Abstract

An anchoring apparatus for use in a wellbore, comprises at least one movable wall engaging member for engaging a wall of a wellbore, wherein the at least one movable wall engaging member is movable from a retracted position to an expanded position to engage the wall, and from the expanded position to a retracted position to disengage the wall. Provision of one or more wall engaging members being movable from an expanded position to a retracted position allows the anchoring apparatus to be retrieved from the wellbore, and in particular, from an open hole.

Claims (15)

1. An anchoring apparatus for use in a wellbore, the anchoring apparatus comprising:

a mandrel having a bore for passage of fluid flow and having an outside surface, wherein the mandrel is provided with one or more first openings providing communication of the fluid flow from the bore to the wellbore beyond the outside surface; and

at least one wall engaging member disposed adjacent the outside surface of the mandrel and being configured to engage a wall of the wellbore, wherein the at least one wall engaging member is provided with or comprises one or more second openings therethrough,

wherein the one or more first and second openings are configured to permit the fluid flow to clear debris adjacent the at least one wall engaging member.

2. An anchoring apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the at least one wall engaging member is attached or connected to the mandrel.

3. An anchoring apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the one or more first openings of the mandrel are adjacent to and/or face one or more of the at least one wall engaging member.

4. An anchoring apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the one or more first openings of the mandrel are similar in size or larger than the at least one wall engaging member.

5. An anchoring apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the one or more second openings of the at least one wall engaging member are substantially aligned with the one or more first openings of the mandrel.

6. An anchoring apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the one or more first openings of the mandrel are similar in size or larger than the one or more second openings of the at least one wall engaging member.

7. An anchoring apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the one or more first openings are defined from an inner portion or surface of the mandrel to an outer portion or surface of the mandrel.

8. An anchoring apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the one or more first openings are defined from an inner portion or surface of the mandrel to an outer portion or surface of the mandrel facing an inner side of the at least one wall engaging member.

9. A method for providing an anchoring apparatus in a wellbore, the anchoring apparatus comprising:

a mandrel having a bore for passage of fluid flow and having an outside surface, wherein the mandrel is provided with one or more first openings providing communication of the fluid flow from the bore to the wellbore beyond the outside surface; and

at least one wall engaging member disposed adjacent the outside surface of the mandrel and being configured to engage a wall of the wellbore, wherein the at least one wall engaging member is provided with or comprises one or more second openings therethrough,

wherein the one or more first and second openings are configured to permit the fluid flow to clear debris adjacent the at least one wall engaging member.
