Abstract

A radiation delivery system and method of operation are described. The method includes modulating a sub-beam intensity of a radiation beam generated by a radiation source across a plurality of sub-beams that subdivide a fluence field into a two-dimensional (2D) grid, and delivering a plurality of independent two-dimensional (2D) sub-beam intensity patterns from a plurality of angles while the radiation source is moved continuously.

Claims (27)

1. A method of operating a radiation treatment system, comprising:

modulating, by a processing device, a sub-beam intensity of a radiation beam generated by a radiation source across a plurality of sub-beams that subdivide a fluence field into a two dimensional (2D) grid, wherein modulating the sub-beam intensity is based on an open-time profile determined for each sub-beam of the plurality of sub-beams of the 2D grid positioned across an entire direction of travel for each of a plurality of leaf pairs; and

delivering a plurality of independently generated two-dimensional (2D) sub-beam intensity patterns from a plurality of angles while the radiation source is moved continuously based on the open-time profile, wherein a leaf motion profile associated with the open-time profile provides the sub-beam intensity pattern for each of the 2D sub-beam intensity patterns within a single discrete positional section associated with an angle of the plurality of angles for providing the corresponding 2D sub-beam intensity pattern, and wherein the open-time for each sub-beam of each 2D sub-beam intensity pattern is adjusted to provide a total leaf open-time for each of the plurality of leaf pairs that is less than a discrete time interval corresponding to a time for the radiation source to traverse the single discrete positional section associated with the angle of the plurality of angles.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising shaping the radiation beam directed at a target.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising rotating the radiation source continuously, wherein the 2D sub-beam intensity pattern for a particular angle is approximated by delivering the intensity pattern over a small distance.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising constraining a motion of the plurality of leaf pairs used to deliver the 2D sub-beam intensity pattern from a particular angle to occur in less than a pre-selected time period.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising moving a target axially through a center of a gantry via an axial support, wherein the gantry and axial support move simultaneously during irradiation of the target to perform a helical delivery.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein a helical pitch is greater than 0.5.

7. A radiation delivery system, comprising:

a mechanism to move about a target;

a radiation source mounted to the mechanism to generate a radiation beam; and

a processing device operatively coupled with the mechanism and the radiation source, the processing device to control modulation of a sub-beam intensity of the radiation beam across a plurality of sub-beams that subdivide a fluence field into a two-dimensional (2D) grid, wherein the processing device controls modulation of the sub-beam intensity based on an open-time profile for each sub-beam of the plurality of sub-beams of the 2D grid positioned across an entire direction of travel for each of a plurality of leaf pairs, and wherein a plurality of independently generated two-dimensional (2D) sub-beam intensity patterns are delivered from a plurality of angles while the radiation source is moved continuously based on the open-time profile, wherein a leaf motion profile associated with the open-time profile provides the sub-beam intensity pattern for each of the 2D sub-beam intensity patterns within a single discrete positional section associated with an angle of the plurality of angles for providing the corresponding 2D sub-beam intensity pattern, and wherein the open-time for each sub-beam of each 2D sub-beam intensity pattern is adjusted to provide a total leaf open-time that is less than a discrete time interval corresponding to a time for the radiation source to traverse the single discrete positional section associated with the angle of the plurality of angles.

8. The system of claim 7 , further comprising a collimator to shape the radiation beam directed at the target.

9. The system of claim 7 , wherein the mechanism is to rotate continuously and wherein the 2D sub-beam intensity pattern for a particular mechanism angle is approximated by delivering the intensity pattern over a small distance.

10. The system of claim 7 , wherein the system is to constrain a motion of the plurality of leaf pairs used to deliver the 2D sub-beam intensity pattern from a particular mechanism angle to occur in less than a pre-selected time period.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein leaf pair motion for a particular mechanism angle that takes less than the pre-selected time period is centered within the pre-selected time period.

12. The system of claim 10 , wherein each of the plurality of leaf pairs changes direction when delivering the intensity pattern for each subsequent mechanism angle.

13. The system of claim 10 , wherein the system is a robotic-based LINAC radiation treatment system and the mechanism is a robotic arm.

14. The system of claim 10 , wherein the system is gantry-based radiation treatment delivery system and the mechanism is a gantry.

15. The system of claim 7 , wherein the mechanism is a gantry and where the system further comprises an axial support to move the target axially through a center of the gantry, and wherein the gantry and axial support move simultaneously during irradiation of the target to perform a helical delivery.

16. The system of claim 15 , wherein a helical pitch is greater than 0.5.

17. The system of claim 7 , wherein the system is a helical radiation treatment delivery system.

18. A non-transitory computer readable medium comprising instructions that, when executed by a processing device of a radiation treatment delivery system, cause the processing device to:

modulate, by the processing device, a sub-beam intensity of a radiation beam generated by a radiation source across a plurality of sub-beams that subdivide a fluence field into a two dimensional (2D) grid based on an open-time profile determined for each sub-beam of the plurality of sub-beams of the 2D grid positioned across an entire direction of travel for each of a plurality of leaf pairs; and

deliver a plurality of independently generated two-dimensional (2D) sub-beam intensity patterns from a plurality of angles while the radiation source moves continuously based on the open-time profile, wherein a leaf motion profile associated with the open-time profile provides the sub-beam intensity pattern for each of the 2D sub-beam intensity patterns within a single discrete positional section associated with an angle of the plurality of angles for providing the corresponding 2D sub-beam intensity pattern, and wherein an open-time for each sub-beam of each 2D sub-beam intensity pattern is adjusted to provide a total leaf open-time that is less than a discrete time interval corresponding to a time for the radiation source to traverse the single discrete positional section associated with the angle of the plurality of angles.
