Abstract

A golf club incorporating an interchangeable shaft system includes a shaft, a shaft sleeve, a club head. The shaft sleeve is coupled to an end of the shaft and is received in a hosel included in the club head. The shaft sleeve is removably coupled to the club head. Hosel and shaft sleeve alignment features provide discrete orientations between the shaft and club head.

Claims (37)

1. A golf club, comprising:

a golf club head;

an elongate shaft; and

an interchangeable shaft system releasably coupling the shaft to the club head, the interchangeable shaft system comprising a wedge member, a shaft sleeve and a hosel ring, wherein the wedge member and the hosel ring are interposed between a portion of the shaft sleeve and a hosel of the golf club head,

wherein the wedge member includes end surfaces angled relative to each other to define a wedge angle β,

wherein the shaft sleeve includes a sleeve body defining a longitudinal axis and a shaft bore, wherein the shaft bore defines a longitudinal axis that is angled relative to the longitudinal axis of the sleeve body by a shaft angle α so the shaft bore is not coaxial with the sleeve body;

wherein the hosel ring includes end surfaces that are angled relative to each other to define a hosel ring angle γ, and

wherein the interchangeable shaft system is configured to provide a plurality of coupling positions with each position producing a specific combination of a loft angle orientation and a lie angle orientation.

2. The golf club of claim 1 , wherein the shaft sleeve is constructed to have four selectable orientations relative to the wedge member.

3. The golf club of claim 1 , wherein the wedge member is constructed to have four selectable orientations relative to the hosel ring.

4. The golf club of claim 1 , wherein the hosel ring is constructed to have two selectable orientations relative to the hosel.

5. The golf club of claim 4 , wherein a proximal end of the hosel includes a pair of diametrically opposed notches, and a distal end of the hosel ring includes a pair of diametrically opposed tangs that engage the notches of the proximal end of the hosel.

6. The golf club of claim 1 , wherein the interchangeable shaft system further comprises a retainer that retains the wedge member and the hosel ring slidably coupled to the shaft sleeve when the shaft sleeve, the wedge member and the hosel ring are separate from the golf club head.

The golf club of claim 1 , wherein the hosel defines a hosel bore having a longitudinal axis and a proximal end surface of the hosel is angled relative to a plane that is perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the hosel bore by a hosel angle μ, wherein a magnitude of the hosel angle μ and a magnitude of the hosel ring angle γ are equal.

8. The golf club of claim 7 , wherein in a first selectable orientation of the hosel ring relative to the hosel, the hosel and the hosel ring are oriented so that the hosel angle μ and the hosel ring angle γ cancel.

The golf club of claim 1 , wherein the hosel defines a hosel bore having a longitudinal axis and a proximal end surface of the hosel is angled relative to a plane that is perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the hosel bore by a hosel angle μ, wherein a magnitude of the hosel angle μ and a magnitude of the hosel ring angle γ are different.

10. The golf club of claim 1 , wherein the hosel ring angle γ is 2°.

11. The golf club of claim 1 , wherein the hosel defines a hosel bore having a longitudinal axis and a proximal end surface of the hosel is angled relative to a plane that is perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the hosel bore by a hosel angle μ, wherein the hosel angle μ is 2°.

12. The golf club of claim 1 , wherein the hosel defines a hosel bore having a longitudinal axis and a proximal end surface of the hosel is angled relative to a plane that is perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the hosel bore by a hosel angle μ, wherein the hosel angle μ is ½°.

13. The golf club of claim 1 , wherein the hosel ring angle γ is ½°.

14. The golf club of claim 1 , wherein the hosel defines a hosel bore having a longitudinal axis and a proximal end surface of the hosel is angled relative to a plane that is perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the hosel bore by a hosel angle μ, and wherein in a configuration of the hosel and the hosel ring, the hosel angle μ and the hosel ring angle γ are selected so that they are additive in a lie plane so that the lie angle is increased by ½°.

15. A golf club, comprising:

a golf club head;

an elongate shaft; and

an interchangeable shaft system releasably coupling the shaft to the club head, the interchangeable shaft system comprising a wedge member, a shaft sleeve and a hosel ring, wherein the wedge member and the hosel ring are interposed between a portion of the shaft sleeve and a hosel of the golf club head,

wherein the wedge member includes end surfaces angled relative to each other to define a wedge angle β,

wherein the shaft sleeve includes a sleeve body defining a longitudinal axis and a shaft bore, wherein the shaft bore defines a longitudinal axis that is angled relative to the longitudinal axis of the sleeve body by a shaft angle α so the shaft bore is not coaxial with the sleeve body;

wherein the hosel ring includes end surfaces that are angled relative to each other to define a hosel ring angle γ,

wherein the interchangeable shaft system is configured to provide a plurality of coupling positions with each position producing a specific combination of a loft angle orientation and a lie angle orientation,

wherein the shaft sleeve is constructed to have four selectable orientations relative to the wedge member,

wherein the wedge member is constructed to have four selectable orientations relative to the hosel ring, and

wherein the hosel ring is constructed to have two selectable orientations relative to the hosel.

16. The golf club of claim 15 , wherein a proximal end of the hosel includes a pair of diametrically opposed notches, and a distal end of the hosel ring includes a pair of diametrically opposed tangs that engage the notches of the proximal end of the hosel.

17. The golf club of claim 15 , wherein the interchangeable shaft system further comprises a retainer that retains the wedge member and the hosel ring slidably coupled to the shaft sleeve when the shaft sleeve, the wedge member and the hosel ring are separate from the golf club head.

The golf club of claim 15 , wherein the hosel defines a hosel bore having a longitudinal axis and a proximal end surface of the hosel is angled relative to a plane that is perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the hosel bore by a hosel angle μ, wherein a magnitude of the hosel angle μ and a magnitude of the hosel ring angle γ are equal.

The golf club of claim 15 , wherein the hosel defines a hosel bore having a longitudinal axis and a proximal end surface of the hosel is angled relative to a plane that is perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the hosel bore by a hosel angle μ, wherein a magnitude of the hosel angle μ and a magnitude of the hosel ring angle γ are different.

20. The golf club of claim 15 , wherein the hosel defines a hosel bore having a longitudinal axis and a proximal end surface of the hosel is angled relative to a plane that is perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the hosel bore by a hosel angle μ, wherein the hosel angle μ is 2°.
