Abstract

Apparatus and methods are described for analyzing a bodily sample. A microscope system acquires one or more microscope images of the bodily sample. A computer processor identifies elements as being candidates of a given entity, in the one or more images. At least one sample-informative feature, relating to a characteristic of the candidates of the given entity in the sample as a whole, is extracted from the one or more images. A characteristic of the sample is determined at least partially based upon the sample-informative feature, and an output is generated in response thereto. Other applications are also described.

Claims (38)

1. Apparatus for analyzing a bodily sample, the apparatus comprising:

a microscope system configured to acquire one or more microscope images of the bodily sample;

an output device; and

at least one computer processor configured to:

identify elements as being candidates of a given entity, in the one or more images,

extract, from the one or more images, at least one sample-informative feature relating to a characteristic of the candidates of the given entity within the sample as a whole, by extracting, from the one or more images, an indication selected from the group consisting of: an indication of probabilities of the candidates being the given entity, an indication of a number of the candidates that have a probability of being the given entity that exceeds a threshold, and an indication of a number of the candidates that have a probability of being a given type of the given entity that exceeds a threshold;

determine a characteristic of the sample at least partially based upon the sample- informative feature, and

generate an output upon the output device, in response thereto.

2. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the at least one computer processor is configured to extract the sample-informative feature from the one or more images, by extracting, from the one or more images, a number of candidates of the given entity within the sample.

3. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the at least one computer processor is configured to extract the sample-informative feature from the one or more images, by extracting, from the one or more images, a brightness of the candidates relative to a background brightness.

4. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the at least one computer processor is configured to extract the sample-informative feature from the one or more images, by extracting, from the one or more images, an indication of a number of candidates that are determined to be the given entity.

5. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the bodily sample includes a sample that contains blood, and wherein the computer processor is configured to identify elements as being candidates of the given entity by identifying elements as being candidates of the given entity within the blood.

6. The apparatus according to claim 5 , wherein the computer processor is configured to identify elements as being candidates of the given entity by identifying elements as being candidates of an entity selected from the group consisting of: a platelet, a white blood cell, an anomalous white blood cell, a circulating tumor cell, a red blood cell, a reticulocyte, a Howell Jolly body, and a pathogen.

7. The apparatus according to claim 5 , wherein the computer processor is configured to perform a blood count on the sample that contains blood, and the computer processor is configured to generate the output by outputting the blood count.

8. A method for analyzing a bodily sample, the method comprising:

acquiring one or more microscope images of the bodily sample, using a microscope;

using at least one computer processor:

in the one or more images, identifying elements as being candidates of a given entity;

extracting, from the one or more images, at least one sample-informative feature relating to a characteristic of the candidates of the given entity within the sample as a whole by extracting, from the one or more images, an indication selected from the group consisting of: an indication of probabilities of the candidates being the given entity, an indication of a number of the candidates that have a probability of being the given entity that exceeds a threshold, and an indication of a number of the candidates that have a probability of being a given type of the given entity that exceeds a threshold;

determining a characteristic of the sample at least partially based upon the sample- informative feature; and

generating an output upon an output device, in response thereto.

9. The method according to claim 8 , wherein extracting the sample- informative feature from the one or more images comprises extracting, from the one or more images, a number of candidates of the given entity within the sample.

10. The method according to claim 8 , wherein extracting the sample-informative feature from the one or more images comprises extracting, from the one or more images, a brightness of the candidates relative to a background brightness.

11. The method according to claim 8 , wherein extracting the sample- informative feature from the one or more images comprises extracting, from the one or more images, an indication of a number of candidates that are validated as being the given entity.

12. The method according to claim 8 , wherein the bodily sample includes a sample that contains blood, and wherein identifying elements as being candidates of the given entity comprises identifying elements as being candidates of the given entity within the blood.

13. The method according to claim 12 , wherein identifying elements as being candidates of the given entity comprises identifying elements as being candidates of an entity selected from the group consisting of: a platelet, a white blood cell, an anomalous white blood cell, a circulating tumor cell, a red blood cell, a reticulocyte, a Howell Jolly body, and a pathogen.

14. The apparatus according to claim 12 , further comprising performing a blood count on the sample that contains blood, wherein generating the output comprises outputting the blood count.

15. Apparatus for analyzing a bodily sample, the apparatus comprising:

a microscope system configured to acquire one or more microscope images of the bodily sample;

an output device; and

at least one computer processor configured to:

identify elements as being candidates of a given entity, in the one or more images,

extract, from the one or more images, an indication of a number of the candidates that have a probability of being the given entity that exceeds a threshold,

determine a characteristic of the sample at least partially based upon the indication of the number of the candidates that have the probability of being the given entity that exceeds the threshold, and

generate an output upon the output device, in response thereto.

16. The apparatus according to claim 15 , wherein the bodily sample includes a sample that contains blood, and wherein the computer processor is configured to identify elements as being candidates of the given entity by identifying elements as being candidates of the given entity within the blood.

17. The apparatus according to claim 16 , wherein the computer processor is configured to identify elements as being candidates of the given entity by identifying elements as being candidates of an entity selected from the group consisting of: a platelet, a white blood cell, an anomalous white blood cell, a circulating tumor cell, a red blood cell, a reticulocyte, a Howell Jolly body, and a pathogen.

18. The apparatus according to claim 16 , wherein the computer processor is configured to perform a blood count on the sample that contains blood, and the computer processor is configured to generate the output by outputting the blood count.
