Abstract

Disclosed herein are techniques for aligning a collimator assembly with an array of LEDs and apparatuses formed using the disclosed techniques. According to certain embodiments, a display projector includes a display device and a collimator assembly. The display device includes a backplane including a first plurality of features. The display device further includes a plurality of dies. Each die of the plurality of dies comprises a plurality of light emitting diodes and is bonded to the backplane. The collimator assembly includes a plurality of lenses and a second plurality of features. The collimator assembly is attached to the display device through coupling the first plurality of features with the second plurality of features such that the plurality of dies are aligned with the plurality of lenses.

Claims (36)

1. A display projector comprising:

a display device comprising:

a backplane including a first plurality of features, and

a plurality of dies, wherein each die of the plurality of dies comprises a plurality of light emitting diodes, and wherein each die of the plurality of dies is bonded to the backplane; and

a collimator assembly attached to the display device, the collimator assembly comprising:

a plurality of lenses, and

a second plurality of features;

wherein the collimator assembly is attached to the display device through coupling the first plurality of features with the second plurality of features such that the plurality of dies are aligned with the plurality of lenses, and wherein:

the second plurality of features are recesses in the collimator assembly, or

the first plurality of features are openings in the backplane.

2. The display projector of claim 1 , wherein the first plurality of features are balls comprising a fusible material, and wherein the second plurality of features are recesses in the collimator assembly.

3. The display projector of claim 2 , wherein each of the balls has a spherical shape.

4. The display projector of claim 2 , wherein each of the balls has an oblong shape.

5. The display projector of claim 2 , wherein the recesses have cross-sections that match the balls.

6. The display projector of claim 1 , wherein the first plurality of features are openings in the backplane, wherein the second plurality of features are protrusions from the collimator assembly, and wherein the protrusions are inserted into the openings.

7. The display projector of claim 6 , wherein the openings extend through a redistribution layer of the backplane.

8. The display projector of claim 6 , wherein the backplane further includes a metal sidewall around each of the openings.

9. The display projector of claim 1 , wherein the backplane further includes a first plurality of contact pads, and wherein the plurality of dies are bonded to the first plurality of contact pads.

10. The display projector of claim 9 , wherein the backplane further includes a second plurality of contact pads, and wherein the first plurality of features are located on the second plurality of contact pads.

11. The display projector of claim 1 , wherein:

the first plurality of features are openings in the backplane and shaped to receive the second plurality of features, or

the second plurality of features are recesses in the collimator assembly and shaped to receive the first plurality of features.

12. The display projector of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of lenses is a collimating lens.

13. A display assembly comprising:

a backplane including a first plurality of features;

a plurality of dies, wherein each die of the plurality of dies comprises a plurality of light emitting diodes, and wherein each die of the plurality of dies is bonded to the backplane; and

a collimator assembly comprising a plurality of lenses and a second plurality of features, wherein the first plurality of features are coupled with the second plurality of features such that the plurality of dies are aligned with the plurality of lenses, and wherein:

the second plurality of features are recesses in the collimator assembly, or

the first plurality of features are openings in the backplane.

14. The display assembly of claim 13 , wherein the first plurality of features are balls comprising a fusible material, and wherein the second plurality of features are recesses in the collimator assembly.

15. The display assembly of claim 14 , wherein the recesses have cross-sections that match the balls.

16. The display assembly of claim 14 , wherein the balls are bonded to contact pads on the backplane.

17. The display assembly of claim 14 , wherein the balls have a diameter between approximately 0.1 millimeter and approximately 1 millimeter.

18. The display assembly of claim 13 , wherein the first plurality of features are openings in the backplane, wherein the second plurality of features are protrusions from the collimator assembly, and wherein the protrusions are inserted into the openings.

19. The display assembly of claim 18 , wherein the openings extend through a redistribution layer of the backplane.

20. The display assembly of claim 18 , wherein the backplane further includes a metal sidewall around each of the openings.
