Abstract

A dry audio signal may be received. An envelope of the dry audio signal may be compared to a threshold of the playback device to determine a dry excess. A filter may be applied to the dry audio signal to generate a wet audio signal. An envelope of the wet audio signal may be compared to the threshold to determine a wet excess. Based on the dry and wet excess, a dry gain may be determined for the dry audio signal and a wet gain may be determined for the wet audio signal. The wet audio signal and the dry audio signals may be mixed in proportion to respective gains. The mixed audio signal may avoid exceeding an operational limit associated with audio playback on the playback device.

Claims (47)

1. A playback device comprising

at least one processor;

a non-transitory computer-readable medium; and

program instructions stored on the non-transitory computer-readable medium that are executable by the at least one processor such that the playback device is configured to:

receive a first audio signal;

compare a power of the first audio signal to a threshold power to determine a first power difference indicative of an amount by which the power of the first audio signal exceeds the threshold power;

apply a filter to the first audio signal to generate a second audio signal;

compare a power of the second audio signal to the threshold power to determine a second power difference indicative of an amount by which the power of the second audio signal is below the threshold power;

based on the first power difference, determine a first gain associated with the first audio signal;

based on the second power difference, determine a second gain associated with the second audio signal;

based on the first gain and the second gain, mix the first audio signal and the second audio signal to determine a mixed signal; and

cause playback of audio based on the mixed signal.

The playback device of claim 1 , wherein the program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the playback device is configured to apply the filter to the first audio signal to generate the second audio signal comprise program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the playback device is configured to attenuate an amplitude of the first audio signal in a frequency range.

The playback device of claim 1 , wherein the program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the playback device is configured to mix the first audio signal and the second audio signal comprise program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the playback device is configured to mix the first audio signal and the second audio signal at a ratio that causes a power of the mixed signal to be less than or equal to the threshold power.

The playback device of claim 1 , wherein the program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the playback device is configured to compare the power of the first audio signal to the threshold power comprise program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the playback device is configured to compare a maximum power of the first audio signal to the threshold power, and wherein the program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the playback device is configured to compare the power of the second audio signal to the threshold power comprise program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the playback device is configured to compare a maximum power of the second audio signal to the threshold power.

The playback device of claim 1 , wherein the program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the playback device is configured to mix the first audio signal and the second audio signal comprise program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the playback device is configured to mix the first audio signal and the second audio signal at a ratio that causes a maximum power of the mixed signal to be less than or equal to the threshold power.

The playback device of claim 1 , wherein the program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the playback device is configured to compare the power of the first audio signal to the threshold power comprise program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the playback device is configured to compare a current or voltage of the first audio signal to a threshold current or voltage, and wherein the program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the playback device is configured to compare the power of the second audio signal to the threshold power comprise program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the playback device is configured to compare a current or voltage of the second audio signal to the threshold current or voltage.

The playback device of claim 6 , wherein the program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the playback device is configured to compare the current or voltage of the first audio signal to the threshold current or voltage comprise program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the playback device is configured to compare a maximum current or voltage of the first audio signal to the threshold current or voltage, and wherein the program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the playback device is configured to compare the current or voltage of the second audio signal to the threshold current or voltage comprise program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the playback device is configured to compare a maximum current or voltage of the second audio signal to the threshold current or voltage.

The playback device of claim 1 , further comprising program instructions stored on the non-transitory computer-readable medium that are executable by the at least one processor such that the playback device is configured to determine the power of the first audio signal and the power of the second audio signal.

The playback device of claim 1 , wherein the program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the playback device is configured to apply the filter to the first audio signal to generate the second audio signal comprise program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the playback device is configured to apply the filter to a first band of the first audio signal and then apply the filter to a second band of the first audio signal, wherein the first band and second band are non-overlapping frequency bands.

10. A non-transitory computer-readable medium, wherein the non-transitory computer-readable medium is provisioned with program instructions that, when executed by at least one processor, cause a playback device to:

receive a first audio signal;

compare a power of the first audio signal to a threshold power to determine a first power difference indicative of an amount by which the power of the first audio signal exceeds the threshold power;

apply a filter to the first audio signal to generate a second audio signal;

compare a power of the second audio signal to the threshold power to determine a second power difference indicative of an amount by which the power of the second audio signal is below the threshold power;

based on the first power difference, determine a first gain associated with the first audio signal;

based on the second power difference, determine a second gain associated with the second audio signal;

based on the first gain and the second gain, mix the first audio signal and the second audio signal to determine a mixed signal; and

cause playback of audio based on the mixed signal.

The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 10 , wherein the program instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the playback device to mix the first audio signal and the second audio signal comprise program instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the playback device to mix the first audio signal and the second audio signal at a ratio that causes a power of the mixed signal to be less than or equal to the threshold power.

The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 10 , wherein the program instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the playback device to compare the power of the first audio signal to the threshold power comprise program instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the playback device to compare a maximum power of the first audio signal to the threshold power, and wherein the program instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the playback device to compare the power of the second audio signal to the threshold power comprise program instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the playback device to compare a maximum power of the second audio signal to the threshold power.

The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 10 , wherein the program instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the playback device to mix the first audio signal and the second audio signal comprise program instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the playback device to mix the first audio signal and the second audio signal at a ratio that causes a maximum power of the mixed signal to be less than or equal to the threshold power.

The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 10 , wherein the program instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the playback device to compare the power of the first audio signal to the threshold power comprise program instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the playback device to compare a current or voltage of the first audio signal to a threshold current or voltage, and wherein the program instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the playback device to compare the power of the second audio signal to the threshold power comprise program instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the playback device to compare a current or voltage of the second audio signal to the threshold current or voltage.

The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 14 , wherein the program instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the playback device to compare the current or voltage of the first audio signal to the threshold current or voltage comprise program instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the playback device to compare a maximum current or voltage of the first audio signal to the threshold current or voltage, and wherein the program instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the playback device to compare the current or voltage of the second audio signal to the threshold current or voltage comprise program instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the playback device to compare a maximum current or voltage of the second audio signal to the threshold current or voltage.

16. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 10 , wherein the non-transitory computer-readable medium is also provisioned with program instructions that, when executed by at least one processor, cause the playback device to determine the power of the first audio signal and the power of the second audio signal.

17. A method carried out by a playback device, the method comprising:

receiving a first audio signal;

comparing a power of the first audio signal to a threshold power to determine a first power difference indicative of an amount by which the power of the first audio signal exceeds the threshold power;

applying a filter to the first audio signal to generate a second audio signal;

comparing a power of the second audio signal to the threshold power to determine a second power difference indicative of an amount by which the power of the second audio signal is below the threshold power;

based on the first power difference, determining a first gain associated with the first audio signal;

based on the second power difference, determining a second gain associated with the second audio signal;

based on the first gain and the second gain, mixing the first audio signal and the second audio signal to determine a mixed signal; and

causing playback of audio based on the mixed signal.

The method of claim 17 , wherein comparing the power of the first audio signal to the threshold power comprises comparing a maximum power of the first audio signal to the threshold power, and wherein comparing the power of the second audio signal to the threshold power comprises comparing a maximum power of the second audio signal to the threshold power.

19. The method of claim 17 , wherein mixing the first audio signal and the second audio signal comprises mixing the first audio signal and the second audio signal at a ratio that causes a maximum power of the mixed signal to be less than or equal to the threshold power.

20. The method of claim 17 , wherein comparing the power of the first audio signal to the threshold power comprises comparing a current or voltage of the first audio signal to a threshold current or voltage, and wherein comparing the power of the second audio signal to the threshold power comprises comparing a current or voltage of the second audio signal to the threshold current or voltage.
