Abstract

Systems and methods are described herein for sending notifications associated with different use or active modes of a mobile device, such as a smart phone, tablet, and so on. For example, a mobile device may be in a busy mode, where a user associated with the mobile device is busy on a call, and/or in an entertainment mode (or other non-communication mode), where the user is utilizing entertainment functions provided by the mobile device (e.g., watching a video, playing a video game, listening to a podcast, and so on).

Claims (57)

1. A method for use with a mobile device wirelessly communicating with a telecommunications network, the method comprising:

intercepting an indication of a communication initiated between a calling mobile device and a called mobile device;

based on a determination that the called mobile device is currently operating in a use mode of operation, providing a first notification to the calling mobile device that indicates the called mobile device is operating in the use mode of operation,

wherein the use mode of operation of the called mobile device is associated with the called mobile device facilitating a communication between the called mobile device and another mobile device different from the calling mobile device; and

after the use mode of operation of the called mobile device ends;

selecting, based on a priority, one or more calling mobile devices among a plurality of mobile devices that attempted to initiate communications with the called mobile device during the use mode of operation of the called mobile device, and

providing a second notification to the one or more selected calling mobile devices that indicates the called mobile device is no longer in the use mode of operation.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving, at the mobile device, multiple additional communications initiated by multiple additional calling mobile devices associated with multiple additional calling parties;

assigning a response priority to each calling party of the multiple additional calling parties; and

sending, based on the assigned response priorities, additional notifications that indicate the mobile device is available to receive communications to each calling party of the multiple additional calling parties.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising sending another notification to the selected one or more calling mobile devices after the mobile device is available to receive communications for a certain period of time.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining the mobile device has been available to receive communications for a certain period of time; and

determining a calendar application of the mobile device indicates a user associated with the mobile device is available to receive communications.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the notification is a text message sent from the mobile device to the selected one or more calling mobile devices.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining that the mobile device is currently operating in the use mode includes determining the user associated with the mobile device is on a voice call provided by a phone call application of the mobile device.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining that the mobile device is currently operating in a use mode includes determining the user associated with the mobile device is on a voice call provided by a voice over internet protocol (VOIP) application of the mobile device.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

when the use mode of operation of the mobile device ends, presenting a local notification to the mobile device associated with the user that indicates the calling party initiated the voice call to the mobile device during the busy mode of operation of the mobile device.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining that the calling device has not initiated a subsequent communication to the mobile device; and

resending the second notification to the calling mobile device associated with the calling party that indicates the mobile device is available to receive communications.

10. At least one non-transitory computer-readable medium whose contents, when executed by at least one data processor, perform a process for notifying a calling party of a use mode of operation of a mobile device, the process comprising:

intercepting an indication of a communication initiated between a calling mobile device and a called mobile device;

based on a determination that the called mobile device is currently operating in a use mode of operation, providing a first notification to the calling mobile device that indicates the called mobile device is operating in the use mode of operation,

wherein the use mode of operation of the called mobile device is indicative of the called mobile device being unable to receive the communication initiated by the calling mobile device; and

after the use mode of operation of the mobile device ends;

selecting, based on a priority, one or more calling mobile devices among a plurality of mobile devices that attempted to initiate communication with the called mobile device during the use mode of operation of the called mobile device, and

providing a second notification to the selected calling mobile device that indicates the called mobile device is no longer in the use mode of operation.

11. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 10 , wherein the process further comprises:

during the use mode of operation of the mobile device, sending one or more additional notifications to the selected one or more calling mobile devices that indicates the busy mode of operation of the called mobile device.

12. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 10 , wherein the process further comprises:

receiving, at the mobile device, multiple additional communications initiated by multiple additional calling mobile devices associated with multiple additional calling parties;

assigning a response priority to each calling party of the multiple additional calling parties; and

sending additional notifications that indicate the mobile device is available to receive communication to each calling party of the multiple additional calling parties based on the assigned response priorities.

13. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 10 , wherein the process further comprises

determining that one or more of the selected calling mobile devices has not initiated a subsequent communication to the called mobile device; and

resending the second notification to the one or more selected calling mobile devices that indicates the mobile device is available to receive communications.

14. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 10 , wherein the process further comprises:

determining the called mobile device has been available to receive communications for a certain period of time; and

determining a calendar application of the called mobile device indicates a user associated with the called mobile device is available to receive communications.

15. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 10 , wherein the notification is a text message sent from the called mobile device to the calling mobile device.

The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 10 , wherein determining that the called mobile device is currently operating in a busy mode includes determining the user associated with the called mobile device is on a voice call provided by a phone call application of the called mobile device.

The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 10 , wherein determining that the called mobile device is currently operating in the use mode includes determining the user associated with the called mobile device is on a voice call provided by a voice over internet protocol (VOIP) application of the mobile device.

18. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 10 , wherein the process further comprises:

when the use mode of operation of the called mobile device ends, presenting a local notification to the called mobile device associated with the user that indicates the calling party initiated the communication to the called mobile device during the busy mode of operation of the called mobile device.

19. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 10 , wherein the process further comprises:

determining that the called mobile device has not initiated a subsequent communication to the called mobile device; and

resending the second notification to the calling mobile device that indicates the mobile device is available to receive voice calls.

20. At least one non-transitory computer-readable medium carrying instructions, which when executed by at least one data processor, notifies a calling party, the instructions comprising:

intercepting an indication of a communication initiated between a calling mobile device and a called mobile device;

based on a determination that the called mobile device is currently operating in an occupied mode of operation,

sending a first notification during the occupied mode of operation of the called mobile device to the calling mobile device that indicates the occupied mode of operation of the mobile device; and

after the occupied mode of operation of the mobile device has ended and after a select period of time has occurred from the end of the occupied mode of operation;

selecting, based on a priority, one or more mobile devices among a plurality of mobile devices that attempted to initiate communication with the called mobile device during the occupied mode of operation of the called mobile device, and

sending a second notification to the one or more selected calling mobile device that indicates the called mobile device is available to receive communication.
