Abstract

An electronic control system comprises a first tubular handling tool, a sensor, and a controller. The controller is configured to control actuation of the first tubular handling tool in response to an electronic signal received from the sensor that corresponds to an operational characteristic of the first tubular handling tool. The electronic control system functions as an electronic interlock system to prevent mishandling of a tubular. A method of controlling a tubular handling tool comprises measuring an operational characteristic of the tubular handling tool, communicating the operational characteristic to a controller in the form of an electronic signal, and using the controller to control actuation of the tubular handling tool in response to the measured operational characteristic.

Claims (24)

1. A tubular handling system, comprising:

a gripping assembly configured to actuate one or more gripping tools to grip a tubular for a thread makeup with a tubular string, wherein the gripping assembly includes at least one first piston/cylinder assembly;

a compensation assembly having at least one second piston/cylinder assembly, wherein the compensation assembly is actuatable to move the gripping assembly to compensate for the thread makeup between the tubular and the tubular string;

an electronic control system; and

a first sensor configured to measure an amount of stroke of the at least one second piston/cylinder assembly, the first sensor configured to transmit a signal to the electronic control system corresponding to the amount of stroke, wherein the electronic control system is configured to actuate the compensation assembly based on the amount of stroke.

2. The tubular handling system of claim 1 , wherein the first sensor comprises an indicator that is configured to engage a groove or recess formed in a shaft of the at least one second piston/cylinder assembly to measure the amount of stroke of the at least one second piston/cylinder assembly.

3. The tubular handling system of claim 2 , wherein the electric control system is configured to actuate a valve that controls fluid communication to the at last one second piston/cylinder assembly to actuate the compensation assembly based on the amount of stroke.

4. The tubular handling system of claim 1 , further comprising a drive shaft and a load measuring device in communication with the electric control system, wherein the load measuring device is configured to measure a load on the drive shaft during operation of the tubular handling system.

5. The tubular handling system of claim 4 , wherein the electric control system is configured to actuate a valve that controls fluid communication to the at least one second piston/cylinder assembly to actuate the compensation assembly based on the amount of stroke and/or the load.

6. The tubular handling system of claim 4 , wherein the load measuring device is at least one of a torque sub, a strain gauge, or a load cell.

7. The tubular handling system of claim 1 , further comprising a second sensor measuring a pressure within a fluid line to the at least one second piston/cylinder assembly.

8. The tubular handling system of claim 1 , further comprising a bail assembly to grip and position the tubular.

9. A method of controlling a tubular handling tool having a compensation assembly and a gripping tool, comprising:

gripping a tubular using the gripping tool, wherein the gripping tool is configured to makeup the tubular with a tubular string, wherein a gripping assembly including one or more first piston/cylinder assemblies is operable to actuate the gripping tool;

receiving an electronic signal from a sensor corresponding to an amount of stroke of at least one second piston/cylinder assembly configured to actuate the compensation assembly; and

actuating a valve that controls fluid communication to the at least one second piston/cylinder assembly based on the amount of stroke to cause the compensation assembly to move the gripping tool to compensate for a makeup distance between the tubular and the tubular string.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the tubular handling tool further includes a bail assembly, wherein the bail assembly positions the tubular above the tubular string prior to gripping the tubular with the gripping tool.

11. The method of claim 9 , wherein the at least one second piston/cylinder assembly actuates automatically.

12. The method of claim 9 , further comprising monitoring the amount of stroke of the at least one second piston/cylinder assembly to ensure that the at least one second piston/cylinder assembly is not fully extended prior to the completion of the makeup between the tubular and the tubular string.

13. The method of claim 9 , further comprising a drive shaft and a load measuring device, and monitoring the load measuring device to monitor the load on the drive shaft.

14. The method of claim 13 , further comprising actuating the compensation assembly based on the load.

15. The method of claim 9 , wherein the sensor comprises an indicator that is configured to engage a groove or recess formed in a shaft of the at least one second piston/cylinder assembly to measure the amount of stroke of the at least one second piston/cylinder assembly.

16. The method of claim 9 , further comprising:

receiving an electric signal from the sensor indicating that the compensation assembly is in a proper position for actuating the compensation assembly.
