Abstract

A custom tool for forming a dental restoration in a mouth of a patient includes a facial mold body for a patient-specific, customized fit with the facial side of at least one tooth of the patient, wherein the facial mold body includes a restorative portion and a first engagement portion extending away from the restorative portion; a lingual mold body for a patient-specific, customized fit with the lingual side of the tooth of the patient, wherein the lingual mold body includes a restorative portion and a first engagement portion extending away from the restorative portion; wherein the first engagement portion of the facial mold body interlocks with the first engagement portion of the lingual mold body; and wherein the facial mold body and lingual mold body are configured to combine with the tooth of the patient to form a mold cavity encompassing missing tooth structure of at least one tooth to be restored.

Claims (38)

1 . A custom tool for forming a dental restoration in a mouth of a patient including an occlusal plane, the custom tool comprising:

a facial mold body for a patient-specific, customized fit with a facial side of at least one tooth of the patient, wherein the facial mold body includes a restorative portion and a first engagement portion extending away from the restorative portion of the facial mold body;

a lingual mold body for the patient-specific, customized fit with a lingual side of the at least one tooth of the patient, wherein the lingual mold body includes a restorative portion and a first engagement portion extending in a mesial or distal direction away from the restorative portion of the lingual mold body;

wherein the first engagement portion of the facial mold body interlocks with the first engagement portion of the lingual mold body,

wherein the facial mold body and lingual mold body are configured to combine with the at least one tooth of the patient to form a mold cavity encompassing a missing tooth structure of the at least one tooth, where the first engagement portions form no part of the mold cavity,

wherein the first engagement portion of the facial mold body and the first engagement portion of the lingual mold body extend generally perpendicular to the occlusal plane, wherein either (i) the first engagement portions are configured to be adjacent posterior teeth of the patient, and the restorative portions are configured to mate with anterior teeth of the patient; or (ii) the first engagement portions are configured to be adjacent the anterior teeth of the patient, and the restorative portions are configured to mate with the posterior teeth, and wherein at least the first engagement portion of the facial mold body is not configured to mate with either the anterior teeth or the posterior teeth, and

wherein a clamping force between the facial mold body and the lingual mold body is created based at least in part on an interlocking of the first engagement portions, the clamping force being a result of strain induced in the mold bodies along an arch length of the patient when the custom tool is installed in an oral cavity of the patient.

2 . The custom tool of claim 1 , wherein the facial mold body includes a second engagement portion extending away from the restorative portion, and wherein the lingual mold body includes a second engagement portion extending away from the restorative portion; and

wherein the second engagement portion of the facial mold body interlocks with the second engagement portion of the lingual mold body.

3 . The custom tool of claim 1 , further including a first mesial alignment member on the facial mold body and a second mesial alignment member on the lingual mold body.

The custom tool of claim 1 , wherein the restorative portion of the facial mold body and the restorative portion of the lingual mold body are configured to mate with anterior teeth of the patient, and wherein the first engagement portion of the facial mold body and the first engagement portion of the lingual mold body are configured to be adjacent.

The custom tool of claim 1 , wherein the restorative portion of the facial mold body and the restorative portion of the lingual mold body are configured to mate with the posterior teeth of the patient, and wherein the first engagement portion of the facial mold body and the first engagement portion of the lingual mold body are configured to be adjacent.

The custom tool of claim 1 , wherein the first engagement portion of the facial mold body includes a protrusion and wherein the first engagement portion of the lingual mold body includes an indentation, wherein the protrusion of the facial mold body interlocks with the indentation of the lingual mold body adjacent to an occlusal plane of a patient's mouth.

The custom tool of claim 1 , wherein the first engagement portion of the lingual mold body includes a protrusion and wherein the first engagement portion of the facial mold body includes an indentation, wherein the protrusion of the lingual mold body interlocks with the indentation of the facial mold body adjacent to an occlusal surface of a patient's tooth.

The custom tool of claim 1 , wherein the restorative portion of the facial mold body has a customized fit with facial sides of a plurality of teeth of the patient, and the restorative portion of the lingual mold body has a customized fit with lingual sides of the plurality of teeth of the patient, wherein the at least one tooth comprises the plurality of teeth.

9 . The custom tool of claim 1 , wherein the custom tool is configured to combine with a portion of a dental arch of the patient that includes the at least one tooth located between a molar tooth and an incisor tooth.

10 . The custom tool of claim 1 , wherein the custom tool is configured to combine with a portion of a dental arch of the patient that includes the at least one tooth located between at least two molar teeth.

11 . The custom tool of claim 1 , wherein the custom tool is configured to combine with a portion of a dental arch of the patient that includes the at least one tooth located between at least one molar tooth and a least one premolar tooth.

12 . The custom tool of claim 1 , further including a port, wherein a dental restoration material may be injected into the mold cavity through the port.

13 . A custom tool for forming a dental restoration in a mouth of a patient, the mouth of the patient including an occlusal plane, the custom tool comprising:

a facial mold body for a patient-specific, customized fit with a facial side of at least one tooth of the patient, wherein the facial mold body includes a restorative portion, a first engagement portion extending away from the restorative portion, and a second engagement portion extending away from the restorative portion;

a lingual mold body for the patient-specific, customized fit with a lingual side of the at least one tooth of the patient, wherein the lingual mold body includes a restorative portion, a first engagement portion extending in a mesial or distal direction away from the restorative portion, and a second engagement portion extending in a mesial or distal direction away from the restorative portion;

a first mesial alignment member on the facial mold body and a second mesial alignment member on the lingual mold body;

wherein the first engagement portion of the facial mold body interlocks with the first engagement portion of the lingual mold body, and wherein the second engagement portion of the facial mold body interlocks with the second engagement portion of the lingual mold body;

wherein the first mesial alignment member interlocks with the second mesial alignment member;

wherein the facial mold body and lingual mold body are configured to combine with the at least one tooth of the patient to form a mold cavity encompassing a missing tooth structure of the at least one tooth;

where the first engagement portions form no part of the mold cavity, and

wherein the first and second engagement portions of the facial mold body and the first and second engagement portions of the lingual mold body extend generally perpendicular to the occlusal plane, wherein either (i) the first and second engagement portions are configured to be adjacent posterior teeth of the patient, and the restorative portions are configured to mate with anterior teeth of the patient; or (ii) the first and second engagement portions are configured to be adjacent the anterior teeth of the patient, and the restorative portions are configured to mate with the posterior teeth, and wherein at least the first engagement portion of the facial mold body is not configured to mate with either the anterior teeth or the posterior teeth,

wherein a clamping force between the facial mold body and the lingual mold body is created when the first engagement portion of the facial mold body interlocks with the first engagement portion of the lingual mold body and the second engagement portion of the facial mold body interlocks with the second engagement portion of the lingual mold body, and

wherein the clamping force is created by strain in the facial mold body and an opposing strain in the lingual mold body along an arch length of the patient, the strain resulting from an interlocking of the first engagement portions when the custom tool is installed in an oral cavity of the patient.

14 . A custom tool used for dental treatment, the custom tool comprising:

a facial mold body for a patient-specific, customized fit with a facial side of at least one tooth of the patient, wherein the facial mold body includes a tooth contacting portion and a first engagement portion extending away from the tooth contacting portion;

a lingual mold body for the patient-specific, customized fit with a lingual side of the at least one tooth of the patient, wherein the lingual mold body includes a tooth contacting portion and a first engagement portion extending in a mesial or distal direction away from the tooth contacting portion;

wherein the first engagement portion of the facial mold body interlocks with the first engagement portion of the lingual mold body;

wherein the first engagement portion of the facial mold body and the first engagement portion of the lingual mold body extend generally perpendicular to an occlusal plane, wherein either (i) the first engagement portion of the facial mold body and the first engagement portion of the lingual mold body are configured to be adjacent posterior teeth of the patient, and a restorative portion of the facial mold body and a restorative portion of the lingual mold body are configured to mate with anterior teeth of the patient; or (ii) the first engagement portion of the facial mold body and the first engagement portion of the lingual mold body are configured to be adjacent the anterior teeth of the patient, and the restorative portion of the facial mold body and the restorative portion of the lingual mold body are configured to mate with the posterior teeth, and wherein at least the first engagement portion of the facial mold body is not configured to mate with either the anterior teeth or the posterior teeth,

wherein a clamping force between the facial mold body and the lingual mold body is created based at least in part on the first engagement portion of the facial mold body interlocking with the first engagement portion of the lingual mold body, and

wherein the clamping force is created by strain in the facial mold body and an opposing strain in the lingual mold body along an arch length of the patient, the strain resulting from an interlocking of the first engagement portions when the custom tool is installed in an oral cavity of the patient.

15 . The custom tool of claim 14 , wherein the facial mold body and the lingual mold body are configured to combine with the at least one tooth of the patient to form a mold cavity encompassing a missing tooth structure of at least one tooth to be restored and the first engagement portion of the facial mold body is located at a distance from the mold cavity.
