Abstract

Methods, systems, and computer readable media can be operable to facilitate a testing of an unknown USB supply that is connected to a CPE (customer premise equipment) device to determine a current draw capacity of the USB supply. The CPE device may test the USB supply to determine whether the USB supply is capable of supplying a predetermined current. If the determination is made that the USB supply is not able to supply the predetermined current, an end-user may be instructed to plug an alternative PSU (power supply unit) into the CPE device, wherein the alternative PSU is capable of supplying the predetermined current to the CPE device. The CPE device may output an indication that an alternative PSU should be used via a graphics output to a display device through an HDMI (high-definition multimedia interface) connection or via an LED indication using one or more LEDs at the CPE device.

Claims (50)

1. A method comprising:

providing a customer premise equipment device having an input/output device configured to send communications to, and receive communications from one or more networks during normal operation using current supplied by a universal serial bus (USB) port of a display device;

upon connecting the customer premise equipment device to the USB port of the display device, initiating, at the customer premise equipment device, a pulsed current draw capacity test of a pulsed current draw by a current load source of the customer premise equipment device from a power supply of the display device provided to the customer premise equipment device through the USB port of the display device to test a capacity of the power supply of the display device to supply a predetermined current through the USB port of the display device to the customer premise equipment device needed by the customer premise equipment device during normal operation of the customer premise equipment device;

pulsing, by the current load source of the customer premise equipment device, a predetermined current load to apply a pulsed current load, at a duration to prevent an overcurrent trip from fully activating, to the power supply of the display device providing power to the customer premise equipment device through the USB port of the display device during the pulsed current draw capacity test to test the capacity of the power supply of the display device to provide the predetermined current from the USB port of the display device to the customer premise equipment device during normal operation of the customer premise equipment device, the pulsed current load is generated by the current load source of the customer premise equipment device by periodically removing the predetermined current load, wherein the current load source of the customer premise equipment device progressively increases the pulsed current draw from the power supply of the display device by the customer premise equipment device by adding more functions in a controlled manner to generate the pulsed current load applied by current load source of the customer premise equipment device to the power supply of the display device;

determining whether the power supply of the display device is capable of supporting the pulsed current load applied by the current load source of the customer premise equipment device to the power supply of the display device through the USB port of the display device to provide the predetermined current to the customer premise equipment device during the normal operation of the customer premise equipment device; and

outputting, by the customer premise equipment device, a notification to the display device when the determination is made that the power supply of the display device is not capable of supporting the pulsed current load applied by the current load source of the customer premise equipment device to the power supply of the display device through the USB port of the display device to provide the predetermined current from the power supply of the display device to the customer premise equipment device during the pulsed current draw capacity test, wherein the notification includes an instruction presented on the display device to plug an alternative power supply into the customer premise equipment device.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the pulsed current load is incrementally increased in stages.

The method of claim 2 , wherein determining whether the power supply of the display device is capable of supporting the pulsed current load applied by the customer premise equipment device to the power supply of the display device through the USB port to provide the predetermined current to the customer premise equipment device during the normal operation of the customer premise equipment device comprises:

reading a voltage value at a power monitor of the customer premise equipment device after each increase of the pulsed current load applied by the current load source of the customer premise equipment device to the power supply of the display device through the USB port of the display device; and

determining that the power supply of the display device is not capable of supporting the pulsed current load applied by the current load source of the customer premise equipment device to the power supply of the display device through the USB port to provide the predetermined current to the customer premise equipment device when the voltage value drops below a threshold.

The method of claim 2 , wherein determining whether the power supply of the display device is capable of supporting the pulsed current load applied by the current load source of the customer premise equipment device to the power supply of the display device through the USB port to provide the predetermined current to the customer premise equipment device during the normal operation of the customer premise equipment device comprises:

monitoring an output of a brownout detector of the customer premise equipment device; and

determining that the power supply of the display device is not capable of supporting the pulsed current load applied by the current load source of the customer premise equipment device to the power supply of the display device through the USB port to provide the predetermined current to the customer premise equipment device during normal operation of the customer premise equipment device when a fault condition is flagged by the brownout detector.

The method of claim 3 , wherein determining whether the power supply of the display device is capable of supporting the pulsed current load applied by the current load source of the customer premise equipment device to the power supply of the display device though the USB port to provide the predetermined current to the customer premise equipment device during normal operation of the customer premise equipment device comprises:

monitoring an output of a brownout detector of the customer premise equipment device; and

determining that the power supply of the display device is not capable of supporting the pulsed current load applied by the current load source of the customer premise equipment device to the power supply of the display device though the USB port to provide the predetermined current to the customer premise equipment device during normal operation of the customer premise equipment device when a fault condition is flagged by the brownout detector.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the notification causes the display device to output a message instructing a user to connect the customer premise equipment device to an alternate power supply unit.

7. A customer premise equipment device comprising:

an input/output device configured to send communications to, and receive communications from one or more networks during normal operation using current supplied by a universal serial bus (USB) port of a display device, wherein the customer premise equipment device is configured to;

upon connecting the customer premise equipment device to the USB port of, initiate, at the customer premise equipment, a pulsed current draw capacity test of a pulsed current draw by a current load source of the customer premise equipment device from a power supply of the display device provided to the customer premise equipment device through the USB port of the display device to test a capacity of the power supply of the display device to supply a predetermined current through the USB port of the display device to the customer premise equipment device needed by the customer premise equipment device during normal operation of the customer premise equipment;

pulse, by the current load source of the customer premise equipment device, a predetermined current load, at a duration to prevent an overcurrent trip from fully activating, to apply a pulsed current load to the power supply of the display device providing power to the customer premise equipment device through the USB port of the display device during the pulsed current draw capacity test to test the capacity of the power supply of the display device to provide the predetermined current from the USB port of the display device to the customer premise equipment device during normal operation of the customer premise equipment, the pulsed current load is generated by the current load source of the customer premise equipment device by periodically removing the predetermined current load, wherein the current load source of the customer premise equipment device progressively increases the pulsed current draw from the power supply of the display device by the customer premise equipment device through the USB port by adding more functions in a controlled manner to generate the pulsed current load applied by the current load source of the customer premise equipment device to the power supply of the display device;

determine whether the power supply of the display device is capable of supporting the pulsed current load applied by the current load source of the customer premise equipment device to the power supply of the display device through the USB port of the display device to provide the predetermined current to the customer premise equipment device during the normal operation of the customer premise equipment device; and

output, by the customer premise equipment device, a notification to the display device when the determination is made that the power supply of the display device is not capable of supporting the pulsed current load applied by the current load source of the customer premise equipment device to the power supply of the display device through the USB port of the display device to provide the predetermined current from the power supply of the display device to the customer premise equipment device during the pulsed current draw capacity test, wherein the outputting the notification includes displaying an instruction on the display device to plug an alternative power supply into the customer premise equipment device.

The customer premise equipment device of claim 7 , wherein the pulsed current load comprises a progressive current load applied by the current load source of the customer premise equipment device to the to the power supply of the display device through the USB port of the display device to provide the predetermined current to the customer premise equipment device during normal operation of the customer premise equipment device, the amount of the pulsed current load applied by the current load source of the customer premise equipment device to the power supply port of the display device through the USB port of the display device to provide the predetermined current to the customer premise equipment device during normal operation of the customer premise equipment device is incrementally increased in stages.

The customer premise equipment device of claim 7 , wherein determining whether the power supply of the display device is capable of supporting the pulsed current load applied by the current load source of the customer premise equipment device to the power supply of the display device through the USB port of the display device to provide the predetermined current to the customer premise equipment device during normal operation of the customer premise equipment device comprises:

reading a voltage value at a power monitor of the customer premise equipment device after each increase of the pulsed current load-applied by the current load source of the customer premise equipment device to the power supply of the display device through the USB port of the display device to provide the predetermined current needed by the customer premise equipment device during normal operation of the customer premise equipment; and

determining that the power supply of the display device is not capable of supporting the pulsed current load applied by the current load source of the customer premise equipment device to the power supply of the display device through the USB port of the display device to provide the predetermined current to the customer premise equipment device during normal operation of the customer premise equipment device when the voltage value drops below a threshold.

The customer premise equipment device of claim 8 , wherein determining whether the power supply of the display device is capable of supporting the pulsed current load applied by the current load source of the customer premise equipment device to the power supply of the display device through the USB port to provide the predetermined current to the customer premise equipment device comprises:

monitoring an output of a brownout detector of the customer premise equipment device; and

determining that the power supply of the display device is not capable of supporting the pulsed current load applied by the current load source of the customer premise equipment device to the power supply of the display device through the USB port to provide the predetermined current to the customer premise equipment device when a fault condition is flagged by the brownout detector.

11. The customer premise equipment device of claim 7 , wherein determining whether the power supply of the display device is capable of supporting the pulsed current load applied by the current load source of the customer premise equipment device to the power supply of the display device through the USB port to provide the predetermined current to the customer premise equipment device comprises:

monitoring an output of a brownout detector of the customer premise equipment device; and

determining that the power supply of the display device is not capable of supporting the pulsed current load applied by the current load source of the customer premise equipment device to the power supply of the display device through the USB port to provide the predetermined current to the customer premise equipment device when a fault condition is flagged by the brownout detector.

12. One or more non-transitory computer readable media having instructions operable to cause one or more processors to perform the operations comprising:

providing a customer premise equipment device having an input/output device configured to send communications to, and receive communications from one or more networks during normal operation using current supplied by a universal serial bus (USB) port of a display device;

upon connecting the customer premise equipment device to the USB port of the display device, initiating at the customer premise equipment device, a pulsed current draw capacity test of a pulsed current draw by a current load source of the customer premise equipment device from a power supply of a display device provided to the customer premise equipment device through the USB port of the display device to test a capacity of the power supply of the display device to supply a predetermined current through the USB port of the display device to the customer premise equipment device needed by the customer premise equipment device during normal operation of the customer premise equipment;

pulsing, by the current load source of the customer premise equipment device, a predetermined current load, at a duration to prevent an overcurrent trip from fully activating, to apply a pulsed current load to the power supply of the display device providing power to the customer premise equipment device through the USB port of the display device during the pulsed current draw capacity test that is equivalent to the current draw from the display device to the customer premise equipment device to test the capacity of the power supply of the display device to provide the predetermined current from the USB port of the display device to the customer premise equipment device during normal operation of the customer premise equipment, the pulsed current load is generated by the current load source of the customer premise equipment device by periodically removing the predetermined current load, wherein the current load source of the customer premise equipment device progressively increases the pulsed current draw from the power supply of the display device by the customer premise equipment device by adding more functions in a controlled manner to generate the pulsed current load applied by the current load source of the customer premise equipment device to the power supply of the display device;

determining whether the power supply of the display device is capable of supporting the pulsed current load applied by the current load source of the customer premise equipment device to the power supply of the display device through the USB port of the display device to provide the predetermined current to the customer premise equipment device during a normal operation of the customer premise equipment device; and

outputting, by the customer premise equipment device, a notification to the display device when the determination is made that the power supply of the display device is not capable of supporting the pulsed current load applied by the current load source of the customer premise equipment device to the power supply of the display device through the USB port of the display device to provide the predetermined current from the power supply of the display device to the customer premise equipment device during the pulsed current draw capacity test, wherein the outputting the notification includes displaying an instruction on the display device to plug an alternative power supply into the customer premise equipment device.

13. The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 12 , wherein the pulsed current load is incrementally increased in stages.

The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 13 , wherein determining whether the power supply of the display device is capable of supporting the pulsed current load applied by the current load source of the customer premise equipment device to the display device through the USB port to provide the predetermined current to the customer premise equipment device during the normal operation of the customer premise equipment device comprises:

reading a voltage value at a power monitor of the customer premise equipment device after each increase of the pulsed current load applied by the current load source of the customer premise equipment device to the power supply of the display device through the USB port of the display device; and

determining that the power supply of the display device is not capable of supporting the pulsed current load applied by the current load source of the customer premise equipment device to the power supply of the display device through the USB port to provide the predetermined current to the customer premise equipment device when the voltage value drops below a threshold.

The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 13 , wherein determining whether the power supply of the display device is capable of supporting the pulsed current load applied by the current load source of the customer premise equipment device to the power supply of the display device through the USB port to provide the predetermined current to the customer premise equipment device during the normal operation of the customer premise equipment device comprises:

monitoring an output of a brownout detector of the customer premise equipment device; and

determining that the power supply of the display device is not capable of supporting the pulsed current load applied by the current load source of the customer premise equipment device to the power supply of the display device through the USB port to provide the predetermined current to the customer premise equipment device when a fault condition is flagged by the brownout detector.

The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 12 , wherein determining whether the power supply of the display device is capable of supporting the pulsed current load applied by the current load source of the customer premise equipment device to the power supply of the display device through the USB port to provide the predetermined current to the customer premise equipment device comprises:

monitoring an output of a brownout detector of the customer premise equipment device; and

determining that the power supply of the display device is not capable of supporting the pulsed current load applied by the current load source of the customer premise equipment device to the power supply of the display device through the USB port to provide the predetermined current to the customer premise equipment device when a fault condition is flagged by the brownout detector.

17. The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 12 , wherein the notification causes the display device to output a message instructing a user to connect the customer premise equipment device to an alternate power supply unit.
