Abstract

A system that monitors various conditions of a plurality of hospital beds located in different rooms of a healthcare facility is provided. Alternatively or additionally, other types of equipment may be monitored by the system. Various configurations of network interface units that are coupleable to or integrated into a hospital bed are also disclosed. The system receives data from the hospital beds and/or other equipment and initiates a communication to a wireless communication device of at least one designated caregiver in response to the received data being indicative of an alarm condition.

Claims (22)

1. A hospital bed monitoring system for use in a healthcare facility having a network that includes at least one computer and at least one wireless access point, the hospital bed monitoring system comprising:

a hospital bed having a frame configured to support a patient and bed circuitry carried by the frame and configured to control a plurality of functions of the hospital bed, the bed circuitry being configured to monitor one or more statuses of the plurality of functions; and

an interface unit mounted to a wall in a vicinity of the hospital bed, the bed circuitry being configured to receive a wireless signal from the interface unit, the wireless signal including a unique identification (ID) corresponding to a room location, the bed circuitry storing a bed ID, the bed circuitry being configured to transmit the unique ID and the bed ID to the at least one computer via the at least one wireless access point to permit the at least one computer of the network to determine the room location of the hospital bed based on the unique ID and the bed ID, the bed circuitry further being configured to receive a message from the network via the at least one wireless access point indicating that one or more functions of the plurality of functions are to be monitored by the bed circuitry for respective alert conditions, the bed circuitry being configured to generate an alert if the one or more functions being monitored indicate the respective alert condition.

2. The hospital bed monitoring system of claim 1 , wherein the interface unit is configured to be coupled to a nurse call system via a wired data link.

3. The hospital bed monitoring system of claim 1 , wherein the interface unit is configured to be coupled to the network via a wired data link.

4. The hospital bed monitoring system of claim 1 , wherein the interface unit is configured to be coupled to the network via a wireless data link.

5. The hospital bed monitoring system of claim 1 , wherein the wireless signal received by the bed circuitry from the interface unit comprises an infrared signal.

6. The hospital bed monitoring system of claim 1 , wherein the wireless signal received by the bed circuitry from the interface unit comprises a radio frequency signal.

The hospital bed monitoring system of claim 1 , wherein the message indicates that the one or more functions to be monitored by the bed circuitry pertain to at least one of the following: an angle at which a head section of the hospital bed is raised, braking of casters of the hospital bed, a height at which an upper frame of the hospital bed is raised, a position of a siderail of the hospital bed, a patient position with respect to the hospital bed, and a bed exit by the patient from the hospital bed.

8. The hospital bed monitoring system of claim 1 , further comprising at least one user input that is coupled to the bed circuitry and that is used locally at the hospital bed to enable and suspend monitoring of the one or more functions.

9. The hospital bed monitoring system of claim 1 , wherein the alert generated by the bed circuitry is communicated via the at least one wireless access point to the at least one computer for display.

The hospital bed monitoring, system of claim 9 , wherein the alert generated by the bed circuitry pertains to at least one of the following: an angle at which ahead section of the hospital bed is raised, braking of casters of the hospital bed, a height at which an upper frame of the hospital bed is raised, a position of a siderail of the hospital bed, a patient position with respect to the hospital bed, and a bed exit by the patient front the hospital bed.

11. The hospital bed monitoring system of claim 1 , wherein the alert generated by the bed circuitry is communicated via the interface unit to the at least one computer for display.

The hospital bed monitoring system of claim 11 , wherein the alert generated by the bed circuitry pertains to at least one of the following: an angle at which a head section of the hospital bed is raised, braking of casters of the hospital bed, a height at which an upper frame of the hospital bed is raised, a position of a siderail of the hospital bed, a patient position with respect to the hospital bed, and a bed exit by the patient from the hospital bed.

13. The hospital bed monitoring system of claim 1 , wherein the bed circuitry is configured to transmit bed status data relating to functions of the hospital bed other than the one or more functions being monitored to the at least one computer via the at least one wireless access point.

14. The hospital bed monitoring system of claim 1 , wherein the bed circuitry is configured to transmit bed status data relating to functions of the hospital bed other than the one or more functions being monitored to the at least one computer via the interface unit.

The hospital bed monitoring system of claim 1 , wherein the hospital bed includes a patient position monitor having multiple modes of operation and wherein the bed circuitry is configured to change the patient position monitor from a currently selected mode of operation to another mode of operation in response to a change mode message that is received from the network via the at least one wireless access point.

16. The hospital bed monitoring system of claim 1 , wherein the hospital bed has a device port to which at least one other device is couplable and the bed circuitry is operable to wirelessly transmit device data received from the at least one other device via the device port.

17. The hospital bed monitoring system of claim 1 , wherein the bed circuitry is operable to transmit configuration data to indicate the capabilities included on the hospital bed.

18. The hospital bed monitoring system of claim 1 , wherein the bed circuitry is operable to wirelessly transmit a notify notification message to the at least one computer via the at least one wireless access point that an AC power cord of the bed has been unplugged.

19. The hospital bed monitoring system of claim 18 , wherein the notification message is wirelessly transmitted by the bed circuitry after a delay period has elapsed.

20. The hospital bed monitoring system of claim 1 , wherein the hospital bed includes a mattress supported by the frame and wherein the message indicates that the one or more functions to be monitored by the bed circuitry pertains to one or more mattress functions.
