Abstract

Excess fuel consumption monitor and feedback systems for vehicles include sensor arrays of two primary types including those sensors deployed as part of a vehicle manufacturer established sensor suite and sensors deployed as after-market sensors. Together, these sensor suites include sensors coupled to vehicle subsystems and operating environments associated with the vehicle. Data from these sensors may be used as parametric inputs to drive algorithmic calculations which have outputs that express excess fuel consumption. Expressions of excess fuel consumption may be made instantaneously as real-time feedback to a vehicle operator/driver and/or a fleet manager as part of a summary report.

detect a first vehicle maneuver based on one or more first vehicle parameters related to operation of the first vehicle, wherein the first detected vehicle maneuver includes one or more of hard acceleration, hard braking, driving at a constant speed in a suboptimal gear, speeding beyond an optimal top speed, idling unnecessarily, hard cornering, over revving the engine of the first vehicle, inefficiently shifting gears, inefficient acceleration, inefficient braking, inefficient operation of the first vehicle given prevailing driving conditions, and/or speeding uphill;

determine actual fuel consumption by the first vehicle during the first detected vehicle maneuver;

detect a first consumption difference, wherein the first consumption difference is detected based on a difference between a first actual fuel consumption amount and a first target fuel consumption amount, wherein the first actual fuel consumption amount is based on the actual fuel consumption by the first vehicle during the first detected vehicle maneuver, wherein the first target fuel consumption amount is based on an estimation of a first amount of fuel that would have been consumed by the first vehicle at the time of the first detected vehicle maneuver if the first vehicle had been operated so as to prevent excessive fuel consumption; and

effectuate presentation of the first consumption difference to the first driver via the user interface.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more processors are further configured to:

detect a second consumption difference for the first vehicle, wherein the second consumption difference is detected based on a second difference between a second actual fuel consumption amount and a second target fuel consumption amount, wherein the second actual fuel consumption amount is based on actual fuel consumption by the first vehicle during a second detected vehicle maneuver, wherein the second detected vehicle maneuver is detected based on one or more second vehicle parameters related to operation of the first vehicle, wherein the second target fuel consumption amount is based on an estimation of a second amount of fuel that would have been consumed by the first vehicle at the time of the second detected vehicle maneuver if the first vehicle had been operated so as to prevent excessive fuel consumption; and

effectuate presentation of the second consumption difference via the user interface.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the one or more processors are further configured to:

generate a report based on a comparison of the first consumption difference and the second consumption difference; and
