Abstract

Systems and methods for automatically or remotely rendering a solar array safe during an emergency or maintenance. A watchdog unit is disclosed for monitoring a signal from a central controller. If the signal is lost, interrupted, or becomes irregular, or if a shutdown signal is received, then the watchdog unit can shut down one or more solar modules. Shutting down a solar module can mean disconnecting it from a power bus of the solar array or lowering the solar module voltage to a safe level.

Claims (33)

1. A device, comprising:

a local controller in communication with a central controller,

the local controller verifying communication with the central controller by determining whether the communication with the central controller has been interrupted for a time period longer than a threshold number of allowed skips,

wherein the communication is a power line communication, and the power line communication is a signal whose modulation represents coded information; and

at least one switch coupled between a first photovoltaic module of a plurality of photovoltaic modules and a power bus,

wherein the power bus serially connects the plurality of photovoltaic modules to an inverter,

wherein the power bus includes a diode coupled in series with the power bus,

the at least one switch reducing an output voltage from the first photovoltaic module to the power bus independently of others of the plurality of photovoltaic modules in response to the local controller failing to verify the communication with the central controller for the time period longer than the threshold number of allowed skips,

wherein reducing the output voltage from the first photovoltaic module to the power bus comprises opening and closing the at least one switch at a duty cycle such that a portion of the output voltage from the first photovoltaic module is provided to the power bus,

wherein the device is configured to connect the first photovoltaic module of the plurality of photovoltaic modules to the power bus when the communication with the central controller has not been interrupted for the time period longer than the threshold number of allowed skips,

wherein the device is configured to connect the first photovoltaic module of the plurality of photovoltaic modules to the power bus when a restart signal is received;

wherein the local controller includes a bypass path for a current to go through the device without passing through the diode when the first photovoltaic module is disconnected from the power bus.

2. The device of claim 1 , wherein the local controller controls the duty cycle of the at least one switch to control the output voltage of the first photovoltaic module.

3. The device of claim 2 , wherein the least one switch disconnects the first photovoltaic module from the power bus in response to the local controller failing to verify the communication with the central controller for the time period longer than the threshold number of allowed skips.

4. The device of claim 2 , wherein the output voltage is reduced via the local controller reducing the duty cycle of the at least one switch.

5. The device of claim 1 , wherein the communication includes a challenge sent to the central controller and a response from the central controller within a threshold period of time.

6. The device of claim 1 , wherein the local controller is capable of receiving a shutdown signal from the central controller in addition to detecting that the communication from the central controller has been interrupted for the time period longer than the threshold number of allowed skips.

7. A photovoltaic module, comprising:

a plurality of photovoltaic cells;

a local controller; and

at least one switch coupled between the photovoltaic module and an output of the photovoltaic module,

wherein the output of the photovoltaic module is configured to be serially connected to a power bus,

wherein the power bus includes a diode coupled in series with the power bus,

wherein the local controller controlling a duty cycle of the least one switch to adjust a voltage of the output of the photovoltaic module, the local controller verifying communication with a central controller by determining whether the communication with the central controller has been interrupted for a time period longer than a threshold number of allowed skips,

wherein the communication is a power line communication, and the power line communication is a signal whose modulation represents coded information;

the at least one switch reducing the voltage of the output of the photovoltaic module independently of the power bus in response to the local controller failing to verify the communication with the central controller for the time period longer than the threshold number of allowed skips,

wherein reducing the output voltage from the photovoltaic module to the power bus comprises opening and closing the at least one switch at a particular duty cycle such that a portion of the output voltage from the photovoltaic module is provided to the power bus,

wherein the local controller is configured to connect the photovoltaic module to the power bus when a restart signal is received,

wherein the local controller includes a bypass path for a current to go through the local controller without passing through the diode when the photovoltaic module is disconnected from the power bus.

8. The photovoltaic module of claim 7 , wherein the least one switch disconnects the plurality of photovoltaic cells from the output of the photovoltaic module in response to the local controller failing to verify the communication with the central controller for the time period longer than the threshold number of allowed skips.

9. The photovoltaic module of claim 7 , wherein the communication includes a challenge sent to the central controller and a response from the central controller within a threshold period of time.

10. The photovoltaic module of claim 7 , wherein the local controller is capable of receiving a shutdown signal from the central controller in addition to detecting that the communication from the central controller has been interrupted for the time period longer than the threshold number of allowed skips.

11. The photovoltaic module of claim 7 , wherein the local controller reduces the duty cycle of the at least one switch to reduce the voltage of the output of the photovoltaic module.
