Abstract

A multi-material three-dimensional printing apparatus is provided. The provided apparatus includes two or more print stations. Each of the print stations includes a substrate, a transportation device, a dispersion device, a compaction device, a printing device, a fixing device, and a fluidized materials removal device. The apparatus also includes an assembly apparatus in communication with the two or more print stations via the transportation device. The apparatus also includes one or more transfer devices in communication with the assembly apparatus. The apparatus also includes a computing and controlling device configured to control the operations of the two or more print stations, the assembly apparatus and the one or more transfer devices.

Claims (25)

1. A multi-material three-dimensional printing apparatus comprising:

two or more print stations, each of the two or more print stations configured to receive a substrate for forming an individual printed layer on the substrate to generate two or more individual printed layers;

a transfer device associated with the two or more print stations, the transfer device positioned such that at any given time it has access to any one of the two or more individual printed layers, the transfer device configured to transfer the two or more individual printed layers in any desired order;

a build platform in communication with the one or more print stations via the transfer device; and

a computer control system configured to control the operations of the two or more print stations, the build platform and the transfer device, to transfer the two or more individual printed layers from the substrate to the build platform in the desired order.

2. The multi-material three-dimensional printing apparatus of claim 1 , wherein a single transfer device is associated with one or more print stations.

3. The multi-material three-dimensional printing apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the transfer device transfers a printed layer comprising compacted material to a top of a stack of previously positioned layers.

4. The multi-material three-dimensional printing apparatus of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the individual printed layers comprises two or more materials.

5. The multi-material three-dimensional printing apparatus of claim 4 , wherein the two or more materials comprise organic and inorganic materials.

6. The multi-material three-dimensional printing apparatus of claim 4 , wherein each of the two or more materials is printed by an assigned one of the two or more print stations.

7. The multi-material three-dimensional printing apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the transfer device is configured to provide a peeling action in order to facilitate transfer of the two or more individual printed layers.

8. The multi-material three-dimensional printing apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a processing unit to instruct one of the two or more print stations to print a specific material.

9. The multi-material three-dimensional printing apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the substrate received by each print station comprises a discrete platform.

10. The multi-material three-dimensional printing apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising an alignment system configured to enable alignment of printed layers from the two or more print stations relative to previously deposited printed layers on an assembly station.

11. The multi-material three-dimensional printing apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the alignment system comprises one or more fiducials.

12. The multi-material three-dimensional printing apparatus of claim 11 , further comprising an alignment sensor, wherein the one or more fiducials are used in coordination with the alignment sensor and the computer control system to align the one the two or more individual printed layers to a top of a stack of previously positioned layers.

13. The multi-material three-dimensional printing apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the alignment system is configured to sense a position relative to alignment fiducials to within 0.01 mm.

14. The multi-material three-dimensional printing apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the transfer device further comprises one or more alignment sensors, the one or more alignment sensors including an optical sensor, a laser sensor, a magnetic sensor, an ultrasonic sensor or a mechanical sensor.

15. The multi-material three-dimensional printing apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising an adhesion reducing device to facilitate transfer of the one of the two or more individual printed layers.

16. The multi-material three-dimensional printing apparatus of claim 15 , wherein the adhesion reducing device comprises at least one of a thermal, electrical, magnetic or mechanical stimulus.

17. The multi-material three-dimensional printing apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the transfer device provides translational and rotational motion.

18. The multi-material three-dimensional printing apparatus of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the two or more individual printed layers is created prior to being moved to the build platform.

19. The multi-material three-dimensional printing apparatus of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the two or more individual printed layers is created at a location other than the build platform.

20. The multi-material three-dimensional printing apparatus of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the two or more individual printed layers is moved to a transfer station prior to being transferred to the build platform.

21. The multi-material three-dimensional printing apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the transfer device is configured to provide vertical and rotational translation to enable access to a desired one of each of the two or more individual printed layers.
