Abstract

5G relay nodes attached to millimeter wave carriers (whether standalone or EN-DC) may suffer from poor quality of service due to intermodulation distortion at the donor access node. The relay node is instructed to attach to a lower-frequency carrier, or a different donor access node. The lower-frequency carrier can include another 5G carrier deployed by the same donor access node, or a 4G carrier or any other carrier.

Claims (32)

1. A method for ensuring service quality for a relay node, the method comprising,

measuring an intermodulation distortion level at a donor access node for a first carrier deployed by the donor access node serving the relay node; and

responsive to the intermodulation distortion level measurement at the donor access node being above a threshold, instructing the relay node to attach to a second lower-frequency carrier deployed by the donor access node.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the intermodulation distortion level is associated with one or more of a passive intermodulation (PIM) distortion or a third or higher-order intermodulation distortion.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the third order distortion is associated with a combination of the first carrier and at least one other carrier deployed by the donor access node.

4. The method of claim 3 , further comprising instructing the relay node to detach from the first carrier.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first carrier is configured to utilize millimeter wave (mmW) frequencies.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the first carrier is configured as a default carrier for the relay node.

7. The method of claim 5 , wherein the relay node is located towards a cell edge of the donor access node, the method further comprising:

configuring a lower-frequency carrier as a default carrier for the relay node; and

instructing the relay node to attach to the first carrier if the intermodulation distortion level remains below the threshold.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the donor access node and the relay node are configured to utilize a dual connectivity operating mode using at least the first carrier and at least one other carrier.

9. The method of claim 8 , further comprising instructing the relay node to attach to the second lower-frequency carrier as a primary carrier using the dual connectivity operating mode.

10. The method of claim 8 , further comprising instructing the relay node to attach to the second lower-frequency carrier and disengage the dual connectivity operating mode.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the intermodulation distortion level is measured at the donor access node.

12. A system for serving relay nodes in wireless networks suffering from intermodulation distortion, the system comprising:

a donor access node serving one or more relay nodes; and

a processing node coupled to the donor access node, the processing node configured to perform operations comprising:

determining that an intermodulation distortion level measured at the donor access node is above a threshold; and

responsive to the intermodulation distortion level measured at the donor access node being above the threshold, instructing relay nodes attached to a high-frequency carrier deployed by the donor access node to attach to a lower-frequency carrier deployed by the donor access node.

13. The system of claim 12 , wherein the intermodulation distortion level is associated with the high-frequency carrier.

14. The system of claim 13 , wherein the high-frequency carrier comprises a millimeter-wave (mmW) carrier.

15. The system of claim 14 , wherein the lower-frequency carrier comprises one of a 5G NR carrier or 4G LTE carrier.

16. The system of claim 12 , wherein the donor access node and the relay nodes are configured to utilize a dual connectivity operating mode using at least the high-frequency carrier and at least one other carrier.

17. The system of claim 16 , wherein the operations further comprise instructing the relay nodes to attach to the lower-frequency carrier as a primary carrier using the dual connectivity operating mode.

18. A processing node, the processing node being configured to perform operations comprising:

determining an intermodulation distortion level measured at a donor access;

instructing relay nodes to attach to a millimeter wave (mmW) carrier deployed by a donor access node responsive to the intermodulation distortion level at the donor access node being below a threshold; and

instructing the relay nodes to detach from the mmW carrier responsive to the intermodulation distortion level measurement being above the threshold; and

responsive to the intermodulation distortion level measurement being above a threshold, instructing the relay node to attach to a second lower-frequency carrier deployed by the donor access node.

19. The processing node of claim 18 , wherein the operations further comprise setting the mmW carrier as a default carrier for relay nodes that are within a threshold distance from the donor access node.

20. The processing node of claim 19 , wherein the operations further comprise instructing the relay nodes within the threshold distance from the donor access node to utilize the mmW carrier as a secondary carrier in a dual-connectivity operating mode.
