Abstract

A surgical kit including a hydrogel implant suitable for use in a carpometacarpal joint includes an upper surface, a lower surface, and sidewalls extending between the upper surface and the lower surface, a plunger, and an introducer for depoloying the implant is provided.

Claims (38)

1. A kit comprising:

an introducer comprising:

a distal end comprising a neck portion;

a proximal end opposite the distal end; and

a body extending between the distal end and the proximal end, the body coupled to the neck portion at a shoulder, the body comprising a lumen including a flared shape proximate to the proximal end, wherein the body of the introducer comprises first alignment indicia;

a plunger comprising:

a distal end and a proximal end opposite the distal end, the proximal end comprising a head portion; and

a body extending between the distal end and the proximal end, wherein the body of the plunger comprises a second alignment indicia; and

an implant comprising a hydrogel body,

wherein the plunger comprises:

a distal end comprising a saddle shape including:

a first peak;

a second peak;

a first trough laterally between the first peak and the second peak; and

a second trough laterally between the first peak and the second peak, the first peak laterally between the first trough and the second trough, the second peak laterally between the first trough and the second trough;

and further characterized in that the

hydrogel body of the implant comprises:

an upper surface comprising a saddle shape including:

a first peak;

a second peak;

a first trough laterally between the first peak and the second peak; and

a second trough laterally between the first peak and the second peak, the first peak laterally between the first trough and the second trough, the second peak laterally between the first trough and the second trough;

a planar lower surface opposite the upper surface; and

sidewalls extending between the upper surface and the lower surface; and

wherein a distance between the planar lower surface of the implant and at least one of the first peak of the implant and the second peak of the implant is between 10% and 20% greater than a distance between the planar lower surface of the implant and at least one of the first trough of the implant and the second trough of the implant.

2. The kit of claim 1 , wherein the upper surface of the implant is contoured to correspond to an outer surface of a trapezium.

3. The kit of claim 1 , wherein the body of the implant has a diameter between 4 mm and 8 mm.

4. The kit of claim 1 , wherein the lower surface of the implant is configured to be placed in a cavity in a first metacarpal bone and wherein the upper surface of the implant is configured to abut a trapezium.

5. The kit of claim 1 , wherein the contoured upper surface of the implant is configured to be aligned with at least one of the first alignment indicia and the second alignment indicia.

6. The kit of claim 1 , wherein the first alignment indicia is configured to be aligned with a surface feature of a carpometacarpal bone.

7. The kit of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the first alignment indicia and the second alignment indicia comprises a trough shape.

8. The kit of claim 1 , wherein the first alignment indicia includes a proximal indicia and distal indicia.

9. The kit of claim 1 , wherein the first alignment indicia includes ink, etching, and/or windows.

10. The kit of claim 1 , wherein the first alignment indicia comprises optically transparent material.

11. The kit of claim 1 , wherein the introducer is configured to compress the implant to inhibit or prevent rotation of the implant in the introducer such that alignment of the implant at the proximal end of the introducer can provide alignment of the implant at the distal end of the introducer.

12. The kit of claim 1 , wherein the implant has a non-circular lateral cross-sectional shape and wherein the introducer has a corresponding non-circular lateral cross-sectional shape.

13. The kit of claim 1 , wherein the introducer comprises a viewing window that permits the implant to be viewed as the implant is advanced through the introducer.

14. The kit of claim 1 , wherein the shoulder of the introducer comprises a distally-facing surface that is contoured to correspond to an undrilled surface of a first metacarpal bone.
