Abstract

Examples described herein involve expanding playback of a media item from a first playback device to a second playback device. In one example, while a first playback device is playing a media item as part of a first zone, the first playback device identifies that a second playback device has moved to a location that is within a given physical proximity of the first playback. The first playback device determines that playback is to be expanded to the second playback device, and transmits a command to cause the second playback device to (i) join the first zone and (ii) begin to play the media item in synchrony with the first playback device.

Claims (56)

1. A system comprising a first playback device, the system comprising:

a communications interface;

at least one proximity sensor;

at least one processor; and

at least one non-transitory computer-readable medium comprising program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is configured to:

while the first playback device is playing particular audio content via at least one first speaker, determine, via the at least one proximity sensor, that the first playback device has moved within a given physical proximity of a second playback device; and

when the second playback device is configured to expand playback, cause, via the communications interface, the second playback device to join a synchrony group comprising the first playback device and begin to play the particular audio content in synchrony with the first playback device via at least one second speaker.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first playback device comprises a battery, and wherein the at least one non-transitory computer-readable medium further comprises program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is configured to:

while the first playback device is drawing current from the battery, cause the first playback device to play back the particular audio content.

The system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one proximity sensor comprises a wireless communications interface, and wherein the program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is configured to determine that the first playback device has moved within the given physical proximity of the second playback device comprise program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is configured to:

receive, via the wireless communications interface over a protocol having a given range, a data transmission indicating that the first playback device has moved within the given physical proximity of the second playback device, wherein the given physical proximity corresponds to the given range.

The system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one proximity sensor comprises a microphone, and wherein the program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is configured to determine that the first playback device has moved within the given physical proximity of the second playback device comprise program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is configured to:

detect, via the microphone, an audio signal indicating that the first playback device has moved within the given physical proximity of the second playback device, wherein the given physical proximity corresponds to audio characteristics of the audio signal.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one non-transitory computer-readable medium further comprises program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is configured to:

determine that the second playback device is configured to configured to expand playback.

The system of claim 5 , wherein the program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is configured to determine that the second playback device is configured to expand playback comprise program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is configured to:

determine that the second playback device is presently idle such that the second playback device is not playing back audio content.

7. The system of claim 5 , wherein the program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is configured to determine that the second playback device is configured to expand playback comprise program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is configured to:

receiving, via the communications interface from a mobile device, at least one message indicating that the second playback device is configured to expand playback, wherein the mobile device is configured to send the at least one message when a particular control is selected on a graphical user interface displayed on the mobile device.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one non-transitory computer-readable medium further comprises program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is configured to:

upon the second playback device joining the synchrony group, cause at least one of the first playback device or the second playback device to adjust their respective volume settings.

9. A system comprising a first playback device, the system comprising:

a communications interface;

at least one proximity sensor;

at least one processor; and

at least one non-transitory computer-readable medium comprising program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is configured to:

while the first playback device is playing particular audio content via at least one first speaker, determine, via the at least one proximity sensor, that a second playback device has moved within a given physical proximity of the first playback device; and

when the second playback device is configured to expand playback, cause, via the communications interface, the second playback device to join a synchrony group comprising the first playback device and begin to play the particular audio content in synchrony with the first playback device via at least one second speaker.

10. The system of claim 9 , wherein the second playback device comprises a battery, and wherein the at least one non-transitory computer-readable medium further comprises program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is configured to:

while the second playback device is drawing current from the battery, cause the second playback device to play back the particular audio content in synchrony with the first playback device.

The system of claim 9 , wherein the at least one proximity sensor comprises a wireless communications interface, and wherein the program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is configured to determine that the second playback device has moved within the given physical proximity of the first playback device comprise program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is configured to:

receive, via the wireless communications interface over a protocol having a given range, a data transmission indicating that the second playback device has moved within the given physical proximity of the first playback device, wherein the given physical proximity corresponds to the given range.

The system of claim 9 , wherein the at least one proximity sensor comprises a microphone, and wherein the program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is configured to determine that the second playback device has moved within the given physical proximity of the first playback device comprise program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is configured to:

detect, via the microphone, an audio signal indicating that the second playback device has moved within the given physical proximity of the first playback device, wherein the given physical proximity corresponds to audio characteristics of the audio signal.

13. The system of claim 9 , wherein the at least one non-transitory computer-readable medium further comprises program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is configured to:

determine that the second playback device is configured to configured to expand playback.

The system of claim 13 , wherein the program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is configured to determine that the second playback device is configured to expand playback comprise program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is configured to:

determine that the second playback device is presently idle such that the second playback device is not playing back audio content.

15. The system of claim 13 , wherein the program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is configured to determine that the second playback device is configured to expand playback comprise program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is configured to:

receiving, via the communications interface from a mobile device, at least one message indicating that the second playback device is configured to expand playback, wherein the mobile device is configured to send the at least one message when a particular control is selected on a graphical user interface displayed on the mobile device.

16. The system of claim 9 , wherein the at least one non-transitory computer-readable medium further comprises program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the system is configured to:

upon the second playback device joining the synchrony group, cause at least one of the first playback device or the second playback device to adjust their respective volume settings.

17. A first playback device comprising:

a communications interface;

an audio amplifier configured to drive at least one first speaker;

at least one processor; and

a battery, wherein the first playback device is configured to draw current for at least the audio amplifier and the at least one processor from the battery when the first playback device is disconnected from an external power source;

at least one non-transitory computer-readable medium comprising program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the first playback device is configured to:

while the first playback device is playing particular audio content via the at least one first speaker, determine, via at least one proximity sensor, that the first playback device has moved within a given physical proximity of a second playback device; and

when the second playback device is configured to expand playback, cause, via the communications interface, the second playback device to join a synchrony group comprising the first playback device and begin to play the particular audio content in synchrony with the first playback device via at least one second speaker.

The first playback device of claim 17 , wherein the at least one proximity sensor comprises a wireless communications interface, and wherein the program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the first playback device is configured to determine that the first playback device has moved within the given physical proximity of the second playback device comprise program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the first playback device is configured to:

receive, via the wireless communications interface over a protocol having a given range, a data transmission indicating that the first playback device has moved within the given physical proximity of the second playback device, wherein the given physical proximity corresponds to the given range.

19. The first playback device of claim 17 , wherein the at least one proximity sensor comprises a microphone, and wherein the program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the first playback device is configured to determine that the first playback device has moved within the given physical proximity of the second playback device comprise program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the first playback device is configured to:

detect, via the microphone, an audio signal indicating that the first playback device has moved within the given physical proximity of the second playback device, wherein the given physical proximity corresponds to audio characteristics of the audio signal.

20. The first playback device of claim 17 , wherein the at least one non-transitory computer-readable medium further comprises program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the first playback device is configured to:

upon the second playback device joining the synchrony group, cause at least one of the first playback device or the second playback device to adjust their respective volume settings.
