threshold; and

each of the plurality of modified geofences is generated when then number of devices in the subset is less than the threshold.

6. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the devices are merchant devices and the mobile device is a user device.

7. A device comprising:

memory having computer-readable instructions stored therein; and

one or more processors configured to execute the computer-readable instructions to,

obtain location information for a plurality of merchant devices;

determine a subset of the plurality of merchant devices;

determine an initial geofence that encloses a geographic region encompassing locations of the subset of the plurality of merchant devices;

determine a respective local geofence for each merchant device of the subset;

generate one or more geofences that is one of,

an inclusive geofence encompassing a location of each merchant device in the subset when a size of the initial geofence is less than a threshold; or

a respective modified geofence around the location of each merchant device in the subset by modifying a size of the respective local geofence for each merchant device of the subset when the size of the initial geofence is equal to or greater than the threshold; and

display a notification on the device indicative of proximity of the device to one or more merchant devices of the subset based on detection of the device in one of the inclusive geofence or any respective modified geofence.

8. The device of claim 7 , wherein the threshold is a ratio of a radius of the initial geofence to a ratio of each local geofence in the subset.

9. The device of claim 7 , wherein the modifying includes enlarging each respective local geofence to have a radius that is proportional to a radius of the initial geofence.

10. The device of claim 7 , wherein

comparing the size of the initial geofence to the threshold includes determining a number of merchant devices in the subset;

the inclusive geofence is generated when the number of merchant devices in the subset is more than the threshold; and

each respective modified geofence is generated when then number of merchant devices in the subset is less than the threshold.

11. A non-transitory computer-readable medium having computer-readable instructions, which when executed by one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to,

obtain location information for a plurality of first devices;

determine a subset of the plurality of first devices;

determine a initial geofence that encloses a geographic region encompassing locations of the subset of the plurality of first devices;

determine a respective local geofence for each first device of the subset;

determine if the initial geofence satisfies a condition;

generate an inclusive geofence encompassing the locations of the plurality of first devices in the subset, if the initial geofence does not satisfy the condition;

modify the respective local geofence for each first device in the subset if the initial geofence satisfies the condition; and

display a notification on a second device indicative of proximity of the second device to one or more of the plurality of first devices based on detection of the second device in one of the inclusive geofence or any respective modified local geofence.

12. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 11 , wherein the condition is at least one of:

a number of first devices in the subset being less than a predetermined number; and

a ratio of a radius of the initial geofence being equal to or greater than a radius of the respective local geofence around each first device in the subset.
