Abstract

A first communication device generates one or more wakeup frames for transmission to one or more second communication devices, and generates a wakeup packet to include the one or more wakeup frames for transmission in respective ones of one or more particular wakeup radio (WUR) operating channels of respective ones of the one or more second communication devices. The respective one or more WUR operating channels are determined by previous negotiation between the first communication device and respective ones of the one or more second communication devices. The first communication device transmits the wakeup packet to the one or more second communication devices, with respective ones of the one or more wakeup frames transmitted in respective ones of the one or more particular WUR operating channels to prompt the respective ones of the one or more second communication devices to transition from a low power state to an active state.

transmitting, by the first communication device, the wakeup packet to prompt respective one or more second communication devices, among the multiple second communication devices, to transition from a low power state to an active state, including, prior to transmission of the wakeup packet, puncturing a portion of the wakeup packet, the portion corresponding to a component channel, among a plurality of component channels of an operating channel of the first communication device, that is determined by the first communication device to be busy.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising negotiating a particular WUR operating channel with a particular second communication device among the multiple second communication devices, including

receiving, at the first communication device from the particular second communication device, a request frame that includes a WUR operating channel element including an indication that the particular WUR operating channel is requested by the particular second communication device, and

transmitting, from the first communication device to the particular second communication device, a response frame that includes an indication that the particular second communication device is permitted to operate in the particular WUR operating channel requested by the particular second communication device.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein

the respective WUR operating channels of respective ones of the multiple second communication devices correspond to respective component channels of the operating channel of the first communication device.

4. The method of claim 3 , further comprising, prior to transmitting the wakeup packet,

selecting a particular component channel of the operating channel of the first communication device, the particular component channel corresponding to a particular WUR operating channel of a particular one of the multiple second communication devices,

performing a backoff procedure in the selected component channel to determine when the selected component channel is idle,

after determining that the selected component channel is idle, determining whether one or more other component channels corresponding to respective WUR operating channels one or more other second communication devices of the multiple second communication devices are idle or busy, and

transmitting the wakeup packet in the selected component channel and one or more other component channels that are determined to be idle.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein generating the wakeup packet includes modulating respective ones of the multiple wakeup frames for transmission to respective ones of the multiple second communication devices, including i) modulating a first wakeup frame for transmission to a first one of the multiple second communication devices according to a first modulation and coding scheme (MCS) and ii modulating a second wakeup frame for transmission to a second one of the multiple second communication devices according to a second MCS different from the first MCS.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein generating the wakeup packet includes padding at least one of the multiple wakeup frames to equalize lengths of the multiple wakeup frames.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising transmitting, from the first communication device, a beacon frame for synchronizing with wakeup radios of the multiple second communication devices, the beacon frame being duplicated in respective component channels of the operating channel of the first communication device corresponding to the respective WUR operating channels of the multiple second communication devices.

8. An apparatus, comprising:

a network interface device associated with a first communication device, wherein the network interface device includes one or more integrated circuits (ICs) configured to:

generate multiple wakeup frames, respective ones of the multiple wakeup frames for transmission to respective ones of multiple second communication devices,

generate a wakeup packet to include the multiple wakeup frames for transmission in respective particular wakeup radio (WUR) operating channels of respective ones of the multiple second communication devices, the respective WUR operating channels determined by previous negotiation between the first communication device and respective ones of the multiple second communication devices, and

transmit in the wakeup packet to prompt respective ones of the second communication devices, among the multiple second communication devices, to transition from a low power state to an active state, including, prior to transmission of the wakeup packet, puncturing a portion of the wakeup packet, the portion corresponding to a component channel, among a plurality of component channels of an operating channel of the first communication device, that is determined by the first communication device to be busy.

9. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the one or more IC devices are further configured to negotiate a particular WUR operating channel with a particular second communication device among the multiple second communication devices, the one or more IC devices being configured to:

receive a request frame from the particular second communication device, the request frame including a WUR operating channel element that includes an indication that the particular WUR operating channel is requested by the particular second communication device, and

transmit a response frame to the particular second communication device, the response frame including an indication that the particular second communication device is permitted to operate in the particular WUR operating channel requested by particular the second communication device.

10. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein

the respective WUR operating channels of respective ones of the multiple second communication devices correspond to respective component channels of the operating channel of the first communication device.

11. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the one or more IC devices are configured to, prior to transmitting the wakeup packet:

select a particular component channel of the operating channel of the first communication device, the particular component channel corresponding to a particular WUR operating channel of a particular one of the multiple second communication devices,

perform a backoff procedure in the selected component channel to determine when the selected component channel is idle,

after determining that the selected component channel is idle, determine whether one or more other component channels corresponding to respective WUR operating channels one or more other second communication devices of the multiple second communication devices are idle or busy, and

transmit the wakeup packet in the selected component channel and one or more other component channels that are determined to be idle.

12. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the one or more IC devices are configured to modulate respective ones of the multiple wakeup frames for transmission to respective ones of the multiple second communication devices, including i) modulating a first wakeup frame for transmission to a first one of the multiple second communication devices according to a first modulation and coding scheme (MCS) and a) modulating a second wakeup frame for transmission to a second one of the multiple second communication devices according to a second MCS different from the first MCS.
