Abstract

A system, method, and computer program product are provided for managing a connection between a device and a network. In use, a first device coupled between a second device and a network is identified. Further, the first device is controlled based on predefined criteria utilizing the second device, for managing a connection between the second device and the network.

Claims (46)

1. A method implemented by a first device, the method comprising:

determining the first device is connected between the second device and a network;

receiving at least one instruction via a universal serial bus (USB) connector to disable or enable communications with the network;

disabling a connection between the second device and the network, based on a physical switch of the first device;

determining the second device has not previously been connected to the first device;

enabling traffic sent from the second device to the network and network traffic that is responsive to the traffic sent by the second device;

and

opening at least one outbound port, based on a determination that management software for managing the first device is installed on the second device.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

enabling only the traffic and the network traffic, wherein the opening opens all outbound ports for the second device.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the traffic is for websites or file transfer protocol (FTP) sites.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

disabling communications with the network, based on at least one of the group consisting of: a detection of unwanted data sent from the network to the second device, a detection of unwanted data on the second device, a determination that the second device does not have a security system installed, and a determination that the second device does not include a predetermined update for the security system.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second device is coupled to the first device via a registered jack 45 (RJ-45) port.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

downloading the management software from a website, based on a request for the management software from the second device.

7. A non-transitory, computer-readable medium encoded with instructions that, when executed, cause a processor of a first device to perform operations comprising:

determining the first device is connected between a second device and a network;

receiving at least one instruction via a universal serial bus (USB) connector to disable or enable communications with the network;

disabling a connection between the second device and the network, based on a physical switch of the first device;

determining the second device has not previously been connected to the first device;

enabling traffic sent from the second device to the network and network traffic that is responsive to the traffic sent by the second device;

and

opening at least one outbound port, based on a determination that management software for managing the first device is installed on the second device.

8. The computer-readable medium of claim 7 , the operations further comprising:

enabling only the traffic and the network traffic, wherein the opening opens all outbound ports for the second device.

9. The computer-readable medium of claim 8 , wherein the traffic is for websites or file transfer protocol (FTP) sites.

10. The computer-readable medium of claim 7 , the operations further comprising:

disabling communications with the network, based on at least one of the group consisting of: a detection of unwanted data sent from the network to the second device, a detection of unwanted data on the second device, a determination that the second device does not have a security system installed, and a determination that the second device does not include a predetermined update for the security system.

11. The computer-readable medium of claim 7 , the operations further comprising:

communicating with the second device via a registered jack 45 (RJ-45) port.

12. The computer-readable medium of claim 7 , the operations further comprising:

downloading the management software from a website, based on a request for the management software from the second device.

13. A first device, comprising:

a processor in communication with a memory that stores instructions, the processor configured to execute the instructions

to determine the first device is connected between a second device and a network and

to determine the second device has not previously been connected to the first device;

a universal serial bus (USB) connector that receives at least one instruction to disable or enable communications with the network;

a physical switch that disables a connection between the second device and the network; and

a communication adapter that enables traffic sent from the second device to the network and network traffic that is responsive to the traffic sent by the second device, wherein

at least one outbound port is opened, based on a determination that management software for managing the first device is installed on the second device.

14. The first device of claim 13 , wherein the communication adapter enables only the traffic and the network traffic, and all outbound ports are opened for the second device, based on the determination.

15. The first device of claim 14 , wherein the traffic is for websites or file transfer protocol (FTP) sites.

16. The first device of claim 13 , wherein the communication adapter disables communications with the network, based on at least one of the group consisting of: a detection of unwanted data sent from the network to the second device, a detection of unwanted data on the second device, a determination that the second device does not have a security system installed, and a determination that the second device does not include a predetermined update for the security system.

17. The first device of claim 13 , further comprising:

a registered jack 45 (RJ-45) port to be coupled to the second device.
