Abstract

A session management function (SMF) receives, from an access and mobility management function (AMF), a first request to establish a first session for a wireless device. The first request comprises a cellular internet-of-things (IoT) optimization indication for transfer of data of cellular IoT over a control plane. A second request to establish a second session between the SMF and the UPF is sent to a user plane function (UPF). The data for cellular IoT is received from the UPF via the second session. The data is sent to the AMF via the first session.

Claims (65)

1. A method comprising:

receiving, by a session management function (SMF) from an access and mobility management function (AMF), a first request to establish a first session for a wireless device, the first request comprising a cellular internet-of-things (IoT) optimization indication for transfer of data of cellular IoT over a control plane;

sending, to a user plane function (UPF), a second request to establish a second session between the SMF and the UPF;

receiving, from the AMF, the data for cellular IoT via the first session; and

sending, to the UPF, the data via the second session.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first request comprises at least one of:

an identifier of the SMF; and

an address of the SMF.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first request comprises at least one of:

an identifier of the AMF; and

an address of the AMF.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second request comprises at least one of:

an identifier of the SMF; and

an address of the SMF.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second request comprises at least one of:

an identifier of the UPF; and

an address of the UPF.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

selecting, by the SMF, the UPF, based on a capability requirement; and

determining an identifier of the UPF.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving by the SMF from the UPF, a second response indicating an acceptance for configuration of the second session; and

sending by the SMF to the AMF, a first response indicating an acceptance for configuration of the first session.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving, by the SMF from the UPF, a first acknowledgment indicating receipt of the data via the second session; and

sending by the SMF to the AMF, a second acknowledgment indicating receipt of the data via the first session.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising receiving by the AMF from the wireless device, a first non-access stratum (NAS) message indicating a request for data transmission over the control plane.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the first NAS message comprises the data.

11. A method comprising:

receiving, by a session management function (SMF) from an access and mobility management function (AMF), a first request to establish a first session for a wireless device, the first request comprising a cellular internet-of-things (IoT) optimization indication for transfer of data of cellular IoT over a control plane;

sending, to a user plane function (UPF), a second request to establish a second session between the SMF and the UPF;

receiving, from the UPF, the data for cellular IoT via the second session; and

sending, to the AMF, the data via the first session.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the first request comprises at least one of:

an identifier of the SMF; and

an address of the SMF.

13. The method of claim 11 , wherein the first request comprises at least one of:

an identifier of the AMF; and

an address of the AMF.

14. The method of claim 11 , wherein the second request comprises at least one of:

an identifier of the SMF; and

an address of the SMF.

15. The method of claim 11 , wherein the second request comprises at least one of:

an identifier of the UPF; and

an address of the UPF.

16. The method of claim 11 , further comprising:

selecting, by the SMF, the UPF, based on a capability requirement; and

determining an identifier of the UPF.

17. The method of claim 11 , further comprising:

receiving by the SMF from the UPF, a second response indicating an acceptance for configuration of the second session; and

sending by the SMF to the AMF, a first response indicating an acceptance for configuration of the first session.

18. The method of claim 11 , further comprising:

receiving, by the SMF from the UPF, a first acknowledgment indicating receipt of the data via the second session; and

sending by the SMF to the AMF, a second acknowledgment indicating receipt of the data via the first session.

19. The method of claim 11 , further comprising receiving by the AMF from the wireless device, a first non-access stratum (NAS) message indicating a request for data transmission over the control plane.

20. A system comprising:

an access and mobility management function (AMF); and

a session management function (SMF), comprising:

one or more communication interfaces;

one or more processors; and

memory storing instructions that, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to:

receive, from an access and mobility management function (AMF) via the one or more communication interfaces, a first request to establish a first session for a wireless device, the first request comprising a cellular internet-of-things (IoT) optimization indication for transfer of data of cellular IoT over a control plane;

send, to a user plane function (UPF) via the one or more communication interfaces, a second request to establish a second session between the SMF and the UPF;

receive, from the UPF via the one or more communication interfaces, the data for cellular IoT via the second session; and

send, to the AMF via the one or more communication interfaces, the data via the first session.
